Any fears that 2009's vintage may be difficult to sustain are immediately dispelled with a fantastic show which works brilliantly as an hour's mix of music - while showcasing the quality of productions on offer from the likes of Steve Bug, Nick Muir, Guy Gerber, Robert Babicz, Nick Fanciulli + much much more - there's surely something for everyone with the Premiére Cru of T281.
So the first studio mix of John's 2010 crop gets underway via "Like It Should Be", part of Steve Bug's 5 track EP "Collaboratory Remixes Volume 1". Here Steve Bug's Tech House meets the sultry and haunting vocals of Helsinki's Gigi to deliver a tune of beautiful simplicity that evokes memories of PMT's classic "Deeper Water". Next up is John's longstanding studio associate Nick Muir, who has been busy in the sudio of late with JD (“Tangent” and “Aquatonic” alongside remixes for Timo Maas, Christian Smith & John Selway and most recently Abe Duque's "Hypocricy"). Somehow Nick still finds the time to put out his own work (“G Platz” and “Tenko”) for Dave Seman's Audio Theraphy. The acclaimed Wiretappeur (aka Florian Kruse, Nils Nurnberg and Stel) continue their rich vein of form with a beautiful deep house monster remix full of luscious chords and deep grooves.
Having played at the likes of Fabric (London), Rex Club (Paris) Cocorico (Italy) and Tresor (Berlin) France's Okain is a name to watch out for. Frankfurt's Daniel Mehlhart is hot property too, with his "Acrobat" rework showcasing perfectly just why - deep, warm and moody, with huge helpings of classic Detroit touches, the original's melodic strings are accompanied by weighty synth stabs, to stunning effect.
After releases for seminal labels Bedrock and Cocoon, Israeli Guy "Stoppage Time "Gerber is certainly a major talent with an ear for a warm evokative melody that can be subtle or (as it is here) more upfont. Taken from the "My Invisible Romance EP" on Guy's rather cool Supplemental Facts imprint "The Hollywood In You" follows his label's ethos of "music for the heart and feet, art for the mind and soul". The EP has been described as an intimate glance into the production world of Guy Gerber', and if anything, this recent work proves there's more to Gerber's armoury than melodic techno and progressive style beats. Released on Gerber's own Supplement Facts imprint, it's an EP with a personal, experimental touch, showcasing Gerber's admiration for more down trodden sounds. If you like what you hear I'd urge you to check out the title track and rest of the EP.
(Diggers in the thick of the action recently at Ruby Skye)
John cranks things up after the break with a remix that has taken two years to see daylight. Goodness knows why Patrice Bäumel's Remix has been locked away for so long - freed from its shackles and onto the dancefloor "Klaus" is an infectious bit of tech house that leads very nicely into a massive massive track from one of the most en vogue and talented producers out there, Robert Babicz.
"The Sun" is a maiden outing from Robert's new Babiczstyle label, and will no doubt have DJ's across the globe falling over each other to be first to throw it in their CDJ2000's. This looks set to be a surefire hit on the dancefloors and comes complete with multiple layers, beautiful syths, groovy beats, an infectious melody and cool breakdown that will send a shiver down you when played out live as the club darkens, the smoke machines churn out a haze, and the lights come on as The Sun's melodic theme envelopes you with warmth. If this is anything to go by Robert's new artist album promises to be a true gem.
Spirit Catcher's "Sedona" is another tune that demands to be played out live. Belgian's Jean Vanesse & Tom Sohet have been making futuristic house music together for 7+ years on high profile labels like 2020Vision, Rebirth, and now Marc Romboy's Systematic. The title track of the Sedona EP is a slow burner focusing on a good groove and percussion to set the mood, with some deep, pulsing organ stabs giving the track a serious late night ambience.
We round off the show with two newies on Joris Voorn's chillingly cool "Rejected". After Joris's 'Sweep The Floor' and 'Chase The Mouse' on Rejected's 'Dusty House' series Nic Fanciulli takes over their third release with some powerfully charged house as he feeds the freezer and works the week. Don't be fooled by the quirky/silly titles ... there is some serious music going on here.
Nic is a reknowned DJ of major repute, and has freely given up his time and talent for John's "Bedrock Benefit" night at the intimate new Cable venue (London) on February 4th. This promises to be one of the highlights of the year, with all proceeds and donations generously going to a worthwile cause (Macmillan Cancer Support) - please follow the link below for more details.

This weeks guest mix is care of Berlin's DJ/Producer Lützenkirchen, who cobbled together a stellar remix of John Digweed's "Warung Beach" that also featured on John's first Transitions CD for Renaissance, and has since gone on to be a prolific producer of reknowned quality. The mix is a live one made of up entirely of Lützenkirchen's productions from his Ghost Me EP (Tracks 1, 4 & 8 ) Munich Clubbing Supreme EP (Tracks 2 & 7) "Platform B - 09.#11" (Tracks 3 & 6) and Linear Sky EP (Tracks 5, 9, 10 & 11), so you get a full flavour of why his tracks are so sought after.
And there we have to come to an end. Like a fine Pétrus T281 develops and benefits from being allowed to mature and breath over time - repeat listens will reap their rewards as there is much to savour and, luckily for us, many more shows to listen to in 2010.
As always, both sets are available now in the [ms] downloads section

Tobias Lützenkirchen The Story so far – September 2009
Men of the moment and flavours of the month come and go, as the phrases suggest. It’s relatively easy to get a short-term buzz in dance music – but in these days of limitless downloads and increasing disposability, few hotshots have got it what it takes to go the distance. Lützenkirchen is one name that refuse to go away.
Munich’s foremost electro-techno exponent has moved effortlessly between underground and overground success in recent years – scoring a German Top 10 chart hit with the huge 3 Tage Wach while putting out a prolific, consistent stream of cool and credible club tracks, all a decade after he first began producing. From his huge remixes for the likes of John Digweed and Coburn to his outstanding 2008 artist album Pandora Electronica, the power and quality of his productions rarely slip. Meanwhile his acclaimed live sets continue to grow in reputation, his charismatic stage presence bringing a breath of fresh air to the usual limp and lifeless laptop workout.
Tobias Lützenkirchen’s roots in the music game go way back to 1992, when he first appeared on record as singer. After immersing himself in his love dance music by working as a promoter in Ibiza in 1995, he worked as a professional background vocalist and songwriter on some major projects from 1996 to 1999, before succumbing to the house and techno bug that had been slowly consuming him.
Some 20+ aliases, artist names and collaborative groups later, Lützenkirchen was born in 2005 – the name with which he would finally become a global star. Blending infectious, jacking techno grooves with dirty electro sounds and dashes of house, his sounds is electronic as they come, but with a real sense of funk that makes his music accessible to a wide range of DJs, clubbers and part-time dance music enthusiasts. He doesn’t follow the musical crowd – but that’s not to say that he doesn’t know how to keep the music fresh. Continually striving to innovative and evolve his sound, you can always count on him to push things forward – rather than copying the latest hotshot or ripping off endless old records. He only began his DJ career in 2006, when the success of his productions began to bring booking requests from around the world, and by 2008 he had switched to performing pure live sets. But whether he’s playing to 300 people in a sweaty provincial German nightclub, or to 35,000 at a huge festival, his enthusiasm and passion are the same. The last two years have seen him play in every continent at least twice, with 8 tours of Brazil in the past 3 years alone.
Despite this heavy travel schedule, he remains one of the most prolific producers around – with a level of quality that few can match. He’s not about hype, trends, fads or jumping on bandwagons – Lützenkirchen lets his music speak for itself. And 10 years on, it’s still telling quite a story …
Check out Lützenkirchen's Myspace for some other mixes for download. The next Lutzenkirchen EP "Body Nation" on Great Stuff should be available around the beginning of February.
"This time the Tracks will be way more housier than usual. I mean House, not Tech-House... You will see/hear what I mean, when the EP has been released." Lützenkirchen
