Deliver downloads straight to your Desktop with RSSOwl!

Are you tired of constantly searching the Promos and Recommendations forum for new sets? Use RSS to view only new threads as they're posted and none of the bullshit bumps that come with it! Read more to find out how.


Estimated time to completion: 5 minutes

1. Download RSSOwl by clicking the URL below:
   
   
   
   
2. Run the rssowl_1_2_3_win32.exe executable.
   
   
3. Select your language.
   
   
4. Click the Next button at the RSSOwl Setup window.
   
   
   
   
   
   
5. Click the I Agree button at the License Agreement window.
   
   
   
   
   
   
6. Click the Next button at the Install Location window.
   
   
   
   
   
   
7. Click the Install button at the Start Menu Folder window.
   
   
   
   
   
   
8. Once the install is complete, uncheck Show Tutorial and press the Finish button.
   
   
   
   
   
   
9. RSSOwl will open. Subscribe to a new feed by selecting File -> New -> Favorite.
   
   
   
   
   
   
10. Enter the following information on the Add Favorite window:
    
    URL/Path: [Right-click, copy shortcut for full URL in clipboard]
    Title: MercuryServer
    Update: Every 30 minutes
    On Startup: CHECKED
    Open on Startup: CHECKED
    
    Press the Change button once finished with entering the above information.
    
    
    
    
    
    
11. Highlight Favorites and press the Add Category button.
    
    
    
    
    
    
12. Type Downloads in the Title prompt and press the OK button.
    
    
    
    
    
    
13. Verify that the newly-created Downloads category is highlighted in the Category Selection window and press the OK button.
    
    
    
    
    
    
14. Press the OK button at the Add Favorite window.
    
    
    
    
    
    
15. Press the Green Start Arrow in the main RSSOwl window.
    
    
    
    
    
    
16. Double-click MercuryServer in the Favorites pane on the left.
    
    All new threads in Promos and Recommendations will automatically be downloaded every 30 minutes and placed into this folder for your review. Any replies to all existing threads will be ignored, which effectively filters all of the spam replies in the forum. You'll only see new downloads once they're posted.
    
    
    
    
    
    
17. Click on a topic's MercuryServer URL to download the set.

I've been using this but I think you should mention that after the install you might want to change the browser preference, otherwise if you click the link it will open in RSSOwl. If you want it to open in your default browser then just go into RSSOwl and go to Tools then Preferences if the General tab isn't expanded then click the plus sign to expand it and go to Browser . On the right side you'll need to browse to the browser of your choice (IE or Firefox) after that make sure the check mark for "Use External Browser" is checked then apply and save your changes!

This might go outside of your tutorial but it I think it should be mentioned. This is a great tutorial on it's own though and I used it to set mine up with. Thanks for taking the time to come up with this!

I use my email client (Thunderbird) for RSS so I didn't know the nuances like that. good to know. can you type up step-by-step instructions for this and I'll append it to the end of the tutorial?

How to set RSSOwl to use the default browser

Once RSSOwl is setup and your feeds have been populated you will notice that by clicking on a link that link will open up within RSSOwl. For some people this is alright, but I noticed a problem (according to me), I had to log back in. I do not use a shared computer so I have no need to log out of [MS], and as such I don?t want to have to log into it within RSSOwl. For this part of the tutorial I will show how this is accomplished.

1.Open up RSSOwl and go to Tools at the top bar and select Preferences.







2.Clicking on the Preferences will present you with the Preferences box allowing you to make changes to RSSOwl (for this tutorial we are only concerned with the Browser portion). Click on Browser and here you can specify which browser you would like to use.





3. On the right side click the Search button and browse to where your default browser is. I use Firefox so I will put the path to Firefox in this box. If you use Internet Explorer just browse to where IE is (C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe).





4. Navigate down to the Misc box and place a check mark next to Use external Browser. Then select Apply and then click OK. You should now be able to open up any link within those feeds with your default browser.
