i wanna know why we cant set up huge solar arrays across the oceans. lord knows there is so much space to utilize there. and think about the northern regions of canada, russia greenland and the artics.. there is a proven source of power and plenty of room to make it. also, i believe in nuclear power, but we could also use the remote regions of the world to hold it.

either way we need oil and coal right now and nothing is gonna change that.

Solar and Wind power is useless for anything but a nice supplement to a core technology that sustains business and city consumption without fail. Besides the cost of solar energy is prohibitive.

In regards to nuclear the main reason is cost. The time it takes to break even is something over 25 years of operation and then you have extremely high maintence costs. The other factor, as you have pointed out with your post, is fear. There are newer technologies (ie. pebble reactors) which make it far safer than its ever been. But again people fear anything nuclear (or was it "nucular" ). They fail to see the cancer rates around coal burning plants far exceeds the rates you'll see around nuclear plants. They just always think Chernobyl.

I guess we just have to wait until fusion becomes more realistic for energy generation purposes.

cancer rates are acceptable because they can pay people off over time as opposed to getting bombarded by lawsuits at one time in the instance that their is another 3 mile island disaster.

Solar power needs batteries. Where the hell are we going to keep all the Li batteries needed even to support a small country like say Trinidad? Soonyou have all the environmentalist bitching about Li everywhere. Nukes would be great, but even if we put them in the most remote area imaginable the fallout from an accident would cover then entire world in a matter of minutes since the radioactive cloud could easily reach the stratosphere (i.e. Chernobyl). Another option would be to go deep underground with the reactors. But again the tree huggers would have a shit fit! Hydrogen is the future and beyond that are chemical fuel cells like Methanol fuel cells which will take alcohol and convert it to water and CO2. As for the Kyoto agreement, it doesn't matter who ratifies it or not, Global Warming is a big lie thought up by desperate, attention seeking environmentalists. The worlds climate cycles and we are still coming out of the last ice age.

Hydrogen production takes more energy then it can output. The only way go about is use renewable energy to produce the hydrogen, but then your yield is even less (since you could have just used the energy without producing hydrogen).

In regards to Chernobyl- The day it had the melt down, the operators were performing some kind of test. The test by itself wouldn't have caused the meltdown but all the safety measures were also shut down. In a normal operating conditon it would NEVER have happened. It was caused by the many safeguards being turned off AND the reactor being pushed to its limits.

Though there is no absolute proof that global warming is entirely man-made, it's quite a coincidence that the recent increases in CO2 in the atmosphere happened at the same time as the Industrial Revolution. If man is not the sole cause of global warming, we still don't want to add to the problem by burning more non-renewable fuels. And those environmentalists aren't all hippies- they're respected scientists citing research.

Solar and nuclear power could be further developed, but Big Oil won't let it happen. We're taking baby steps when we need to be running miles.

Re: TODAY BEGINS THE KYOTO PROTOCOL!!!!

Actually, Kyoto only looks like it will offset the warming trend by six years; obviously not the benefit we were looking for. At this rate I see no way for anyone to reverse warming; gas is too cheap and easy- it's liquid money.

...if it is even caused by us, which is yet to be determined.

Eventually countries like the U.S., Japan, and European countries will begin to make large scale adaptations to renewable energy, but it's not going to happen any time soon, and certainly if man is the biggest contributor to the CO2 levels (and hence, greenhouse effect), we are going to see significant warming.

So get your sunblock! ...and your umbrella, too: global warming causes increased precipitation.

They adapt....when there is a need for it, no sooner. That need will not be the environment I think, rather a shortage on fossile resources like oil, cole, gas...

"Global Warming" is the biggest political buzz word of the 20th century.

                            I'm not buying it.

in regards to alternative power sources:

in college there was a model that generated power from ocean waves. Im sure i can google the info and find the model and info, i'll look into it.

                            Seemed like a fantastic idea.
