I can either create one forum for each genre of music, create a forum for "bots", or create a forum for only the [ms] top 250 artists. Any of these is going to require a lot of manual effort in moderating the place to keep the posts in the right place. We already had a subforum for bots but people were bitching that they had to go to two places to grab sets. I can create a subforum again if the mods are willing to help move anything that slips by and if reverting back to that setup is what everybody wants.

How would a subforum for bots work? Threads started by bots will still have to be manually moved to the sub forums?

From what I can tell, 3 issues facing P&R:

1) A flood of new threads by bots
2) Threads about DJs we don't necessarily care about
3) Shitty links

I don't believe 1) is a problem if the threads are relevant and the links are good (I can't imagine us complaining about a sudden flood of real Digweed or Cattaneo sets), so the real problem is 2) and 3) ?

(Plus if the threads are relevant, it wouldn't be a flood)

I don't know if we can solve 3) unless someone actually downloads and checks those links. But to solve the problem as it is at the moment, why not simply ban the bots or users who're posting those links?

Get rid of the existing problem, and in future if we see new users who post similar links (multiple filesharing sites, posts look like bots), someone will have to vet those links and users. Also in future, if any of us download from these offending links, we can come back and report the post so a mod will intervene.

Solving 2) is a bit more problematic. I don't think a subforum is the solution for this, or anything around the site.

I can see 3 ways around it:

Ratings: All of us use the rating system properly so everyone who has downloaded and checked out a set will help rate it, and we can create some kinda search or sort to display threads by rating. The onus is on us, the users, to take the time to rate the sets. The upside to this is, in future if someone asks to recommend a Cattaneo or some DJ set, it's easy to see the recommended ones.

Recommendations: Each set/thread has a button for Recommend or Favourite, so I can look at a thread, and see the individual users who've recommended the set. This is different from Ratings because it's a bit more granular: If I see a thread has been recommended by another user I trust or I know have similar taste, then it's good to go.

DJ Database: Someone already suggested that we create a system whereby threads about the most subscribed DJs are shunted into a subforum. I don't believe subform is the way to go. But if we can create such a system, and simply tag the threads as 'MS Favourites' so that they stand out from the chaff, it should help a bit. The pro of this is that the system becomes more automatic, as long as people are subscribing to their favourite DJs in the database, P&R should sort itself out. The con of it is that naturally some up and coming or unknown DJ might get lost in the chaff because the database subscription only works with a lot of numbers.



I'm thinking maybe a combination of DJ Database and Recommendations can solve this.
