    QUESTION...

I'm a bit drunk right now, and was reading the thread about Tiesto @ Disney Land, the Olympics, etc. Much of Tiesto's crossover success has been accredited to his management and pr teams. I'm just wondering if people think that progressive/acid/tech house could really break through (closer) to the mainstream with the proper forces behind it, or if there is something else about Tiesto and his sound that puts him at the forefront. Thoughts?

quite a good question for your state of mind... :ROFLMAO:

I think for something (genere of music for example) to become successful in comercial terms there has to be a wide enough audience. You don't start advertising something if you're not sure there is enough customers in the target group of your product to cover your marketing costs. With music, it sometimes so that the media tries to create taste for music that is not yet there. Also, if you want anything to reach large number of people it has to be simple enough.

So answer to your question is yes and no Yes, because prog is something you could easily create taste for (judging by the fact that it was possible to do so for Marylin Manson music... ) but it would certainly have to change a bit in course of this process - and therefore no, because I'm not sure if you could still call it prog.

On a side note, I think Sasha's pr team is as far as you can get with this type of music. I don't think any other dj form this particular playground has such good marketing. All this talking about ableton LONG BEFORE he actually started using it created such a hype! The fundacion series was also well advertised (in advance too). And just look at the Orlando benefit gig flyers - nothing better for a celebrity than to have a charity show at the right moment. Somebody there is doing their homework.

well, i think its about the electronic music, djs who mix trance get more crowds than djs who do progressive
i guess its something about the bitrate of the sets mixed with extasy that gets to the people
its not just tiesto vs digweed, check pvd, or avb, they all get big shows all the time, i dont thing its about mostly about promotions, carl cox, steve lawler, big names who dont need further promotions and they dont do as well as these trance djs
basicly, trance is the music for the mases

Some time ago I read an (scientific!) article about music complexity. It was some measure designed by profesional musicians to judge the difficulty (in lack of a better word) of a piece of music. The most charging factors were key changes and rythm/beat/whatever changes. The more intricate the tempo and so on, the more complex a piece is. The highest scores were from classical music of course and the lowest for some brazilian dance songs The conclusions from the article were that the complexity can be quite easily translated to popularity - the less complex music appeals to larger audience, while the more complex pieces are savoured by connoiseurs.

If you used this measure to rank edm genres, trance would probably prove to be teh simplest kind, while prog would land somewhere at the other end. This could explain the differences in popularity. And it also means in order to get prog to the masses it would need to be simplified = it would not be the same prog anymore.

Let's face it. We're the elite of the edm listeners. And let's leave it this way.

                  Trance appeals to girls.
                  Girls appeal to boys.
                  Boys will chase girls
Hence trance will be more popular!!

he is popular for the same reason pop music is popular. zero integrity but will play what the less "into-it" fan wants to hear. he plays to the casual fan of dance music and will probaly be playing garage if it ever becomes the new trance. he is a cunt.
