Coming of age in Manchester's black music scene, Greg Wilson has always been an outsider.
First sitting behind the decks as a teenager, the DJ became an early champion of jazz-funk when the Northern Soul scene still held sway. Earning massive acclaim with his eclectic sets, Greg Wilson continually strove for a new challenge.
Dropping in a few disco cuts, the DJ was perfectly placed to absorb the impact of hip hop. Introducing elements of electro into his set, Greg Wilson became a star at Manchester club Legend while his shows on the city's Piccadilly radio station were years ahead of their time in terms of music, structure and technique.
The first person to DJ on British television, Greg Wilson was also the first British person to release a re-edit. Peppering his set with these hand-crafted re-workings the DJ took care of every element to push his music forward.
That was then. This is now. Remarkably, though, very little has changed. Famously retiring in 1984, Greg Wilson emerged from his cocoon in 2003 to find that his electro-funk sets had an enduring dancefloor rigour.
Becoming an in-demand DJ all over again, The Vintage Festival has hooked Greg Wilson to supply a deft set at this summer's event. Taking place in the Southbank Centre, the Manchester DJ will play some of his pivotal re-edits alongside some of his favourite modern cuts.
A real party DJ, Greg Wilson was asked to close last year's instalment of the festival. ClashMusic has managed to smuggle out his set, which contains some all time classics alongside a few rarities.
