    What a great idea...

Wolfowitz on shortlist for World Bank top post
By Andrew Balls and Edward Alden in Washington
    Published: March 1 2005 00:43 | Last updated: March 1 2005 00:43

Paul Wolfowitz, US deputy secretary of defence, has emerged as a leading candidate to replace James Wolfensohn as the president of the World Bank.

Mr Wolfowitz is one of a small number of people being considered for the US nomination, administration insiders said.

The nomination of Mr Wolfowitz, one of the chief architects of the Iraq war and a former US ambassador to Indonesia, would likely be highly controversial, and could raise new questions about the process by which the World Bank chief is selected. One administration official said his nomination ?would have enormous repercussions within the development community?.

Others on the US shortlist include Randall Tobias, former head of Eli Lilly and the administration's co-ordinator on Aids.

Leadership of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund is decided by all the shareholders in the institutions. But the US and Europe in effect divide up the top jobs, with an American heading the bank and a European running the fund.

The effort to pick the US candidate has been led by the White House National Security Council and the Council of Economic Advisers. The Treasury is leading consultations with other World Bank shareholders. Asked about Mr Wolfowitz's possible nomination, Rob Nichols, Treasury spokesman, said: ?We don't speculate on personnel appointments before they are made.?

Other names on the US list are John Taylor, the top Treasury official for international affairs, and Peter McPherson, president of Michigan State University. But they are not seen by the administration as leading candidates.

European officials point to the dispute over Caio Koch-Weser a candidate for the IMF post favoured by Europe but blocked by the US as setting a precedent that could see them veto the US nominee. Developing countries have also demanded a greater say in the selection.

wb pres is american (de facto). didnt you read?

this is what happens in corporate america. people in intel or the military retire to the private sector, and tap their gov't networks and resources to bring profit to their companies.

then you've got cheney and halliburton. rumsfeld cleaned up the company that made nutrasweet i think before working in nixon's administration.

the ties between the government and corporations (healthcare/pharmaceutical, defense, automobile, etc.) are apalling. and we criticize third world countries for not being democratic...

Successful people have a tendency to be successful in all walks of life. Keep
complaining...... it makes their success easier to comeby.
And whatever you do, don't try too hard to outwork these people......it
          will only ruin your life.

These people have the power to get things done.....that is why they
are sought after. This country needs a more can-do spirit........and
              thus we need fewer bitches.

If you think they are corrupt individuals then work hard so you can replace
              their corruption with nobility.

                    Hmm...

Bono's next No 1 may be at World Bank

                    Julian Borger in Washington
                    Monday March 7, 2005
                    The Guardian

He is world famous, and there is no doubt he cares passionately about development. Bono, the Irish rock singer, has many qualifications to be the next president of the World Bank -overseeing global development efforts, a job that becomes vacant in June when James Wolfensohn resigns.

The Bush administration is not ruling Bono out. In fact, the US treasury secretary, John Snow, went out of his way to say nice things about him in a discussion about the forthcoming vacancy yesterday. "He's somebody I admire. He does a lot of good in this world of economic development," Associated Press quoted him saying. Asked about the shortlist for the post, he replied: "I am not going to review here all the candidates that are on the list."

It sounded like a maybe, at least. By tradition, it is up to the US to appoint the World Bank president.

Other names mentioned include Carly Fiorina, a businesswoman who was recently sacked as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard, the office and consumer electronics company. Bono can claim experience working with the Bush administration. He went on an "odd-couple" tour of Africa in 2002 with Mr Snow's predecessor at the treasury department, Paul O'Neill, and seemed to have gone some way to convincing him of the need for more development aid.

Would be good if Bono was president, but it would only be a publicity thing-surely you have to have some kind of knowledge of accounting, economics etc to be WB president?

Bono would be a great choice I think.

But as someone said I think you'd wanna have some degree or background in accounting and economics before taking on such a job!
