Following on from the recent return of Mathew Jonson to Minus, ‘Knibbie Never Comes Alone’ sees old associate Loco Dice release on the label for the first time since 2006. In the meantime, the Tunisian-born, Dusseldorf-based producer has found a home for his often dubby, sometime tribalistic records on imprints like Cadenza, Cocoon and Ovum as well, of course, as his own esteemed outpost, Desolat.
Having found time to get back in the studio with long-time studio collaborator Martin Buttrich despite continuing to curate dancefloor soundtracks around the world each and every weekend, Dice explores an abstract and cerebral techno template with his latest offerings.
The opening 90 seconds of the A: ‘Knibbie Never Comes Alone’ is all sparse atmosphere, static crackles and weird effects with just a sole note played over and over. The pulsing of a deep sine wave hints at what to come, and when that’s expanded on with a kick drum and bobbling bassline the whole thing begins to come alive. More life is breathed into the bleak landscape with the sounds of various robot activities, and the mystery of the bell-like melody which hangs in the air is never really explained before the last third of the track when the momentum really builds and claps and hats help drive the whole thing forward.
The eventual groove which reveals itself in the A side is extrapolated with the B: ‘Loose Hooks’ is a deeply burrowing affair with an extra heavy kick hitting ever four bars to give things an air of extra insistency. Above that, various dynamic samples shoot about like fire-flies in a night sky and all the while the train track rhythm builds up more and more steam until eventually it dissipates to only the sounds of an over worked circuit board. Maintaining his sense of bold and chunky rhythm, then, but finishing things with classic motifs of Minus in mind, Dice has made for an assured homecoming.

For some time now the combined forces of Mark Caramelli and Paul Hargreaves have been causing a huge stir under their guise, Death On The Balcony. Fuseing a range of influences from Nu Disco, House to Deep Techno and everything in-between depending on the time and space. Years of dedicated musical passion and an eclectic appreciation of numerous genres have lead to their sound becoming perfected and receiving huge popularity across the board.
2010 has been an amazing year for them so far with numerous DJ gigs and both their productions and remixes receiving mass support from some of the biggest players on the scene. The likes of Luciano, Soul Clap, Jimpster and Wolf + Lamb, to name a few, have all been charting their releases and supporting them with mass airplay. The recently released “Aquarian Exposition" EP on their own label, Magicbag, is an inspired homage to the legendary Woodstock Festival and has been awarded Mixmag's Tune of the month in the May 2010 edition. Their imprint, Magicbag is currently a very popular label and receives continued support from a diverse range of people ranging from Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs through to Jamie Jones, Brothers Vibe and basically the majority of the underground dance community. Look out for their next release on Magicbag which includes remixes by Gavin Herlihy and Soul Clap.
DOTB's DJ schedule sees them play at some of the best spots in the world alongside the likes of Moodymann, Dyed Soundorom, Josh Wink, Matthias Tanzmann and many more. Based in Leeds they run their own party called Throwback at The Loft. Throwback is currently one of the most popular nights in the city and recent guests have included Soul Clap, Craig Smith and Pete Herbert who are yet more artists that fully support Death On The Balcony in all that they do.

Maxime Dangles has grown to be a key new artist in the French avant-garde electronic music community and is creating waves around the globe with his unabashed approach to proper club techno music. His track Santé (which translates as - Cheers!)is a highlight on John Digweed's current Structures Two album, with its jittery tech-beats, joyous hypnotic melodic swing and well-timed hands-in-the-air moment.
Maxime Dangles is an artist buzzing with creative intention and this new 4-Track Modulation Ep on Bedrock features yet more amazing music. From the twisted spiralling climaxes of Astraktif, through the twisted modulations of Cafetiere,to the soaring acidic energy of Dihaiz and the hook ridden energy of Infinity, Maxime Dangles cannot fail to impress even the most tired of ears.
Born in 1985, Maxime discovered the world of nightclubbing at a very young age. He quickly became an excellent DJ but crucially also learnt how to create his own music. In 2004, he started to work on remixes and edits before developing his own musical imprint, which led to releasing tracks with the famous Kompakt label in 2006. Remixes of Scan X,Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Simian Mobile Disco, Royksopp, Moby etc have followed. Maxime has recently developed a live show and his his energy and passion are now making him rising star of the international electronic scene.

Carl Craig's imperious Planet E label drop this timely twelve which demonstrates that the Detroit imprint has reached the 20 year mark by ensuring the lesser celebrated artists are featured alongside the more established techno artists. It's also further compelling evidence of the inherent brilliance of Oliverwho Factory, a duo who are finally receiving the plaudits they deserve after several years bubbling under. Their contribution to this release, "Jealousy" stands apart amidst three other accomplished productions from Reference, Monty Luke and newcomer Ezana Harris. Obviously some credit must go to Carl Craig as he performs knob twiddling duties, but the track contains enough sweat inducing dancefloor potency to truly shine - if you can picture the best qualities of arch electro house hype merchants Spektrum and apply them to a thickly exhilarating Detroit house template then you'll have an idea of how good this track is.

Brian Kage is the founder of the record label Beretta Music. Along with a countless number of successful releases, Brian’s experience as a producer, DJ, and label-head has helped shape and catapult the careers of some of today’s brightest and best artists in the dance music community.

08. Kalden Bess - Funktion One (Alice in Panorama EP) [Analytic Trail | ANT032]
Canadian producer Kalden Bess makes his debut for Analytic Trail this Summer with the 'Alice in Panorama' EP – a three track release which focuses on dark, heavy grooves.
Bess' Ground Factory label has, across two years, developed a small but perfectly formed disography and has drawn attention to the Montreal-based producer from across the techno scene. Usually releasing as mOh, Bess has a similarly petite
discography but one that oozes quality.
'Alice in Panorama' opens with real purpose via 'Alice', a tightly looped peak time cut which contains enough funk to appeal to tougher house djs and techno die-hards alike. Vast reverbs create an enormous amount of space atop the powerful beats and repeated vocal refrains and panoramic effects whizz about the mix unhindered.
Power remains a key word for the second track, 'Panorama'. Skittering hats snake through the mix while relentless, machine-like grooves unravel underneath filtered textures. Uncomplicated, raw and undeniably rousing it's one of the most vicious tracks to appear on Analytic Trail in some time.
Finally, the aptly titled 'Funktion One' closes the EP with kick-heavy, controlled aggression. The strident vibe and linear arrangement makes for an infectious listen that evokes dark, smokey rooms shaking with bass.
This is an excellent EP of contemporary techno from a producer that shows serious promise. Kalden Bess' 'Alice in Panorama' is released late-August on Analytic Trail.
