Re: Just ordered this sucka...
There isn't much to say about the 9900 that hasn't already been said. I haven't gotten around to doing the typical review in terms of posting photos and screen shots, especially since there are tons of those around, but I'll get to a few personal impressions after 2 days of ownership and a good bit of fiddling around.
The Good:
The Touch screen - it takes some getting used to, simply because I have been so used to using the Track Pad for everything, but it's still nice to be able to scroll up and down when reading emails, viewing websites, etc.
The Larger Screen size - I never had the Bold 9000 but I am absolutely in love with the size of the screen and the improved resolution makes it even prettier. If you downsize the overall viewing font on the phone (like I do), there's just so much more screen real estate for your viewing pleasure, especially when you come from the smaller brethren - Bold 9700. The higher DPI (I believe 287) makes the images, text, font, and everything else displayed on the screen, so much nicer to view. Even photos and pictures look so much crisper.
The Larger Keyboard - Isn't the keyboard the reason everyone gets a blackberry? The larger size makes it so so so much easier to type on, it's a shame to even point it out. My pudgy fingers aren't double tapping neighboring keys anymore (as I did on the 9700) but I will admit, I find the comparative softness when pushing the 9700 keys better than on the 9900. These just have a more "clicky" feel than the 9700 (which is what I prefer, but to each his own). Notwithstanding, the larger size totally makes up for the improved typing experience.
The Performance - RIM did a fantastic job speeding up the device by optimizing the code to work well with the 1.2 ghz processor. It's much much faster than the 9700 (running both OS5 as well as OS6). The timer (when it's doing something) is absent a lot more and the device is generally ready to do just about as many instructions as your can feed into it.
The Browser - This is one area which RIM had totally ignored until OS6 was launched and even then, it was riddled with memory leaks. I can't tell you how many times the phone would freeze / hang because it ran out of memory when viewing non-mobile versions of websites. The 9900 is a 10 fold improvement, BUT, it still lags behind the brilliant user-experience of the iOS.
The Audio - I don't know if it's just me but the device sounds better when I connect it to my car through the headphones. Plus the scrolling through the album art by touch and tapping to hear the next song hasn't yet gotten old (albeit only 2 days of use )
Usable Memory - FINALLY have about 200 MB of available memory (when I got the device) and it's now down to 185 because of the apps I have downloaded. The Paltry usable 50 MB (without any useful apps other than BBM and Weather) on the 9700 when OS6 was installed, was really ticking me off and the memory leaks in nearly every build killed the phone after a couple of days and a reboot was just about mandatory. I know I could have used various OS shrinking apps but I tried it a couple of times and it froze my phone. So I just remained stock and stuck it out without any apps.
The Feel - The device feels brilliant to hold. The width of it makes it easy to grip, the metal band around the phone feels awesome, but that was short lived since I got my transparent ceramic hardshell on it soon after it was out of the box and just the presence of the phone is unlike any blackberry I've owned (since the days of the gargantuan 8700).
The Bad:
The Smaller Battery - While I haven't struggled with the battery dying on me, it does appear drain faster, especially being a smaller 1230 mAh as compared the larger 1700 (iirc) mAh batter on the bold 9700. As of now, the battery, with moderate use, ends up at about 25% remaining when the day is over. My 9700 had a little more than 60% left.
The Touch Screen - This is probably the first time you guys have seen an item being a good and a bad and I'll admit it was a tough one to consider but one to consider nonetheless. In all honesty, it's a novelty. With so many apps not working on OS7, there's only so much fun you're going to have running your fingers on the screen when reading emails / pushing buttons to instruct the device to do something. Moreover, mated into the fact that the screen is still small (compared to the iPhone or other larger android devices), the double tapping + pinch to zooming to make sites readable still makes it less "fun" of a device to use, especially when surfing the web. I cover some more of these aspects below (since the OS / Touch screen only complement each other).
OS7 - Is nothing but OS6 in a suit. Granted there are performance benefits that are immediately obvious, but other than that and a moderately fancier collection of icons, that's about where the flair of the new OS ends for me. Now one could argue that even iOs has been unchanged, but that's because in it's functionality, it is unlike any mobile OS you would experience as compared to OS7. I'm honestly done with the windows-esque right click menu system which provides more hidden menus/functionally behind. I know screen size is the biggest limitations for BBs with keyboards but why not have small icons to delete / reply / forward within the email or have tiny icons for back / forward etc. on the browser. What's the need to have a pop up menu by hitting the BB key. Defeats the purpose / usability of the touch screen, especially when it leaves scrolling up and down as the only usable feature. Now someone will turn around and say "well if you keep your finger for a couple of seconds on the page, you'll get a sub-menu", but that goes back to the point of having these hidden menus. Keep It Simple Stupid.
The App World - Still a while until some good apps come out on OS7. Most are written for OS6.
T-Mobile - Sucks balls in my area, the only reason I extended my contract with them was ATT isn't releasing the phone until November and I couldn't wait that long as my 9700 was showing signs of aging and I didn't want to move to ATT with a temp device and get slapped with re-stocking fees. With T-Mo, I'm stuck with "2G" service until I drive 50 minutes in any direction outside. Moreover, with all carriers releasing the device at $199, it was a bummer to pay $249 for it. Worst is if you buy it from TMobile, they charge you $299 (I got mine from Wirefly.com at the discounted price).
I'll post more as the days go by, especially camera quality etc. and HD video recording. I have seen some outdoor videos in 720p that looked BRILLIANT.www.mjwebhosting.com

Re: Just ordered this sucka...Blackberry Bold 9900
Wow that review is pretty damn detailed... thanks for that... STILL wouldn't trade an iPhone over a BB in a million years.
I never really understood your fascination of the BB over the iPhone, but I guess if its for work purposes, its understandable.~ You are what you think you are ~
