9 Out Of 10 DJs Hate Their Jobs

A new survey published by England's City & Guilds training organisation this week has revealed that just 13% of DJs say they're happy in their work.

The shocking statistic was collated from a poll of a thousand Brits who were questioned about pay rates, stress and whether they were their own boss.

Hairdressers surprisingly topped the UK happiness stakes (40%) and DJs also turned out to be a sadder bunch than plumbers (20%), florists (18%) and even butchers (14%).

One reason could be the hours they keep, according to an alarming feature published in the Guardian this week, which suggested that night-working is 'more damaging to health than 20 cigarettes a day'.

The newspaper also cited one (US) survey suggesting that 'marital breakdown increases by up to six times when one partner works nights', and another (Canadian) which claimed that 'men who work night shifts find it more difficult to acquire a partner in the first place' and also reported that irregular work schedules could be equally distressing in the long run.

"Research on insects and mammals forced to rotate their sleep/ wake cycle found that their lifespan decreases by up to 20%," they revealed.

Awesome, I'm so gonna be a DJ now.

Though they don't seem to distinguish between superstar deejays, club DJs, pub DJs and mobile DJs. I can imagine some of those may be a lot more enjoyable and rewarding.

Who wants to be a dj anyway.

It`s all about the production of music that counts.

how could playing in various clubs in various cities be boring... maybe we don't see what really goes down behind the scenes but i wouldn't mind living in the life of a dj... at least for a month

This survey must be applicabel to 'mobile' djs - i bet they didnt ask one underground dj at all. That is the life I would like, not a wedding dj

Surveys can be very misleading. but i'm sure that any type of DJ would go back to that if they were to work a normal job.

I guess when you enjoy something, it's fun but once it becomes your "job" they start to hate it. Likewise, I wonder how much of the professional athletes truly enjoy their jobs~
Music...it?s one of the greatest gifts from God that embraces our sorrows, relieves our worries, strengthens our mind, encourages our soul, builds our character, intrigues our wisdom and challenges our experiences. Music is a way of life.

ya i don't think this is the typical edm dj. I think these are mobile dj's that are being talked about.

well if you were obligated to spin stuff you didn't want to, your boss was an asshole i can see them being fed up...but in reality, if you love the music, it will never be boring..... most of us dj when we want to, not when we are told....

I can't even imagine being a mobile DJ for like bar-mitzfahs and stupid family gathering events of the like... but then again, think of an emcee.... that horrifying moment when you are faced with the reality of someone shouting into a microphone their overwhelmingly desperate need for you to hear you say "Ho!!!!!" and then pulling a creative genius stunt like saying, " I can't hear you!"

The thought of Verbally abusive harrasment and the use of force to get audience participation is more upsetting to me than each time I hear that the pope will recover fully again...

(job hunting and bitter about the thought of having to play any "office politics bullshit games" on any level... kissing ass isn't on my resume)
                          :?

It's probably mobile DJs and maybe radio DJs as well since they don't get a say in the music selection. All up to the PD depending on the station.
