i've had the 800s for about 5months and while they dont have all the bells and whistles of the 1000s they are quite cost effective. i purchased two CDJ800s for less than the price of one CDJ1000. they arent as rugged as the 1000s and as others have pointed out the pitch adjust is less accurate, there is no waveform readout, the jog wheels are looser than the 1000s, there is no CD text displayed, and you can only store 1 cue point per CD.
for the beginner or budget conscious DJ i highly recommend the 800s, if you have the cash to burn, then definitely nab the 1000s.Comment

I thought that the 800s had some improvements over the 1000s since they were released later. I can't remember what, though. Of course, the 1000mk2s take the cake.Comment

of course the 1000 is better but honestly, like mentioned above, you can almost get 2 800's for the price of 1 - 1000. i have one 800 and have had no problems with it.But hey, if youve got the cash, go with the 1000'sComment

i see no reason to have a cd full of mp3's to dj from. Do you simply take two cd's of the same stuff to a gig and go for it like that. That's not what being a dj is all about.Comment

Regarding the mp3?:
I realized this morning while showering ... why would I want mp3s for djing??? I just got an IRiver H340 and I'm obsessed now with MP3s. it would be nice to add one cdj to the djset up so I can play vinly and then throw stuff on the cdj that my friends' make or that I buy from Beatport.
thanks for the slap I'm just all wrapped up in the IRiver- how much to have sooo much music in the palm of my hand.Comment
