Heiko Laux and Steve Rachmad - The Viking

    Techno -
Techno veterans Heiko Laux and Steve Rachmad team up to deliver a smash EP on the Scottisch Soma label.

What we get to hear can be described as a 'best of both worlds' thing: Steve's Detroit-ish sound and Heiko's no-nonsense rhythms come together on this exciting three-track EP. Opening track Viking is a rough stomper in which a jumpy little bassline serves as the track's main attraction while the second track, Carlos, is a much more basic techno tune with a deep, constantly changing bassline. The last track comes in the form of 7Tine, a mid-tempo and relatively warm tune with a slightly off-beat kick and nice pads to it.

    Our verdict:
A great EP by two techno heavyweights featuring three rock-solid bombs.

    Rating: 7.8/10

Heiko Laux and Steve Rachmad come to SOMA Records with the Viking. The tracks blend the best of both producers; Rachmad’s Detroit influence shaped with Laux’s dynamic style.
The title track Viking, is led by a synth that sweeps in an almost hyperventilating rhythm that raising the track with a series of industrial ticks and clicks that flavour the German, Dutch and Detroit mix. A dark bassline leads the track into its climax where glitchy synths squeak and stretch before the track drops.
Carlos is a track that bounces with groove. Morse-like rhythmic bleeps carry the track cementing the individuality that is created in the EP. Awash with sweeping sounds, the track gains a smoother feeling of deep techno demostrating their delicacy.
7tine is a juggernaut with a dark, heavy rhythm, showing the industrial power of the pair’s production. Flanged distortion scratching like fingernails give the track a tense edge, while simple yet powerful synths steer the EP into an eerie conclusion.
