                  Re: Occupy Portland

American members, can we agree on most of the following?

Our economy is flat because there are no customers to buy things, thus no need for businesses to expand their work force. Customers are the "job creators." And when workers have had stagnant wages for decades, while the top one percent skim all of the profits, then there is no disposable income for the economy to run on. We have a customer problem. And it is because of the wealth inequality.

Why does a person default on their mortgage? Because their wages are flat or dipping, while prices are rising, and they are going into credit card debt to cover medical expenses because their job cut benefits (as insurance companies are covering less and charging more). Pay workers more and you stabilize the economy. By government taxes or by union strikes, the wealth needs to be redistributed if we are to have any hope of keeping a rapidly vanishing middle class.

                    Re: Occupy Portland

I think it's only part of the picture and the wealth redistribution comment reeks of Marxism. Raising the minimum wage only creates a negative feedback loop that will similarly cause prices to inordinately rise and thus inflation, leaving us in no better state than we were prior. Incentives for companies to keep operations in America (along with tariffs) might actually return some of the manufacturing base. The fact that nearly half of the population is not taxed is another elephant in the room, as well as what percentage of revenue the top earners actually provide (it's already significant and at some percentage point, I could see the well off moving their monies off-shore to protest the insatiable leviathan that is big brother). Eliminate many of the loopholes and credits if you must, even increase the capital gains by a tad. But the spending problem in Washington won't be fixed by throwing more money at it.

                        disagreed.

obviously the cure is to 1) raise minimum wage to $25.00/hr like they do in australia, 2) raise tariffs on chinese goods, 3) increase teh supply of money so more money is there to go around 4) call americans lazy.
