    Re:: DVD-R vs DVD+R

    I had Sky discs too. I was able to burn 2 out of 10 DVD-R's with them. The rest were fucked up during the burning or while closing the DVD and writing the Index at the end of burning. Never again.

          technically dvd+r can be made more compatible, because you can set what's called the booktype on it. basically at the time of burning you can burn the disc to read as a dvd-rom , which tricks standalone players into thinking it's a factory burned DVD.

          at this point though in dvd media, quality discs in either -r or +r will be both good. the quality of the media itself matters more than anything I think. I strictly use Taiyo Yuden media (for cd's or dvd's), which is hands down the best you can get.

            Hey, can I ask what you are using the DVD's for?? I.E. Movies, games, or data backup? If you're going movies than it doesn't really matter too much whether you go + R or - R... As long as you're using quality products (as in your DVD player, burner, and media are all good). Only movies: then just get a real good burner either + or - and you'll be fine. If you also plan to burn PS2 or XBOX games, you should certainly look for a good - R burner.

            The consoles love - R's.. and although they read + R's I have had some bad experience with TDK + R's and the PS2. Hands down the best brand for burning games is Ritek (Ridata) DVD-R's. You can find them for less than $20 a 25-pack. Lite-On makes cheap burners that do + R and - R, so if you can grab one of those. A lot of computer DVD burners like + R's more than - R... so if you're backing up a lot of MP3's or something to DVD you should certainly take a look at a burner that does both. Store brand DVD's SUCK (as in TDK, Phillips, Memorex) avoid them like the plague.

            Verbatim, Ritek, and Taiyo Yuden are the way to go.. although despite your claims, I have had trouble with Taiyo's in some DVD players.. and I've never had one problem with Ritek period.. but that's probably just luck.

              Not sure why you encountered problems with the Taiyos, I haven't had a problem myself nor have ever really come across any one on forums who say they've had a problem. I use my dvd burner mainly for data backup, but have never used it to backup games as I don't like console games.

              It's good to hear you've had good experience with Riteks, I guess one reason why I haven't tried to explore any other brands is because I just feel more safe using what seems to be held as the best out there. A couple years ago I had a real bad string of luck with data loss on hard drives (the infamous IBM Deathstar drives) so that kinda gave me a neurosis about data reliability.

              I do use Mitsubishi made Verbatim's to back up data that if, by some chance, the media were to fail I wouldn't feel too bad about. In all fairness, I don't really pay much attention to keeping up on all the good media out there (of which Ritek is for you), but my bank account would probably appreciate me exploring some things that are less expensive than TYs. I think a buddy of mine who is big up in dvd authoring and burning also likes Riteks.

                  I would go for Verbatim as well. TDK - R also didn't give me any problems. I basically use whatever I find at that moment, provided it's not totally unknown.
