What Simon said. I've heard as much great music this year as I have ever heard. I'm buying lots more tracks this year. I hate minimal , but I haven't heard any lately. thank goodness. ! Perhaps it's just the sheer volume of music that is out there. If there is more good music there has to be more bad music too I suppose.

      Re: Your worst nightmare (Top100)

I think there's often a big difference between the music you buy to listen to at home and the music you listen/dance to when out.

When Jeff Mills plays his 909 and drops it down to just the kick drum, the crowd go bananas - you can't get any more minimal than that.
You wouldn't sit at home and listen to just a kick drum for long though I don't think, you'd go bananas (in a different sense)

"minimal" has become a bit of a dirty word, translating to most people as boring. I wouldn't want to listen to tracks in that style onle all night, not my cup of tea at all.

But Hernan plays minimal tracks, as does Sasha. If minimal means a beat and a bassline then everyone does, it's a dj tool. The difference is they don't play another after it, then another.
They follow it up with a killer track. It's one of the oldest tricks in the book.

You'll remember the killer track but not so much the one before it that created the tension.

        Great post.

I also dislike the way the word "minimal" has become a dirty word, guys like Mills and Richie (under his Plastikman name) have been doing very minimal stuff for ages. Guys like Mike Parker and Donato Dozzy are following those same rules today. Yet I never fail to see a dancefloor destroyed by it (I should know, I play a lot of that stuff). In 2006 and 2007, the word minimal started to be employed as a way to genderfy lack of talent for creating good tunes, plain and simple.

            x2.

I actually think progressive is undergoing a new resurgence, I'm hearing melodies and vocals I never thought I'd hear again.

Also, we're talking about different 'minimal': There's the minimal stuff that Hawtin, Magda, Hood, et al play, and there's the 'minimal' used to describe pared down tracks that were being played by progressive DJs but I think they're only 'minimal' in the progressive context, they're certainly not 'minimal' compared to the Plastikman stuff.

And 'minimal' is not used to describe tracks that build a set before a peak.

this is my point exactly, minimal isn't just a trend of music it basically showed the vast majority of people just how minimal stuff has become in recent times, as for following up with a killer track i tend to disagree, not really feeling herman recently or sasha for that matter... i would go as far to say that i believe that sasha tend to be on of the ones i described earlier in this thread

This is now kinda besides the theme of this topic, but a couple of months ago, I remember reading "our" Chloe Harris own twitter, saying that dark prog (for example, because a lot of people here, including me, were/are into that sound) hasnīt actually gone anywhere, itīs just being called techno, now.

Maybe we've hit a kind of saturation point where new, imaginitive productions despite being original still remind us of something else? House music is pretty old now and doing something that doesn't sound like something that's already been done in some way is bound to get harder.

These "progressive djs" have been playing the same style now for 20 years so i don't believe there is such a thing as a "progressive context"

and yes, it is all techno

Actually I mainly listen to dance music at home as well. But you are right it isn't the same. Guess it depends totally on how you define minimal. To me it is bleep bleep, sounds and boring repetitive. There are better ways to create a tension. Which reminds me I also hate long breakdowns. I don't want to stop dancing and just stand around , and do the hands in the air thing when they drop the track.

                          Totally this !!!!!!!!

Seems everyone defines minimal differently, which means varied opinions.

                            Agreed.

It seems rather confusing comparing progressive to minimal I guess I can ask does it matter weather it falls under house or tech?

^^^^ Melodic techno is definitely becoming part of the new prog, but there is more to it. Progressive progresses But I wouldn't ever say that was dark prog, on the contrary the melodic techno adds a lighter note. imho of course
