then don't go apple, there aren't any free softwares available that will play mkvs and even the ones that are paid aren't easy to muck around with. apple really wants to control the ios ecosystem to ensure they milk you for all that they can. if movies is your thing, go android (galaxy tab or the transformer prime), they will play mkvs out of the box (at least the transformer does and so does my note) and you just need to find a site to get decent micro-hd mkvs and you're good to go.
another huge advantage is you can also download directly to your android device. good luck trying that with apple.
with apple, it'd be download to pc, convert to manageable size and compatible format, load in itunes, copy to ipad and then play. for every file you have, repeat process. with an android tablet, load browser in tablet, download link, save, enjoy.
