This week's DJ mix comes from German trio Brandt Brauer Frick who recently released their 'Mr Machine' album, as the expanded Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble, demonstrating their 'orchestral techno' sound.
Read Clash's review of the album HERE, we said it was "an addictive and very wonky wander around the reverberations of wood, catgut, ivory keys and stretched skins. It’s delightful and should raise the spirit of Thomas Brinkmann and Akufen from their deathbeds."
Sounding, and looking a bit, like an acoustic Kraftwerk, the trio's Paul Frick explains their objective in utilising acoustic instruments with dance music's structures and themes, "We had felt for years that most instances of combining techno and classical music lack an authentic approach. Instead of using only the typical epic orchestra or piano sounds, we love to explore the dirty and percussive sides of those instruments, adapting techniques from composers like John Cage or Helmut Lachenmann: preparing our piano with screws and rubbers, knocking against every single part of an instrument, until we find that one great sound."
