digital downloads, can you trust them?

I heard this rumor that record labels send mp3 files and not the original wave files to stores such as beatport. So can you really trust digital stores like beatport when they claim to sell you the original "untouched" WAV files. Could it be that they just encode the mp3 files back to wave and sell you that? we all know that once you encode a track to mp3 you dont get back the lost quality even if you encode it back to wav. Of course this applies only to stores that also sell in WAV format like beatport.

In other words, how can you be completely sure that what you get is an "unprocessed" WAV file and not some re-encoded mp3 file?

Well if i paid for a 192 file and got a 128 then i'd be well pissed and wanting to have a word.

yea but thats not what i mean, what i mean is if digital stores carry the original wav files at all, do record labels really send them the masters?

the best thing to do is ask beatport. they should give you an honest answer if they are respectable, in the least. i don't think they'd screw their customers like that.

ah, but if the quality is really noticeably worse, you should be able to tell, right? If you can't tell the difference, then what's the point of worrying about it.

so if they take the .wav and encode it to a 192 .mp3, you download it, and re-encode it to a .wav, will it have the same quality as the original .wav?

nope... it'll only sound as good as the 192kbps .mp3 file.

never, what was lost in the original .wav to mp3 conversion is lost forever

exactly.. so why does it matter if they have the actual .wavs or not? you arent downloading wav files from beatport or the other digital download sites. right?

you dont understand, beatport sells in 3 formats, mp3 at 192kbps, at 320kbps, and WAV

you dont download the wav files, they're just too big, they ship them to you on cd.

what i ask is are the .wav files really wav, cause it is said that the record labels dont really send the original masters, but instead an mp3 file or a wav file that was previously an mp3 file.
