"Anyone can play big hits and get a reaction"

Touring is a critical part of what Digweed does, and his schedule takes him well outside Europe and North America to destinations like Israel and Taipei. We asked him about where he feels dance music is at.

“The scene is split down the middle with the very commercial house DJs and the more underground DJs,” he muses. “The commercial side of the scene has never been so big, but it’s a million miles away from what I play. I think you can’t beat seeing a crowd go crazy to a record that they have never heard before. You have to work and earn that reaction. Anyone can play big hits and get a reaction.

he has definitely stuck to his roots all these years... occassionally i might question wth he's playing but nevertheless, he has always played what he wants and not succumb to commercial music. i still think he's one of the best live venues. long live the king!

He's right up there with Tiesto. That's for sure.

Ditto. But he has not yet touched Guetta.

Always carries around tons of quality new sounds - JD played a great set at Bedrock (4 hours) and then a different (but equally great) 2.5 hours at Sankeys the following night without repeating the music.

Not may DJs have the conviction to do that
              sigpicSimonR

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

Yeah, "Anyone can play big hits and get a reaction"
but not anyone can do a proper mix or create a climax, an atmosphere
put the right track in the right place, communicate a feeling using a theme,
communicate something, not just the act of putting music.
there is something called talent, and not everyone has it.

I agree with John, except that John seems to dismiss that getting the crowd to go off on a track is a bad thing. I'm all about the way he mixes, but it never hurts to sequence a classic tune in every so often. And that's a position I've stood by for years now.

I think this is exactly why he's still around and so popular. People notice this about him and respect/appreciate his talent and ability to move a crowd

Urgh Avalon Singapore sucked balls but glad to say the man still got it. I hadn't expected much cos the live sets of his I've heard, eg. Circus, hasn't left much impression.

But damn, he opened with a really cruisy and easy-listening track and by track 3 it was into the rabbit hole. Deep and hypnotic, all the classic Digweed sounds, not very minimal at all. There were some tracks that sounded a bit plodding but I blame it on the sound system.

So the bad bits. Let down by the club, the sound, the crowd. This was the first and only Digweed gig I've been to where he played LESS THAN 3 HOURS. When he came on, the club had two dancers come on stage gyrating away like tranvestites hookers. Mid way into the set, the bouncers let some fucktards onto the stage where they sprayed two bottles of champagne on to us, douched around for a bit, and left. So most of us upfront got champagne on us, the floor was slick and soon stank of champagne. Toward the end of his set, the floor was already half empty which was a serious let down and Digweed was talking to the management and pointing at stuff, I think something was seriously distracting him or pissing him off

                            We heard

which you really gotta hear on a club system cos it just sounds weird on the computer speakers.

                            and he ended with

Will try to update more IDs if my friend finds them
