On a weekend while some will be deep in the thick of WMC madness, the Harmonic boys will be holding down the fort in LA with their second installment of BASK Off-Season at The Standard, Downtown. On Sunday March 25, Harmonic plans to serenade all those Miami Blues with two tried and true house and techno powerhouses - TROY PIERCE and DAN GHENACIA. An afternoon with not only one, but TWO esteemed dj/producer/labelheads deems this day worthy of attendance.
Growing up in Indiana, by the electronic hotspots of Detroit and Chicago, it’s no wonder Troy Pierce was infected with the dance music bug early on. Since then, he’s developed into a pillar of the modern techno community thanks to world tours, live shows, albums and EPs under a number of aliases (Louderbach, Run Stop Restore) and as part of more than one studio collective. As one of the first users of Final Scratch, Troy has always looked outside of the norm to embrace and integrate technology into his sets. “I like making and playing weird music for weird people - those WTF tracks that stick in your head as a sound from another dimension” says the man whose close association to techno bastion MINUS has earned him a deserved and revered reputation during the years since first emerging. He recently founded a new label, Items & Things, with Magda and Marc Houle, which looks to break new talent, as well as tasteful tracks from the labelheads themselves. The Troy Pierce sound is one which has constantly veered from dense, layered and abstract to stripped down, acid infused and pulsing. His sonic palette is one that draws on a wide array of influences and reaches far outside the confines of the studio and into an otherworld entirely. Fusing techno with minimalism, darkness with light and heaviness with rhythm, this American has never been afraid to experiment in the outer regions of his vast musical universe. Despite an already impressive list of accolades to his name, Troy Pierce isn’t one to sit still. Keen as ever to confound your expectations, his label Items & Things, new Louderbach music, and a number of exciting collaborations are sure to do just that as he enters the next phase of his musical evolution.
Dan Ghenacia is the undisputed kingpin of the Paris techno scene, one of France’s hottest DJ exports and is the man who founded and ran for 7 years the critically and popularly adored Freak N Chic that sadly closed down a few months ago because of an unexpected dispute between the financial partners. Dan’s love affair with music ignited when he spent a year in California, soaking up early West Coast house and psychedelia. Dan parlayed this passion into a record selling business on his return to Paris, but as a true fan of the music he didn’t just want to peddle vinyl – he wanted to play it. In just a short period of time, he’s stamped his distinctive intelligent-techno-meets-deep-house sound on influential clubs like Fabric and The End in London, Tenax in Italy, and Space and DC10 in Ibiza. Both as a DJ and producer, and as a label’s head, Dan unfailingly stands for quality over quantity, substance over style, and, well, freakiness over mere chic. His Freak n’Chic label had been running for seven years and through his long-standing residency at Circoloco in DC10 and years of subsequent touring, the Ghenacia gospel has spread far and wide. Discovering artists such as Dyed Soundorom, Djebali, Anthony Collins and even releasing the debut Jamie Jones EP, Dan knows good music and continues to deliver it. After an acclaimed release on Crosstown Rebels, and the launch of Apollonia, a label he started alongside Shonky & Dyed Soundorom, look for even greater things from Dan as he continues to pursue his unique musical vision!
