    The Music

    01. Alex Niggemann - Don't Wait (Moodapella Dub) [Poker Flat Recordings | PFR128]

Düsseldorf born Niggemann has enjoyed a constant climbing success in recent years thanks to his precise tech house productions on 8bit, Tsuba and Supernature. Now based in Berlin, he arrives on Poker Flat with this, the first single to be lifted from his imminently arriving album debut. We don‘t want to tell you too much about the LP right now, but if these two tracks are anything to go by, be sure you‘re in for a treat!

´Don‘t Wait‘ (Extended Mix) layers Niggemann's trademark tight, percussive beats as it builds towards a surprising vocal arrival and a killer, positively hung bassline. Equally perfect for late night sessions as it will be for the coming spring summer season, basking in the sun, it´s a versatile and uplifting cut in the true Poker Flat tradition.

A ´Moodapella Dub‘ is included in the digital release that spaces things out towards more Italo disco territory, while maintaining all the key elements for the floor.

On the B side a dubbed out synth voyage unfolds with ´Curious‘. Working snappy drums and airy, wistful FX, Niggemann skillfully tells his moody story with passionate charm. Swirling synth pads lift before a mid-point break gradually introduces a second theme, cementing the young producer‘s able hand at writing melodies and creating strong, rushing feelings.

    06. Lewis Boardman - Bend [Souvenir Plus | SOUVENIRPLUS014]

Our fourteenth release is a double-decker of young artists, Lewis Boardman and Ezlv, each with three new productions.

The first half comes courtesy of two very talented young French Canadian producers, Maxime and Louis. As well as previous releases on the likes of Composite, Defected, they have their own label Suricate and play out all around their native Canada. ‘Sensacion De Control’ is a nervy after-hour groover, skittering percussion does battle with the chunky bass-line while a repeating Spanish vocal sample drives the track forward.

‘Everybody Will Survive’ is far more upbeat, a disco-tinged chorus daring the dancefloor to do as the track’s title says and ‘Awkward Angle’ jacks it up with synth-work ordered straight out of Chi-town itself.

Second up, is a trio of warm, deep numbers from the Liverpool-based producer Lewis Boardman. Fresh from his recent remixes of Yousef and Nina Kraviz, the Circus Club resident flexing his house muscle for Souvenirplus. ‘The Right Kind of Burn’ is a real slow-burner, an earworm chord refrain teasing repeatedly alongside the barely heard ethnic vocal sample that twists and turns.

‘Red Light Lullaby’ is a lot darker, peak-time dance-floor delirium aided by its squelchy bass-line and insistent drums, finishing up with the manic ‘Bend’ both channels being haunted by digital ghosts, the melody distorted to mere abstract electric crackles.

Support from Anja Schneider / Yousef / Troy Pierce

    07. Hollen - Tisana (Desempleados EP) [MKT Rec | MKT017]

The city of Naples continues to be a breeding ground of young producers through MKT Records. His name is Federico Aniello a.k.a. Hollen a young guy born in Napels in 1988, he already did some important productions on labels like N.O.I.A. Records, Italo Business, Evolution and Phobiq Records. Markantonio is glad to present Hollen’s debut on MKT records with this thrilling release that includes 3 tracks.

“Desempleados” has a warm bass and everything is pushed by a deep kick, percussions and hi hats in upbeat. The energetic pumping groove is the engine of this strong Tech – House track.

It’s time to increase the energy with “Miter”, made by an elastic kick and a rolling synth in background. Heavy hi hats driving the loop combined with old school claps, real funky Techno stuff.

“Tisana” has a fluid loop and a wide bassline, that moves around a strong and heavy kick. A carrying beat with vocal effects to refill the track, impressive Tech – House tune. Neapolitan school of Techno rocks again, a cool release, from a good producer for a superb international label.

    08. Of Norway - Libertine ft. Preben Olram [Connaisseur Recordings | cns048-6]

What is the definition of epic? We think it is Of Norway‘s newest track Libertine. A 12 and a half minute long Nu-Disco monster, mindblowing from beginning to end. Techno as it might have sounded had this genre already existed at Woodstock.

For Libertine, Preben Olram - a Norwegian multi musician and voice actor - joined the Of Norways and played live bass and percussions, as well as vocal percussions. Libertine has been the closing track of Of Norway‘s live set for around half a year, always causing ovations, screaming people and goosebumpish hands-in-the-air-moments.

After their winning release ‘Blott Ditt Eige Lam‘ on Silicone Soul‘s infamous Darkroom Dubs imprint, and their ambientish declaration of love ‘Song For Ava‘ on Connaisseur, which entered several chill-out charts, Libertine is the Oslo boys‘ next release in 2012.

We feel honoured that Offenbach deep house legend and Playhouse veteran Losoul did the remix treatment on the flipside. He did what he does best, loosening the outer flesh gently to get to the filet of the track. The result is a stripped down afterhourish deep house track with techy references and big balls. It is stunning how he transformed the original track‘s sweet melody into something crawling, almost spooky. Thanks Pete for this Killer!

Furthermore, cns048-6 features the next part of our Erich Proksch papercut artwork series.

    10. John Digweed & Nick Muir - 30 Northeast (Julian Jeweil Remix) [Bedrock Records | Bed97R]

The buzz around John Digweed and Nick Muir’s 30 Northeast was intense last summer when it was released on Bedrock. In its original form it was a spine-tingling, fizzing, spiralling, big-room monster that caused a commotion everywhere, a hard act to follow? Most certainly! But John Digweed’s impeccable A&R skills have not let us down with his selection of the acclaimed rising star of French techno, Julian Jeweil, to remix this beast.

The Marseille born DJ/Producer has been setting the world alight with his productions on Richie Hawtin’s Plus8 label (“Baboo” and “Hermanos”) and Sven Vath’s Cocoon (his “Soho” track reached No.1 in the Beatport techno chart), so its no wonder that he has delivered two stunning techno interpretations that are powerful, subtle and euphoric in perfect balance. Julian Jeweil’s towering talent, on display here, most definitely mark him out as someone to keep on your radar throughout 2012!

For fact finders, “30 Northeast” refers to the street address of Vagabond in Miami, USA. The club that so effectively captured the energy of a John Digweed DJ set that it became his first ever commercially available live DJ mix. “John Digweed Live at the Vagabond”, recorded at the 9th Annual Bedrock/Creations Party at Vagabond Miami 27th March 2010, was included on the “Structures’” bonus DVD as yet another musical milestone for the label. A live mix complete with slideshow, it captured the essence of an amazing Bedrock Party for posterity.

                  05. Matador - Klay (Spooks EP) [M_nus | MINUS117]

                  Artist/Title: Matador | Spooks EP

                  A1. Spooks
                  A2. Kenekt
                  B1. BamBam
                  B2. Klay
                  D5. 124 ToneTool (Digital Only)

Matador is a Dublin based DJ, live performer and producer who has been releasing his own twisted but organic take on techno for the last four years. Late last year came the huge Kingswing EP on Minus and now this Spooks EP sees him step-up once again for a 5 track outing which balances his usual melody with a real techno drive.

The title track opens proceedings with predatory, roughshod bass tone running underneath blippy melodies, snappy house influenced percussion and a dark male vocal where “Kenekt” is all out sci-fi weirdness. Spiralling space ships, undulating basslines and plenty of well-defined percussion all add up to a snaking track that really works its way under your skin.

On the flip, B1 “BamBam” is the most heads down and streamlined techno offering of them all before “Klay” is the EP closer which manages to bend and drip little melodic droplets down the face of slinky hi-hats and deep, rolling basslines. As well as all this, buyers of a digital persuasion also get “124 ToneTool” – a four and a half minute ambient exercise that explores beat-less eerie sounds, modulated blips and sci-fi atmospheres.

All in all, then, a meaty package baring all the classic hallmarks of the Minus sound whilst at
the same time offering a unique Matador perspective.

The tracks always sound better live on a decent sound system ... a stream can't do the music justice. After a few plays it's a real grower, and sounds bigger on my hifi than my laptop.

Crowd sound like they enjoyed it + remember this was an early set too so I assume JD wasn't going full throttle as the crowd would be there til 2pm the next day :

                        Floor 2:

12 mins in, sounding good, digging the sound he's playing. Very tight groove. This would bode well if he played his usual longer set.

And he had good stuff to say about the party:

Thank you TimeWarp. What an amazing festival! This should be the template for festivals around the world, quality music and amazing crowds in every arena. Hope to see to again next year.
