A stellar cast. Good to see Benicio back in Hollywood.
But to me it just seems like another drug run/gang movie?
Maybe it's The Wire overhaul I'm getting exposed to.

^Yeah looks like another standard-ish drug movie. Hoping it is better than normal due to Oliver Stone and Benicio Del Toro. He hasn't done anything in a while and is one of my favourite actors.
Yeah ditto. I think this was an desperate attempt by Mr. Stone. just got some big names for the heck of it.
Look I'll still check it out.
And Travolta has he aged or does he just look fatter?

It's not a terrible movie, but it doesn't quite live up to some of Stone's more bombastic movies like Scarface (which he wrote coming out of rehab) or Natural Born Killers. Part of the problem is the leads can't really hold their own against the more experienced members of the cast like Benecio Del Toro, John Travolta (who's absolutely great in this as the slippery DEA agent that's playing both sides of the law) and Penelope Cruz (who's Telenovela-ish take on her character is pretty over the top, but still entertaining). Any time the main characters share the screen with one of them, they almost wilt and get blown off the screen.
Taylor Kitch is pretty good as the ex-Navy seal with a possible screw loose and a death wish, but Aaron Johnson (from Kick Ass) doesn't get the chance to shine with his character transformation - the transition is a bit too quick for my liking, and is probably missing some character development because of editing to keep the movie run time short. It's a shame too, his character has a lot of promise and could have really elevated the movie. Blake Lively looks really good, but her character is so underdeveloped that she's more of a plot device than an actual character.
Stone does manage to slip some political commentary into the mix early in the film, but it slips away the further they get into the movie, as the action starts to get more severe and brutal as the film goes on. Also didn't care for the AI like double ending - felt a bit like a cop out.
The book killed the movie. Benicio and Travolta had the best scenes. Surprisingly the movie had a lot less action as well. I thought it would be the other way around.
