before the RIAA started suing people here in the states for sharing commercial music on p2p's, i regularly purchased cd's i couldn't find online, ripped them to my hard drive, & shared them. sometimes when a cd was released i wouldn't wait to find it online. i purchased it, ripped it, & shared it.
nowadays, i only download & share livesets. i find that i have little use for commercial releases...sigpicComment

I definitely buy albums of my fav dj's just because they tend to have given my the best nights out. So I figure, why not put some money in the pocket. The only things I leach are live sets...if those were put into albums, I'll buy them too.Comment

Like most have said, its about testing it out first. Thats what the internet is about IMO. I'm glad I downloaded the new Beastie Boys album before I bought it because I would never buy that trash. And I love the Beastie Boys, so if it hadn't come out on the internet first, so I could listen to it, I would have been very unhappy with the purchase. It was ok, but I may never even listen to it again, so I'm just glad I didn't buy it.
The other thing is just like I said with the latest B Boys, albums get released on the internet early. A lot of the times I will get albums months before they come out, especially in electronic music. So a lot of times, I just download it to hold me off, and if I still love it when it comes out, I buy it. There are exceptions though. I got that latest Crystal Method Album almost 4-5 months before it even came out in stores. So I was pretty sick of it before it even came out, but I did buy it any way even though I haven't really listened to it since I bought it.
Another example is the Velvet Rovolver album. Good stuff, but I'm not going to buy it. Sorry it just wasn't that good. I will, however, go see them live if/when they ever come to Denver. And I might buy a t-shirt too. IMO, thats how you get a good sense of the band any way, and thats where they make most of their money. Why pay $15-20 for a CD when its the RIAA and those stupid bastard bitches that are getting most of it."The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws." - Tacitus (55-117 A.D.)

I'll buy any GU album without question as soon as it comes out no matter who it's by. I generally download stuff just to see what it's like before I buy it. If it's good then I'll always buy, if not then I delete the mp3. Have a couple of old albums on mp3 that I can't get in the shops anymore. However, I downolad loads of movies that I never intend to buy. Maybe that's because there are just too many shit ones out there and it would cost me too much to pay to see em all. I buy movie classics and box sets normally like aliens, lotr, star wars etc.Comment

I used to dl everything, but lately I'm having a change of heart. Ever since I discovered lossless audio codecs (FLAC is particular) my attitude toward mp3s has dropped immensely. Plus what ddr said about Best Buy is the whole truth. Most of their new release CDs are $9.99, Involver included. To me there is no match for the original CD quality sound and FLAC makes storing full no loss of quality albums more realistic. All I really dl now is mixes, and if they sold them online in some form of lossless audio I'd buy them too.
I listen to most of my music on my computer so what I do is buy the CD, rip it and encode to FLAC and store the original so it doesn't get fucked up. I mean come on...the new Killswitch Engage was $7.99 at Best buy when it came out. If you can't afford to break off that little amount of money for a band you are a fan of then you obviously aren't that big of a fan.Comment

The last album I bought without listening to first was Tyrant - Fabric and it was awful. I usually dl and give a listen and then if I like it I'll buy it. Also as soon as a cd is released I'll delete it from my shared files.Cat formerly known as Cheshire
