    [ms] birthday
    Mercuryserver 10th birthday (2012)

    HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY [MS]

Its hard to believe that another 12 months has gone by and [ms] has reached yet another milestone ... this time its a rather momentous one.

Out of small things and a shared mutual interest (not least being a passion for music) big things grow. Sometimes several random events and coincidences collide, as a result something very special & magical can happen.

Now seems a good time to take a step back and reflect on events a decade ago, when in 2001, one of the most infamous clubs to grace this planet was causing a road block around 530 West 27th Street on a particular Friday each month. On the 4th anniversary of a couple of British DJs appearing in NYC an Indian dude has a musical epiphany, probably one not too dissimilar to the type of electronic right of passage that many people here have experienced, although the time and the place probably trump a few of us in terms of bragging rights.

A few weeks later, while in a car with a friend, the deep dark tribal and progressive rhythms beats signals & sound-waves from that night came through the speakers. A hunt for the source of this sound took our protagonist to Audiogalaxy, an FTP site with an index called The Borg Search that quickly evolved into a peer-to-peer file system where music was being shared amongst a strong and growing community without geographic constraints.

The Indian dude forged a bond with a guy in Germany who liked his first name so much he used it twice .. although this could also be as a homage to a dutch palmtop software firm that went on to make a few €uros helping people navigate in a 21st century type of way. You see, technology and a degree of nerdiness also came to be key factors in this story ... as over time and out a combined determination & destiny to pool resources, an idea was formed after a bloke appropriately nicknamed ‘e’ knew somebody that had a spare domain name going.

And so, out of these modest roots and humble beginnings the idea took shape and a quite unique destination on the net was born. A place that many of us call our internet home was established, this was a place that would change many peoples lives forever and things would never be the same again.

Over the years many lifelong friendships and unbreakable bonds have been formed. Also along the way some people have been lost, some sadly forever - gone but certainly not forgotten. One thing is certain, many of our lives have been enriched and changed by this chain of events. Perhaps it is too tumultuous a task to even begin to convey the appreciation and thanks that we have for the people behind the scenes, these people work tirelessly in an (often) unwavering dedication to the entity that [ms] has become.

On reaching this momentous point in time, mercuryserver’s 10th year is clearly a time for celebration (and it's fair to say that a few of us like a good party). But for now, please take a moment to pause and reflect on what [ms] has come to mean to you. Most importantly, please take your time to thank the key people on this site that we all often take for granted.

A decade, 10 years, 3652 and a bit days, 88,000 hours (probably the equivalent in hrs of unplayed music stored on our hard drives) ... over 5 and a quarter million seconds is a heck of an amount of time and commitment to a cause.

So, fuck yeh, happy 10th Birthday [ms] !!!!!

Here’s to many more years of plurring ... I believe this stands for Peace, Love, Unity, Respect, & Responsibility (just one of the many many daft things that [ms] has taught me over many years of post scanning).

Oh yeh ... and there’s a few DJ mixes too (be honest, many of you just jumped to this bit).

Of course, if you didn’t know it already, the Indian bloke nicknamed ‘e’ was ‘encryption’ (now better known to us all as Kamal), the club was a place named Twilo and the German dude & founding father is of course Tom (TomTom to his inter-web friends and a chap so great we named him twice). This story wouldn't be complete without adding our own Prince Charming into the (now) Holy Trinity, as Adam (Picklemonkey) has really helped keep [ms] in shape behind the scenes with his tireless work and lots of computer techy things I don't profess to understand, aside from the DJ Database that takes us to the next level on the net. Kudos to Kansas !

The DJ that sparked things off was John Digweed ... apparently he’s still going strong and doing pretty well these days. ‘Diggers’ did have a radio show on a former London pirate radio station named Kiss100 for 10+ years ... but a bit like [ms] his radio show has grown and spread its wings across the globe, to over 45 countries, as Transitions was later born (and has since reached 400 episodes).

John has kindly provided a mix to help mark and celebrate this fantastic point in the crossing of our histories, and a couple of longstanding [ms] family friends named Hernán and Chris have too, along with two emerging players/movers/shakers in the world of electronic music.

You see out of small things, often very big things do grow. And long may this continue.

John Digweed makes [ms] over the moon with an extra special 10th birthday gift !

Well it just wouldn't have felt right if Mercuryserver hadn't pulled out all the stops to get a little something from the main man !! John Digweed is certainly the sites most influential DJ, with his radio show having brought about our very existence and we continue to host his Transitions show and other mixes, bringing together fans new and old, debating the intricate details of each set and participating in the age old art of trainspotting and ID'ing tracks.

Diggers has somehow found time in his ridiculously busy schedule to break open his infamous vault, delving into his DATs to bring us an absolute classic from 2010 recorded at Moonpark in Argentina. Not only that, but John wishes us happy birthday and has given us some thoughts about the site. The theme being very much one of mutual respect and a shared appreciation of our support to the non-commercial part of the electronic scene

As ever, Digweed is all about the music. Aside from sheer talent, the main thing that keeps Diggers at the top of his game is that continued passion for new music and his unwavering drive in a relentless search to unearth new gems that can be fitted within a live set or played on the radio.

No two sets are the same - day in day out, hour by hour this guy is listening to existing producers, new producers, unknown producers, signing up tracks for his label, working through tracks from hundreds of other labels, scouring beatport and across the internet for pieces that may have been overlooked, but mesh perfectly with his sounds and vision (as Pete Tong says, for many John is probably the best sequencer of electronic music out there). This is all done so that listeners can hear something new, expanding their musical horizons and placing their trust in someone with a fine ear for music, someone that has crafted his art over the past 30-years. So we are very proud at [ms] to have been given such an exclusive.

2012 has already been a significant year for John Digweed. We have seen the return of his monthly Bedrock parties at XOYO in London - each month has been rammed and the night has really developed, with upstairs resident Jozif bringing his own brand of savvy house. Transitions goes from strength to strength, hitting 400 episodes (and the radio shows will reach its 12th year in September) - the quality of the show and guests has again been top notch. Bedrock the label continues at pace, with a relentless release schedule of quality music, balancing the big names alongside emerging new talent - this year saw the first WMC release with Underground Sound of Miami and a Collaborations CD with Jimmy Van M / Oliver Lieb.

On the gig front, John continues to be in demand across the globe. Aside from Bedrock @ XOYO he will again host a Bedrock Arena at SW4, there were five WMC dates, a fantastic gig at the new Warehouse Project venue, a Sankeys re-appearance, tours of Australia, the far east, US, Mexico and South America. The latter had a massive standout gig, an event that left John buzzing about the crowd and set for days and weeks after ....

Argentina is known for its love of dancing, electronic music and a good party - the crowds have a unique energy and are happy to party throughout the night. Twin this with Diggers on the decks, at the top of his game, and 'Live in Córdoba' is born.

This 3 x CD set has had rave reviews already, signed copies are still available if you act fast >>
    http://bedrockmusic.bigcartel.com/

The Córdoba set and Argentina theme tie in very nicely to John's exclusive [ms] birthday set - this one is an absolute stonker that deserves repeat plays. The file is also set up for your i-phone / i-touch or other similar device so that you can read in detail about the music involved. John Digweed and Mercuryserver pushing the boundaries forward ... here's to another 10 years !

    Enjoy !

Thank You For The 10th Birthday Present Hernán !

Hernán Cattaneo has been a big friend to mercuryserver over the years, even thanking our very own TomTom, Ariel (and Mercuryserver) in the sleeve notes for his Sequential release notes. Here Buenos Aires finest son provides a very special mix that brings us the sound of South America, as Argentina's #1 DJ delves into his proud label and production catalogue to deliver the very best of his and Soundexile's work.

This past year has been massive for the Sudbeat boss. 12 months ago he was humbled by having the unique opportunity to DJ at Liverpool Cathedral; it would be fair to say this was a spiritual and emotional experience, as a respectful set brimming with melody nearly took the roof off this vast Gothic place of worship.

That night I was lucky enough to have a chat to Hernán before his set, when HC confirmed the major news that his radio show would be starting up again. And so Hernán's show on Delta_FM has just passed to half century mark, bringing his legion of fans worldwide the latest underground sounds & emerging artists each and every week in a seamlessly crafted one hour journey.

With huge gigs from the main stage at SW4 to Moonpark to Creamfields, from Warung to a residency at Ministry of Sound, to hosting his Sudbeat Tent at Dance Valley and tours of Japan/Australia, Hernán continues to be at the very top of his game - as this mix clearly shows.

Hernán also talked to me about his Sudbeat imprint with immense pride - it would be fair to say that the label mirrors his ethos, in a mission to a spread deep house groove and musicality across the world. His love of music and pride in South America always shines through and Hernán goes about his work with tremendous enthusiasm and a smile on his face.

Hernán, just like [ms] has come a long long way in a huge journey these past ten years - from modest roots, though sheer hard work and talent Hernán Cattáneo has taken a deserved place on a world stage and in our hearts.

Of course I couldn't end without mentioning possibly the biggest highlight of all ... Hernán's very own [ms] emoticon which nods appreciatively in time to the deep hypnotic chuggy beats that the maestro plays

Global in ethos, South American in spirit, Sudbeat the new label from Argentina’s traveling electronic ambassador Hernán Cattáneo. Many months in the making and the product of two decades playing the world’s most important festivals & finest dance-floors, Cattaneo’s Sudbeat will showcase sounds from established producers, untapped talent, South American innovators and Hernán himself.

Listen to one of Hernán’s own perfectly constructed sets and you will hear no emphasis on genre or style — instead the focus is on musical depth and quality. The sound of Sudbeat will follow a similar path.

Be it the deepest grooves, the most hypnotic progressive or melodic techno, every colour of quality modern club music will be represented as Hernan strives to cast light on the many vibrant global sounds he encounters each week.

Blending the most modern and melodic textures, Sudbeat will be presenting releases from names like Danny Howells, Guy J, Henry Saiz & Marc Marzenit as well as Hernán’s own creations alongside producers like John Tonks, Martin Garcia and Soundexile.

    http://www.mercuryserver.com/forums/djdb.php?id=soundexile

Soundexile are Oliverio Sofia & Pablo Alejandro Carr (aka Baunder). Formed in December 2006, the guys had a clear idea of what they wanted ... not to sound like anyone else.

In an era, where cloned copies are made of each successful producer, where music lost it´s soul, just to become a mere income, these guys have the nerve to state: “... we´re not gonna sound like anyone else, we won´t stick to formulas, and we´ll make music for the fun of it, and for everyone to enjoy...”
And that´s exactly what they´re doing.

One track may have minimal influences, while the other borders techno, some will be sung, some will be downtempo , and some will be just pure experimentation. This attitude has made them some nice friends in the music industry, such as Hernán Cattáneo, Sasha, Satoshi Tomiie, Laurent Garnier, Anthony Pappa, Nick Warren, Ben Watt, Oliver Klein & D-Nox to name but a few.

Soundexiles great working relationship with Hernán took shape with his two most recent Renaissance: The Masters Series releases. Also, prestigious record labels such as Sudbeat, Natura Sonoris, Haçienda, Monique Musique, Urbantorque, Triptik, Sprout & Kumquat Tunes have released several of their tracks/remixes and Soundexile have made it into Beatport´s Top 10 chart.

This year will also see the guys work on a full album to be played live with 2 laptops, 2 controllers, assorted fx & keyboards and a drum pad, for those Terry Bozio moments.

As the guys themselves state in their website:

“... we could bore you with why we chose Soundexile as our name, but we know that in the end, the music is the only thing that matters. We put our hearts and souls into each song, and we benefit from the diversity of influences each one of us has, to break the barriers of genre and style, and make a different type of electronica...”

Its great to be pushing the boat out for Mercuryserver's 10th Birthday, and I'm especially pleased that we have got Chris '40oz' Fortier on board with an absolute stonker of a set.

For anyone that is in the know musically, Chris should need little introduction - from DJ'ing at the likes of Twilo, to his iconic Fade Records imprint, to compilations for Bedrock and Balance, to an extensive roll of honour with his own productions, artist LP and remixes, this guy garners nothing but respect.

After laying low, Chris is a back with a bang of late - Fade have again been putting out quality music and 40oz remixes have been getting consistent plays on Transitions.

As ever, Chris delivers a masterclass in sequencing and mixing - with unexected twists and turns. Sit back, buckle in, and enjoy 'Mercury Served' !

    Chris Fortier Biography

While many people may claim to know Chris’ sound, with their focus on labeling him one thing or another, Chris is equally as focused on his efforts to push back the musical boundaries. It is testament to the man that he continues to develop his sound and musical direction, after all, as the man says himself “I just like to play good underground music, I don’t limit myself. I am growing musically everyday, and the music I create and play reflects that”.

It is artists such as Chris Fortier who are inextricably linked to the underground dance music scene that are the genuinely pushing the sound forward. Chris’ determination to continue to push the envelope can be seen in all aspects of his career. Proof of this can be found on his now classic triple CD compilation Balance and his recent solo productions including his stellar debut artist album As Long As The Moment Exits.

The Balance 007 CD was a integral part of the now worldwide successful Balance series and brand. The album was a musical forecast of the fresh and exciting underground movement as we know it today. It is little wonder the CD was name checked for compilation of the year by numerous international magazines and websites. Taking his production a step further in 2007, his debut artist album was released to countless plaudits and impeccable praise. Followed by the remix version of the album saw Chris work along side the likes of
Joel Mull, Ed Davenport, Mark Broom, Someone Else, Bruno Pronsato, Pheek and Maetrik.

Under his 40oz production guise Chris has released the several EPs and remixes that musically spreads comfortably across labels such as Bedrock, Wave Music, Cocoon, Kompakt or Get Physical. Recent remixes of
Jim Rivers, Pfirter, Alexi Delano, Adultnapper, Derek Marin, Alland Byallo and John Selway, show Chris’ genre defying sound at it’s underground best. Not satisfied with status quo, Chris looks for the boundaries to continue to be pressed and pushed with each coming musical excursion.

Chris has been a consistent figure on the world tour circuit with a professional DJ career spanning 19 plus years. He has continually been a crowd favorite, confirmed by his very first residency at the legendary “Aahz” in Orlando through to residencies at The Cross in London and at Twilo in his adopted home of New York. Behind numerous singles, remixes, artist albums and no less than 9 commercially released mix albums, you can catch him as easily in Tokyo as in Buenos Aires and all points in between on any given weekend.

To those that know Fortier’s history, they know to expect plenty more to come, for those that are just getting initiated, Welcome!

Mercuryserver is always very happy when one of our own does rather well. Much like this site, Darin Epsilon started from humble beginnings, growing his craft over the past decade. During this time he has gone from a well liked and amiable member of the community, posting about his love of electronic music and specific tracks/artists with other like minded people on the board, to modestly talking about his own mixes & music before initial forays into club nights. Sheesh ... it only seems like yesterday that he was excitedly talking on the board about moving from the windy city to LA.

Many members post/promote their mixes here ... a special Mercurysessions mix followed, and the rest is history ... see, making it as a DJ is easy !!

Well almost .. in Darin’s case talent, hard work, dedication and a commitment to music have been key, getting him noticed by people in the industry (and being a nice bloke also helps). Just read Darin's selected bio (extended version on our DJ database and his Soundcloud etc.).

Now that he has a busy schedule and popular radio show to promote its great that Darin taken the time to provide a special mix and stayed true to his [ms] roots.

    Darin Epsilon (Selected Biography)

Internationally acclaimed DJ, producer, radio host, and label owner Darin Epsilon is often referred to as a leader of the Progressive & Tech House scene. His Perspectives radio show and podcast, along with his frequent guest appearances on Sirius XM Satellite Radio, allow him to reach tens of thousands of listeners on a regular basis. His Soundcloud page alone has over 200,000 total plays and currently receives a whopping 10,000 plays per month. He recently launched his record label Perspectives Digital as an extension of the brand, further solidifying his influence and presence within the global dance community.

From a gifted student of music to former record shop employee, to former director of a college radio station and influences such as Leftfield, Future Sound of London, Paul Oakenfold circa 1999, to Sasha & Digweed to more recent times that mirror this journey : gifted producer, digital record label owner, to having his music played by Hernan Cattaneo on the now legendary Metrodance radio show in 2007 - to remixing Hibernate’s vocal anthem Left Alone for Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label, riding high in Beatports Top 25 Progressive House chart and being included in Paul’s Perfecto Vegas compilation on iTunes.

Within Los Angeles, where Darin currently resides, he often plays for the city’s most prestigious clubs, including the likes of Avalon and Vanguard. Now global brands such as MTV, American DJ, American Audio, Elation Professional, and Global Truss have all called upon him to provide the soundtrack to their videos. His music can also be found in the films Ecstasy and Slip Cue, placing him in a small category of producers that have ever made it onto the big screen.

With hard work, passion, pure dedication to his art, and support from the industry’s most revered names, this Chicago native turned LA transplant aims to prove that this is only the beginning to a long and promising career.

Its great to have another much valued member of the [ms] community pull out all the stops for a special 10th birthday mix. Iffy / NID is better known to the wider world as Nomad In The Dark, a remixer turned producer turned DJ, who initially came to our attention with a stellar remix of Sasha's classic 1996 solo production 'Ohma' [Deconstruction 743214340219] which opened Transitions Episode 222:

    http://soundcloud.com/nomadinthedark/sasha-ohmna-nomad-in-the-dark-remix

Transitions 222 is an especially poignent episode for our community, as it includes a dedication from Diggers at the end of the show to the late Steve James, a big fan, much loved member of the [ms] family, and talented DJ in his own right.

Steve’s loss was a massive blow to everyone at the time - the gap left is something many of his close friends here are still struggling to come to terms with. That the show is started by a subsequent new member demonstrates that our community will always move on, the forum dedicated to ‘Jibby‘ also shows that the people leaving a lasting impression here will never be forgotten.

So it’s especially heartwarming to see someone like NID doing well, as Nomad subsequently garnered even greater attention with the sublime, haunting & mystic sounds of 'Neriya' - which was caned by none other than Sasha. I vividly remember hearing the ‘man like’ dropping this gem at Sankeys in Manchester to a rapturous reception from the crowd. At first we though it was a Coe/May production, and that speaks volumes for the quality of NIDs music. In 2009 Nomad In The Dark was Sasha's breakthrough producer in DJ Mag, making us all very proud !

Check out Iffy's Soundcloud for the sheer variety of top notch productions on the likes of Stripped, Hype Muzik, Global Underground, Audio Therapy, Baroque, Endemic, Tetsoko, Release Musiq and Nick Warren’s Hope Recordings.

Even better still, check out Nomad's 10th Birthday Mix ... its rather special.

    Nomad In The Dark Bio

Sasha’s pick is usually a smart bet. In 2009 Sasha named Nomad in the Dark as his pick for breakthrough dj/producer in DJ Mag. Billed as one of the “the leading prog producers of the moment”(Harley Augustine of Kiss FM Melbourne Australia), over the past few years Nomad in the Dark has moved to the forefront of progressive house’s new breed of producers.

Since 2008 his productions and remixes have received steady praise and support by Sasha, John Digweed, Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren; to name a few. His work and dj mixes have been regularly featured on dance music shows including John Digweed’s Transitions and Pete Tong’s Essential Selection on BBC Radio 1.His own dj mixes have been featured on Kiss FM in Melbourne Australia, Pure.fm and on Proton Radio where his Dj mix for Dave Seaman’s Audio Threapy recordings reached the number one spot keeping John Digweed out of the top spot. As an accomplished dj he had headlined festivals alongside Rabbit in the Moon and Charlie May among many others.

Hailing from South Asia and bringing along experiences living in Africa and North America, Nomad in the Dark’s music is a collage of his influences, ranging from Asian folk music to minimal tech-house. It is a sound that seamlessly layers and blends varied global soundscapes and melodies with cutting edge house music that never loses focus on the groove.

With a string of releases lined up including work on Global Underground, Balance, Hope and Stripped Recordings. Nomad in the Dark looks set to evolve even further in 2011. As Neil Quigley (Urbantorque) predicts “A bright future awaits him.”

Re: Happy 10th Birthday Mercuryserver !!!!

What a massive day this is and what a massive addition to celebrate it. I believe John has not provided a mix before to any other site and we couldn't thank him enough for doing so this time around.

This has been, and continues to be, an emotional journey for us all behind the scenes. We might not be as involved in the daily chatter, distracted with work and the daily grind. But whenever a good set comes around, news gets around and we always find time to come together on here, to download/share and enjoy it. That has been the fundamental premise behind this site and it continues to be there for those always looking to grab a slice of edm excellence.

All said and done, we are happy we continue to remain here and share what we mutually love the most.

But the unexpected return from the site, for me, is the unique friendships and bonds created over this time, that we share so well. Not only with the ones who are here with us, but those who will always remain with us in spirit. (Jibby my bro, D4N, this one is to you both).

This site is nothing without the music and the friends who share it. And I am grateful I have had the opportunity to celebrate both in this life.

Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart, and to Simon for taking the effort until 2:02 last night in putting this massive thread together (kudos mate).

    Happy 10th

HOLY FUCK is it that time already? And ten fucking years. Jesus. Wow. A strangely emotional moment reading this. 10 years is a lifetime on the internet; it's still startling and amazing that a virtual space like this is invested with so much laughter and tears shared with so many people most of which I've never met—beat that facebook! I've said this before but it would be a great honour to one day meet everyone and share the music. Big thank you to everyone who made this possible, the mixes are just the icing.

I got pics and video. But I will upload them in the morning. I need to smoke this nice phat joint and just close my eyes and replay the amazingness in my head.

Thrilled to see Nomad in the Dark there !! Chris is always there for us Such a lovely guy. I have actually bought nearly all the tracks on on Hernan and Soundexiles mix so I know I'm going to love it. !! Although it would nice if Hernan's name was pronounced properly

Sincere thanks and best birthday wishes from down under... [ms] has been - and continues to be - responsible for exposing huge quantities of the highest quality underground music and discussions to an appreciative audience of dedicated punters. It is a milestone others can only dream of, and I thank the whole group for their contribution.

                              Here's to another 10! :-)
