The Motor City has been declared dead more times than Rasputin. But over the last few years, while The News Media (and Dutch tourists) were hemming and hawing over a few neglected streets that had started to look more like meadows, a bunch of creative badasses were quietly buying abandoned 9-story buildings, filling them with everyone they knew, and making Detroit actually pretty incredible. Johnny Knoxville paid a visit to the D to explore for himself.

Re: Detroit Lives – Johnny Knoxville explores the new D
Saw this a while back, I think I posted in in the Movies section, but can't find it either way good find. The unemployment rate is nuts in detroit.. and that show "Hardcore Pawn" is pretty despicable imho.

Re: Detroit Lives – Johnny Knoxville explores the new D
My sister is involved in some of this stuff. She goes down there and teaches kids about urban farming and what not. A lot of the kids that I grew up with in the burbs of detroit are moving downtown, and not just the hipsters either. It's never too late to become the person you always thought you would be.Comment

Don't get me wrong DEMF is great. But if you go a couple streets in the wrong direction you end up in Congo Africa
And yes I do go there oftenComment

Re: Detroit Lives – Johnny Knoxville explores the new D
Well the entire place isn't crappy. Just about but.. I go to Tigers games a lot. Nemo's before. Harbor house. Lions Games. Cheli's Chili Bar. But you don't want to wander off a wrong street. I swear to you it is something out of a movie. It honestly feels like you have entered Congo Africa. Just Poor whites and blacks walking down the middle of the street with no shoes. Grass up to your waist. Kids playing basketball with no shoes in their boxers at a school that is abandoned.
Real Shit you knowComment

kids playing basketball with no shoes wearing only boxers at an old abandoned school? damn
One would certainly be skeptical of America if that were the boarding town to their country...
Do you go to California or NYC or FL much?
pretty good documentation on more ghetto from detroit... a decent watch if you can handle the camera operator's shaky skills

Re: Detroit Lives – Johnny Knoxville explores the new D
I used to go to Florida every year with my family until I was 19. I have been to Cali as well. My fav is NYC though. What a Gem that place is. It really is the center of the universe.
That video is right about the people walking around aimlessly. You can see it in their eyes that they have nothing to do and know where to be. It is sad. I don't hate Detroit. I just hate what happened to Detroit. When I was 6-10 years old we used to go over there all the time and it wasn't bad. But the last 20 years have been nothing but a steep drop to the bottom.

Re: Detroit Lives – Johnny Knoxville explores the new D
re: detroit. I've always enjoyed my time in Detroit. Granted, i've only ever been there for the 5 years we went to DEMF, so that's probably not a good judgement of it...or maybe it is, because we were witness to some amazing music that came out of that city.
Go to any of the detroit real estate websites and look at property. You can buy some baller houses on the cheap! Downside is you actually have to live there tho.Comment
