Re: What's a dub mix?
Taking away the vocal creates an instrumental, not a dub. The dub is the use of the vocal or elements of it or elements derived from it (or it's processed version) to create something in place of the vocal and fill out the "space"
Teh style of "dub" comes from dub reggae of course and harks back to the times when studios were pretty simple affairs, a mixer and an echo box being most of what was avaiable so became most of what those original lions of the style used to experiment and create and often make something pretty far out (for it's time) in comparison to what the original material sounded like.
(over - dubbing)
Edit ; just read previous comments.
Of course the genre of dub and the process of creating a dub version are related, massively so. One is derived directly from the other. Studio fx and pro tools may have replaced the old school tape echo but what you are doing in principle is exactly the same.

also not to be confused with "dubs" although perhaps also related?
It was fun while it lasted...Comment

Re: What's a dub mix?
valid points through out!.. when I used to purchase tracks everyday I would always look for the "dub" versions.. I looked at it (from the original) as a "muffled" version. Some original tracks were a bit cheesy, too poppy for my liking.. the dub mix (if one was available) would usually make it better. Muffled darker version I would say.. some dub mixes tho, were almost an entirely different track!Comment
