    ARTIST BIOS

Delano Smith (Mixmode, Third Ear, Sushitech) | Detroit

Born in Chicago and raised on Detroit's West side, Delano Smith represents one of the last of a rare group of Detroit’s first house DJs. Perhaps it was the juvenile absorption of the sights and sounds around him during his first 5 years in the Windy City coupled with his experience during the new DJ craze of his high school years in Detroit that influenced Delano the most or maybe it is simply that enigmatic link between music people in Chicago and Detroit, known to insiders as the I94 Connection. Regardless of the reason for his natural ear for the deep and groovy, Delano can lay claim to a legacy that most Detroit jocks cannot. When performing outside of his native city, Delano's unique sets highlight the fact that his skills were forged in an era before the rigid lines of house and techno genres appeared.

His attention to programming sets that are kinetic, emotional and educational are met with a delivery of the highest class. Having been one of the original young guns personally mentored by Motown’s 1st DJ, Ken Collier, he displays skills entirely unique to this group. Having cut his teeth in a time when an aspiring DJ had to live off his wits to make the cut, his dynamic skill set has made him the real Detroit head's secret favorite. Smith's extended hiatus later in his DJ years was ended spectacularly when the Detroit Beatdown project again highlighted his talent. Teamed with Mike ‘Agent X' Clark and Norm Talley, the crew began to spread the word of Detroit to fresh audiences, in demand globally and touching down at renowned clubs such as London's Fabric en route.

On the production front, Delano stands head and shoulders above the rest in crafting alluring, forward thinking and highly danceable grooves. His productions on Third Ear, Sushitech and Still Music have taken up crate spaces with jocks looking to add the perfect blend of soul and energy to their sets. With his own imprint Mixmode debuting in 2003, it continues to release selectively soulful dance floor gems. Both behind the decks and in the studio, Delano's genre boundary defying vision of working a floor is a direct link to the beginnings of the DJ in Detroit, maintaining his integrity today, his hunger shows little sign of abating

Safeword (Poker Flat, Dessous, Bad Animal, Paso Music)

Safeword is the result of a decade-long friendship and a mutual love for music between San Francisco's Clint Stewart and Marc Smith. The duo has worked side by side on music for years, so the eventual pairing was inevitable. Although the two share a great deal of the same musical interests, its the differences that make it. Both Stewart and Smith bring an individual perspective to the studio, creating an incredibly diverse dynamic ranging from deep lush house to the heavier side of techno and all things in between.
With their foundation laid in thick, heavy drums, lush melodies and hypnotic atmospherics, Safewords every cut, as well as their DJ and live set, is a pulsating, cerebral campaign, track-by-track leaving indelible marks on its listeners. Its the delicate interplay of pleasurable highs and dynamic lows that set this pair into their own realm of creation.
With their most recent EP on Dessous getting high praises and a forthcoming single on Poker Flat's 'Gunslingers and Greenhorns' various artist compilation, as well as the second EP on Alland Byallo's much anticipated new label, Bad Animal, the duo are primed to start their assault on dancefloors worldwide. Don't forget the Safeword.

Rich Korach (As You Like it)

Rich Korach discovered underground electronic music in 1994, finally encountering the sound that would transform the rest of his life. Growing up just north of Detroit, Rich witnessed performances from some of the early pioneers of techno. Shortly after immersing himself in the underground warehouse scene in Detroit, he became an active DJ himself. The next decade included such highlights as: being a resident DJ for Detroit’s legendary production company, Paxahau, playing gigs at: the Detroit Electronic Music Festival (2005 and 200, Space – Ibiza, Weekend Club – Berlin, and all across the U.S. Rich even had an impromptu tag session with one of his musical heroes of the time, Richie Hawtin, in 2005.

In late 2008, Rich moved to San Francisco to thwart the cold and live in one of the most diverse and beautiful cities in America. Since then, his performances in the Bay Area underground have caused quite the stir, resulting in a residency with promotions powerhouse As You Like It (AYLI) and a steadily increasing demand for performances. In 2011 he played alongside a wealth of artists including Tiger and Woods, Deniz Kurtel, Iron Curtis, Matthias Tanzmann, Benoit & Sergio, Dave Aju, Mike Huckaby, Nicolas Jaar, and Lee Curtiss. To say Rich Korach’s sound is an instant classic is understood to those who’ve become converts to his shows. His is an insatiable appetite for the unexpected, which makes watching his next move upward and onward such a joy.

Mossmoss (As You Like It, Racecar)

Mossmoss (aka Mattie Bowen) is a Scottish born dj and producer with an intense passion for deep dance music. His love for music and desire to live a joyful and productive life fuels his passion for art and creativity. An artist by nature and a listener by choice, his wandering sets often paint landscapes of light and dark patterns, textures, and melancholy melody. Heavily influenced by a long stint in the Mid West in proximity to Detroit and Chicago, he brings that influence to the Bay Area and draws on The City and its colorful nightlife for constant immersive inspiration.

Mossmoss has the power to steal the mental attributes of his adversaries and use it against them. He likewise is able to make duplicates of himself, but using this power draws a lot of attention. mossmoss has learned to absorb the damage from mental attacks and use it to amplify his strength and he developed the talent to view distant locations with his mind. Lamentably, mossmoss becomes unlucky in the presence of fire.

Mossmoss was the first As You Like It resident. His range can be credited with the shape of most line-ups. You can catch him opening the night, closing the night, peak-hour, and off-peak. Basically, Mossmoss makes it happen.

    Tyrel Williams (Housepitality, Acid Test)

Tyrel has been a mainstay of Chicago’s underground House scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records where he spent the last decade building a mighty collection of 12” dance records. He spent 2009-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which is an ongoing all vinyl House / Techno weekly dedicated to the true art form of DJing. Guests have included Miles Maeda, IZ and DIZ, Derrick Carter, Tevo Howard, Traxx, and Justin Long. Tyrel has recently moved to San Francisco to take his DJing and Production to the next level.
