Re: Olympic Games
I watched that race live, it was very exciting. Apparently Chad is a huge fan of Phelps studying his swimming videos in 5 different languages over and over. It was cool of Phelps to congratulate him after the race when they were walking away I thought. His Dad, clearly very proud as he should be made me think of Nick when I saw him .

Re: Olympic Games
I've been glued to these games. So much fun to watch. Loved watching the gymnastics, swimming, diving, volleyball (in and out). I want to pick one i've liked more than the other, but they've all been really compelling to watch. Nathan Adrian beating out Magnussen by 1/100th of a second for 100 meter freestyle gold was flippin awesome!!
Looking fwd to track and field medal games starting.Comment

Re: Olympic Games
It's predicted that America is going to end up with the most gold medals (and medals overall) this year. Like Jenks, I've been glued to the Olympics as well. What with the sluggish economy is sure is nice to turn on the TV and celebrate our countries athletic prowess on an International scale.

Re: Olympic Games
Curious to know what everyones opinions are on the double amputee from South Africa? On one hand I think it's inspiring and amazing in every way. On the other hand I wonder if the other runners see it as unfair? A friend of mine who's competed against the best runners in the world when he was in college (such as Michael Johnson) see's it as unfair. Here are his thoughts:
/Discuss
There's no good answer to the question. I respect and am thoroughly impressed with what he is doing. To say something against that almost makes me seem like an ass. However, truth to tell, I think that he has an unfair advantage. For a track athlete, foot, ankle, Achilles and calf injuries and fatigue are prevalent. I feel for him because a guy without legs would love to have a temporary foot injury. But the fact that he never has to deal with those potential injuries and the fatigue that occurs from the training and nature of the race, gives him an advantage. Another thing to consider is the fact that as an abled body runner begins to fatigue during the last 50 meters of the race, he tend to run on his heals or flat footed which doesn't allow for the maximum of running on his toes. This guys prosthetic is designed to always keep him on his toes, thus giving him an advantage. Another question is, how is the prosthetic designed from a tension standpoint? Does the bounce give him an unfair advantage?
I love his story and I really loved that he was raised by people to who encouraged him to dream the undreamable. I mean, who is born with no legs below the knee and even considers being a sprinter?? I think he does have an advantage though. Imagine a pitcher in baseball with a prosthetic elbow. No fatigue in that joint would be a huge advantage. Think about Casey Martin the golfer. They didn't want him to play on the PGA tour because he had to use a cart.

Interesting... There is no way to actually make a scientific fact about it? i think that if there is some kind of advantage, the olympic committee already should know before he is allowed to participate?

Re: Olympic Games
It is a little unfair, going off the points made from the quote above. But as also mentioned I give it to him for his abilities and preservation to get back up. But you got to remember all his times and qualifications are held under the T44 athletic paralympic classifications, suppose he was just too fast for it.

Re: Olympic Games
This was my response to my friend earlier today:
When I first heard about the runners participation I thought it was great. When I saw him run alone I thought it was amazing. When I saw him get 2nd place last night it seemed a bit unfair. If he would have come in last I'm not sure if I would see it the same way or not. When I saw him come in second place in his heat or prelim or whatever it's called, I was pretty blown away, and confused because I had never seen that before. Usually amputees or "physically challenged" athletes compete together I thought because they simply can't compete on the same level as normal athletes.
I like your analogy with the pitcher though. I pitched for several years growing up and I absolutely think that would be unfair. But then again pitching has a lot to do with accuracy. But from what you are explaining, running has a lot do with accuracy too, regarding how the runners foot hits the ground. And tendons and things.
The more I think about it though, the more I feel like running without legs from the knee down at that speed in particular would be incredibly difficult. This runner has happened to perfect it because it's all he's known.
I guess it's a tough question to answer because we will never know what it's like to run with prosthetics. And he is sort of an anomaly because he's been training his whole life that way.

Re: Olympic Games
This guy is amazing
Oscar's bad run last night just showed how good you can be in the prelims and be totally wiped by good semi final competition.

Re: Olympic Games
Gatlin looks pretty strong as well... i think he's posted the lowest time so far, not that that says a lot about what'll happen in the finals. i kinda liked gatlin until i saw his interview after last night's semi win.. "me me me me... the crowd was cheering for me"
as far as the double amputee... it is hard not to give the guy credit for accomplishing something amazing, but i do think he may have an unfair advantage. i'll leave it up to someone else to determine if he really does or not (here's lookin' at you scientists!). john, your friend's points fall in sync with the same things i was thinking. as in human nature though, i am happy to see this guy succeed, advantage or not.Should I fuck you at that not until the ass, inject then tremendously hard bumschen and to the termination in the eyes yes?Comment
