I didn't see that coming ! During the memorable Euro tours of the late 50s - early 60s, influenced by Eric Dolphy, he began questioning the track format and the conventional ways of composing.

yeah, those Vanguard discs with Dolphy and coltrane's quartet are great. I went through a few years when all I listened to was Coltrane. Now I've gotta be in a special mood to listen to his stuff.
