Released last year on Anjunadeep, Dusky's brilliantly diverse "Stick By This" album put them on the map as one of the most exciting outfits around. Described as "a beautiful album - one of the albums of the year" by Pete Tong, the LP gained BBC Radio 1 support from Rob Da Bank, Toddla T and Tong himself, as well earning rave reviews in DJ Magazine and on Resident Advisor.
Having since further cemented their position on the deep house scene, with EPs like "Henry 85" on Will Saul's Simple and the huge "Flo Jam" EP on Dogmatik, Dusky's album now comes under fresh focus thanks to a series of remixes.
On the first of two special remix EPs, this house and deep techno focused collection takes in reworks from jozif (Crosstown Rebels/Culprit), Chicago's Tevo Howard and Berlin's Andre Crom (OFF Recordings).
Taking on the soulful "It's Not Enough" feat. Janai, the fast rising jozif delivers a slow-burning, bittersweet deep house groove full of musical depth and texture - available in both Voxatron and Dubatron form. A cult legend in underground circles, Chicago's Tevo Howard twists out a raw analogue and true school electro reshape of the lush deep house classic "Lost Highway".
Fresh from recent EPs on Freerange, Exploited and his own OFF Recordings label, Berlin's Andre Crom smooths out the classic "Lost In You" (feat. Janai) into a hypnotic twilight house groove. Rounding things off, fast-rising Polish producer Thomas Langner brings an infectious, clubby deep house groove to "Falling".

Recruiting the feminine touches of Maya Jane Coles, Miss Kittin and tINI, this diverse release oozes with the sexiness that only a dream team like this could deliver.
Since 2010, Maya Jane Coles has bust onto the scene seemingly from nowhere, dazzling the world with her DJ and production skills and establishing herself as a queen of nu-school house. 'Getting Freaky' is no exception; Maya proves herself once again, delivering deep beats and a trademark melodic groove, spread over innovative synth sounds and a sexy vocal.
With roots deep in the underground 90's techno scene, audiences have felt Miss Kittin's musical impact for nearly 20 years and her classic touch is felt on 'Girlz' with heavy percussion and deep bass conquering the field. Jacking grooves and hi-techno synth lines recall feelings of 90's raves, whilst her own timeless vocals recall everything you know and love about Miss Kittin.
tINI's remix of 'Girlz' cleverly smooths things out a bit whilst still retaining the energy of the original. With a stripped back, experimental, dub-techno vibe to it, this one sounds like its been sent from the underground of outer-space. Heidi calls on the services of three very talented ladies and as one would expect delivers the quality and diversity she has become renowned for over the years. 03. Luca C & Brigante feat. Robert Owens: Tomorrow Can Wait (Art Department Remix) [Southern Fried Records | ECB332]
At first listen and I thought the original cut was an instant classic. Owens Teacher voice always helps, but is that the production is exquisite. Luca C & Brigante are two Italians who are in a great. Without going any further Luca C is a component of Infinity Ink, training has produced the hit "Infinity". On the remix we have Art Department, which give a more relaxed if possible, of elastic bassline, but that does not exceed the majesty of the original cut.

Finally making an appearance on the imprint helmed by Maceo Plex is alter ego Maetrik with the Unleash The Beast EP. A subtle shift in style for Ellum Audio, the undisputed modern master of seductive, brooding bass-lines and compulsive killer tunes imparts his tougher credentials without forgoing the sensual touch.
First sampled in classic early 90s record Poem by Bobby Konders, the words of Reggae poet Mutaburuka have surfaced again as a dominant feature in a-side 'The Poem' a slice of deep tech bubbling with heat, richly dark atmosphere, and syncopated drums. Having long resonated with Eric Estornel aka Maetrik/Maceo Plex, the producer has utilized the original verse from a def-poetry jam video creating a bona fide bomb in the process with a nod to the classic era of house.
Next up, Maceo Plex gets Revenge with his Walk Alone remix combining his own well-renowned vocal flair with a cascade of synth melodies and stabs of wonky bass driven by slick beats and the ever-marauding bass-line.
The toughest and techiest cut on the EP comes with closer 'To The Top', showcasing a raw and dirty warehouse vibe with a growling low-end, wonky bass synths and flecks of acid. Over a decade after the first Maetrik release on Immigrant Records back in 2000, its safe to say that Eric Estornel aka Maceo Plex has the industry at his feet. A powerful force in electronic music with a deeply distinctive sound, Eric's mega following is in the grip of his devastatingly addictive and beautifully engineered dance-floor assaults. A first for Ellum Audio, Maetriks Unleash The Beast EP may well take this remarkable artist to even headier heights.

By all accounts, 2011 was a good year for multi-aliased producer Eric Estornel. Working under his Maceo Plex moniker, he pumped out five singles and an LP, and, in the process, established his status as a serious producer of slick vocal tech-house. However, his wholesale adoption of the Maceo Plex identity came at the expense of a slowed-down release schedule for Maetrik, his older and more "proper" tech-house guise. In 2012, Estornel has attempted to make up for that slack by dropping The Entity EP in January, and now, Unleash the Beast, the first Maetrik release to find its way to his Ellum Audio imprint.
Much like The Entity before it, Unleash the Beast feels like a project of consolidation. Whereas in years past the Maetrik and Maceo Plex monikers could be almost lazily divided into either more techno or house-leaning projects, the new EP combines aspects of the two to arrive at a tastefully done hybrid of both that leans toward the latter.
For instance, "The Poem," the EP's big-room a-side, is a tightly controlled roller coaster that plays with the energy expectations of a large dancefloor. A sticky, bongo-accompanied four-to-the-floor pulls down nervous sampled pads seasoned with waves of unintelligible chanting. An infectious bassline—a Maceo Plex calling card—ties the mix together in time to make space for a resampling of "Dis Poem," Mutaburuka's fierce invocation first canonized by Bobby Konders' house classic "The Poem." What starts as tracky tech-house becomes a creative homage in the best sense—it's referential without being derivative.
The convergence between the two identities continues with the pop tech-house of "Walk Alone (Maceo Plex Revenge)." Estornel himself takes center stage, playing with the titular statement through characteristically club-ready and cool, Maceo Plex-like vocal riffs. In truth, it might as well be a Maceo Plex tune, the only thing hinting towards Maetrik being the song's punctuating blasts of synthesized fog horn.
Of all the tracks on the EP, "To The Top" is the most Maetrik-like. Sounding like a direct sequel to The Entity b-side "Asteroid Funk," that song's deep-voiced character is reprised, this time accompanied by a coil of angular hits wrapped around the EP's toughest sound palette. However, it's still less dissonant and more accessible than its predecessor. Gone is the abrasive metal-on-metal techno undercurrent, replaced instead by a more dubby atmosphere with house drums fused to deadstock '80s-electro cowbell.
Unleash The Beast might then mark a new direction for Estornel. Like some advanced stage of multiple-personality disorder, it seems as though his alter-egos have begun collaborating with one another. So far, that's meant a move towards Maceo Plex-like club tunes, resulting here in three tracks that could each become as anthems in their own right.

07. Pig & Dan - Insomnia (Carlo Lio Remix) (Decade Remixes Part 1) [Soma Quality Recordings | SOMA 342D]
The first of a two part remix series from Pig & Dan's 'Decade' sees Carlo Lio, Popof, Steve Parker & Justin Berkovi turn in fantastic interpretations
Carlo Lio’s remix of Pig and Dan’s Insomnia is a great expression of the style of the Toronto DJ and producer. Key elements of the original are neatly threaded through the track and deepen Lio’s mesmerising production. Initially the atmospheric elements reinforce the consuming rhythm patterns of the track before the energetic bassline booms into life after the drops. There is that hypnotic, immersive quality to the track synonymous with Lio which sees the crystal clear elements burst through from the wallowing low frequencies to make this a dynamic and engaging remix.
POPOF also takes on Insomnia in his own remix of the track which showcases the current direction of the ex -free party master. The track hints towards electro with the bouncing dominant bass careering through the tech house backdrop. The French DJ uses the vocal lines and percussion hits of the original in a subtly different way to that expressed by Carlo Lio with the vocals slightly sped up and traces of distortion giving a different feel to the remix. Hand-picked to create the track by Pig and Dan, POPOF doesn’t fail to disappoint in providing an energetic and intricate reworking.
Portugal’s Steve Parker takes on Lone Ranger and impresses his own brand of tech house on the track. Having forged a notable position in Portugal, the DJ has seen support from the likes of Richie Hawtin, Josh Wink and now Pig and Dan take him to the next level. This track builds and builds with the circling rhythms and emerging bass creating a great balance. Early on in the track the crash symbol presence gives an interesting and forceful new dimension. Towards the end slightly darker, industrial elements filter in and ensure that this remix provides great diversity and strong identity throughout.
The final remix comes from stalwart Justin Berkovi who delivers a thoroughly deep techno rework of ‘Keep It Coming’. Subtle stabs permeate through the track, resonating every so often with splashes of white noise that wash through the track. Ride & crash cymbals bolster the simple yet effective percussion giving this remix a raw, jacking, old school feel.

08. SIS - Faces [Crosstown Rebels | CRM099]
An aficionado’s household name ever since riding a well-deserved wave of hype in 2008, Burak Sar aka SIS has continued to impress with his instantly recognizable percussive grooves and unmistakable production style. Stepping up for the 99th release on Crosstown Rebels (having previously appeared on the first ever RebelLION) the German producer delivers ambitious four-tracker - the ‘Round Pen EP’.
Shakers and bongos open things up on ‘Faces’, before a big, unwavering 4/4 kick enters the floor coupled with a hazy bassline. An evocative sample is used creatively in trademark SIS style and will no doubt have the same devastating effect on the floor. Things then get a little darker with a minimal, almost micro house intro on ‘Unforty’. Spacey pads and a menacing bassline lead the way hypnotically until an organ synth line snaps us out of the trance, giving the track a new perspective.
We then dive straight back into some more vocal-led, peak time madness on ‘Miles From Me’. SIS displays his renowned propensity for manipulated vocals, chopping up a blues sample beyond recognition and then releasing the full vocal later on; whist a gratifying combo of warming distortion, elongated reverb tails and echoed stabs ensures that sounds twist and turn for the duration. Finally we return to the deep for ‘Forward Line’, a driving and relentless piece characterised by a slick percussive groove and hypnotic synth lead.
Heavily championed by Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano, SIS’s productions are going from strength to strength. This superb new EP on Crosstown is destined for some white island dance-floor madness this summer and will further cement SIS’s outstanding reputation.
09. The Junkies - Funk You [Tronic Music | TR088]
The Junkies hook us up with a two-fold fix, and it's a subliminal ride through low end warfare and stomping drums. Starting off with "Give It All", the stripped down approach lets the locomotive groove stand out and a commanding vocal bends everything in to submission.On "Funk You", crunchy percussion takes the front seat, aided by a trademarked hi hat. Streamlined effects pave the way for distressed synths, and the sub bass holds it all together.

07. Pig & Dan - Insomnia (Carlo Lio Remix) (Decade Remixes Part 1) [Soma Quality Recordings | SOMA 342D]
The first of a two part remix series from Pig & Dan's 'Decade' sees Carlo Lio, Popof, Steve Parker & Justin Berkovi turn in fantastic interpretations
Carlo Lio’s remix of Pig and Dan’s Insomnia is a great expression of the style of the Toronto DJ and producer. Key elements of the original are neatly threaded through the track and deepen Lio’s mesmerising production. Initially the atmospheric elements reinforce the consuming rhythm patterns of the track before the energetic bassline booms into life after the drops. There is that hypnotic, immersive quality to the track synonymous with Lio which sees the crystal clear elements burst through from the wallowing low frequencies to make this a dynamic and engaging remix.
POPOF also takes on Insomnia in his own remix of the track which showcases the current direction of the ex -free party master. The track hints towards electro with the bouncing dominant bass careering through the tech house backdrop. The French DJ uses the vocal lines and percussion hits of the original in a subtly different way to that expressed by Carlo Lio with the vocals slightly sped up and traces of distortion giving a different feel to the remix. Hand-picked to create the track by Pig and Dan, POPOF doesn’t fail to disappoint in providing an energetic and intricate reworking.
Portugal’s Steve Parker takes on Lone Ranger and impresses his own brand of tech house on the track. Having forged a notable position in Portugal, the DJ has seen support from the likes of Richie Hawtin, Josh Wink and now Pig and Dan take him to the next level. This track builds and builds with the circling rhythms and emerging bass creating a great balance. Early on in the track the crash symbol presence gives an interesting and forceful new dimension. Towards the end slightly darker, industrial elements filter in and ensure that this remix provides great diversity and strong identity throughout.
The final remix comes from stalwart Justin Berkovi who delivers a thoroughly deep techno rework of ‘Keep It Coming’. Subtle stabs permeate through the track, resonating every so often with splashes of white noise that wash through the track. Ride & crash cymbals bolster the simple yet effective percussion giving this remix a raw, jacking, old school feel.

08. SIS - Faces [Crosstown Rebels | CRM099]
An aficionado’s household name ever since riding a well-deserved wave of hype in 2008, Burak Sar aka SIS has continued to impress with his instantly recognizable percussive grooves and unmistakable production style. Stepping up for the 99th release on Crosstown Rebels (having previously appeared on the first ever RebelLION) the German producer delivers ambitious four-tracker - the ‘Round Pen EP’.
Shakers and bongos open things up on ‘Faces’, before a big, unwavering 4/4 kick enters the floor coupled with a hazy bassline. An evocative sample is used creatively in trademark SIS style and will no doubt have the same devastating effect on the floor. Things then get a little darker with a minimal, almost micro house intro on ‘Unforty’. Spacey pads and a menacing bassline lead the way hypnotically until an organ synth line snaps us out of the trance, giving the track a new perspective.
We then dive straight back into some more vocal-led, peak time madness on ‘Miles From Me’. SIS displays his renowned propensity for manipulated vocals, chopping up a blues sample beyond recognition and then releasing the full vocal later on; whist a gratifying combo of warming distortion, elongated reverb tails and echoed stabs ensures that sounds twist and turn for the duration. Finally we return to the deep for ‘Forward Line’, a driving and relentless piece characterised by a slick percussive groove and hypnotic synth lead.
Heavily championed by Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano, SIS’s productions are going from strength to strength. This superb new EP on Crosstown is destined for some white island dance-floor madness this summer and will further cement SIS’s outstanding reputation.
09. The Junkies - Funk You [Tronic Music | TR088]
The Junkies hook us up with a two-fold fix, and it's a subliminal ride through low end warfare and stomping drums. Starting off with "Give It All", the stripped down approach lets the locomotive groove stand out and a commanding vocal bends everything in to submission.On "Funk You", crunchy percussion takes the front seat, aided by a trademarked hi hat. Streamlined effects pave the way for distressed synths, and the sub bass holds it all together.
