I find it really difficult to get into guy j's music... Is over-produced and lacks any melody in my view!

I found it a bit on the monotonous side myself.

You are dead on about that (glad somebody finally said it). Since he's a darling of Digweed, he gets a free pass, and as a result even his urine is like a stream of liquid gold.

His unnecessary 12-minute thumpathon remixes of prog gems from the past (the latest being Gill Norris' "Forme") are also getting mighty old.

I like a fair few of his productions but mostly they are just chinstroking 4-to-the-floor grinders with plenty of atmosphere but not much direction or variety.

DJ-ing wise, I can't think of much that separates him from the pack.

Think he concentrates too much on building these atmospheric soundscapes (he does do that well) whilst forgetting to introduce change in rhythms or melody that make some music interesting to listen to. If you skim quickly through this mix you will probably realise theres v little going on

Guy J is one of a very few dj's who created their own dj style which is actually recognizable (think of Sasha), might want to check more of his sets from the past. You don't need to like his productions or remixes that all comes down to a personal taste. But dj-wise, he is very unique.

You're right, I haven't heard much in the realm of his DJ sets (I mostly let the tracklists do the speaking), and I'll dig up a few more before adding any further commentary.

Try this though with this mix...skim through quickly 5-10 min gaps....i challenge you to see any big changes through the mix! A rare chord change maybe but thats as good as it gets. Think he's very good at creating a soundscape - when I first heard a mix of his I thought this would be my kind of music, but the lack of anything really going on killed that. As for a unique sound, I have heard many Sasha mixes from the last 20 years that have a similar sound, but that were a lot more interesting...ok, ill bow out now - said my bit!

julesee, i am not comparing Guy J to Sasha, just saying his mixing is recognizable even if you don't know who's playing and that's pretty rare nowadays, don't you think. You don't need to explain yourself why you didn't like the set, every man to his taste. Although i would say that certain 'flatness' is necessary when warming up.

I don't think Sasha sounded similar to Guy J during any period of his career.
