01. Stelios Vassiloudis – Small Hours (Jim Rivers Remix) [Bedrock Records | BEDSVRMX1]
From ambient soundscapes, downtempo vocal tracks and slo-mo house, through to deliciously deep house, tech-house and acid grooves, “It Is What It Is”, the supremely exciting double-disc debut artist album from Stelios Vassiloudis, was released on Bedrock at the tail end of last year. Now, at the height of summer 2012 comes the first of a series of superb album remix packages featuring interpretations from some of the most exciting producers from around the world, fittingly titled “It Was What It Was”.
Jim Rivers is a British innovator, always moving forward in the ever-evolving world of electronic music, crossing the many bridges between house and techno with relaxed dignity. Here he blends techno and acid elements with immense skill, creating a worthy, anthemic interpretation of the deeply delicious original version of “Small Hours”.
Stelios teamed up with like-minded producer, Berlin based Sasse, for one of his album highlights, “The Z”, so remixing such a superb original track would always be a tricky task. São Paulo’s rising global star, Wehbba has stepped up to the plate and created a percussive hook-laden melodic beauty in his inimitable South American style, that is bound to impress.
The album is also rich with the many vocal talents it hosts, with one of the most glorious contributions coming from Astrid Suryanto on “Walk Away”. So, who better than USA’s Ryan Cavanagh (aka Slow Hands) to create this sunshine filled mellow interpretation? As one of the main proponents of the current slow-mo and sultry house revolution, his creations bear all the hallmarks of years of classical and compositional training. Aiming to elevate electronic music to wholly new and rewarding creative planes with his approach to creating songs, not tracks, Slow Hands is about emotion, about warmth, about creative freedom. His interpretation of “Walk Away” is sure to leave you with smile on your face and a glow in your heart.

02. Pig & Dan – Emotions [Bedrock Digital | Beddigi-24]
08. Pig & Dan – Let The Show Begin [Bedrock Digital | Beddigi-24]
If you’re talking about exciting underground producers, two of the first names out of anyone’s hat should always be Igor Tchkotoua and Dan Duncan (aka Pig & Dan), whose distinctive mixture of influences has given them a sound that is both innovative and easily recognizable, since they first joined forces back in 1999. Right now, it seems like there’s a non-stop flow of success in the air around these two musical madmen. Their last Bedrock release (“Machines”) in April 2012 was a Beatport Top 5 smash and now “Emotions”/”Let The Show Begin” raises the bar even higher.
From the twisted vocalized intro to the deep, deep bass and subtle synth hooks and drops, “Emotions” is, quite simply, a soulful electronic masterpiece. Whilst “Let The Show Begin”, with its quirky nod to Mr. Mojo Risin’, displays a more direct and intense percussive edge to the powerhouse Pig & Dan arsenal.
Once again, it’s hats off to Bedrock for raising the bar even higher with each release. In this day and age to not only survive as an independent label, but also to flourish and constantly evolve by introducing new talent and pushing established artists to their creative best, is something that should be applauded.

03. Julian Jeweil – Zoulou (Bastard EP) [Plus 8 Records Ltd. | PLUS8128]
Returning to Plus 8 for the third time, Julian Jeweil’sprofile as a contemporary techno titan has continued to grow. The Frenchman is now a firm part of the family and, when not in the studio, can be found owning dancefloors across Europe and beyond, putting to good use the experience he has built up over the last ten years since first emerging.
The EP opens with the titular track, ‘Bastard’ – a rolling, cyclical techno groove with slapping drums and dark, heavily filtered vocal loop. Tension comes from layered, skewed synths that grow louder and louder til breaking down into white noise waves that flood the rest of the mix.
‘Hey You’ has just as firm and rubbery a bottom end, but here the iron-like synths bring a little funk as tiny FX percolate right at the heart of the track. Wholly abstract as ever, all sorts of other aqueous sounds drip in and out, conjuring thoughts of long dark tunnels disappearing deep underground.
On ‘The Gang’ Jeweil lays down a restless, paranoid arrangement that sounds infected by alien space ships as an ominous vocal beams down from above. One synthhere triggers another one there, making sure the whole thing is dynamic and filmic in its make-up.
Closing out the EP is ‘ZouLou’, another steely techno stomper over run by alien sounds and non-human noises. Though his techno surely makes you dance, Julian Jeweilalso knows how to get the most of his studio equipment and colours his tracks with more than enough detail to keep your mind as active as your feet.

07. Tomy DeClerque – Z-Nasti [Phobiq | PHOBIQ058]
Tomy DeClerque hammers it down with two tracks on Phobiq, unleashing some goods from the dark side. "It's Up To You" boasts a steamrolling rhythm section upon which subtle stabs and persistent hats lead the way. Followed closely by Sam Paganini's version of "Z-Nasti", we are treated to a more subliminal rendition, complete with shadowy effects and dubby sensibilities. The original mix of "Z-Nasti" makes strong use of ghostly chords while sonars fire away over tightly programmed drums. Things close up with Axel Karakasis' remix of "It's Up To You" where he has transformed it into a percussion-led affair, made even more sinister with creepy sub bass.
09. Agoria – Panta Rei (Max Cooper Remix) [InFiné Music | iF32628]
As a part of its Infiné Exclusive summer compilation, European label Infiné has offered this Max Cooper remix of Agoria’s "Panta Rei". The track is an ambling journey of ascending arpeggiated synths with an undeniable groove and infectious energy imbued by the production's hypnotic repetition. The tight synths pair with reverb-addled claps and a 4/4 kick pattern as the descending bassline helps keep the song well-balanced and structurally sound. The gradually rising "aaah"s and "oooh"s float atop Max Cooper's mix, and characterize the airy nature of his song. Infiné Exclusive—which also contains remixes from Ben Klock, Sasha and dOP, among others - is out today, and you can stream the whole thing after the jump.
