its 8.2 on the richter but some sites report it as 8.5 .. felt tremors here but no news on any damages or tsunami anywhere which is good

Tsunami warning issued to Thailand, Japan, Sri Lanka

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia -- Tsunami warnings have been issued in three countries following an 8.2 magnitude quake off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Thailand, Japan and Sri Lanka have all put out warnings.

Authorities say it could take several hours to determine if the quake has generated a devastating tsunami.

And police are evacuating many residents from low-lying coastal areas in Malaysia's northern states of Penang and Kedah as a precaution.

An official with the U.S. Geological Survey is describing the tremor as an aftershock of the devastating December 26th quake, which triggered the Asian tsunami disaster.

Residents of Banda Aceh in Sumatra, the city hardest hit by the December disaster, have fled their homes in panic following the latest quake.

One official in Sumatra says the quake was felt in most cities on the island.
