Poker Flat Recordings drop more summer-defining grooves via the talented Italian new-comer Nico Lahs. Already building a formidable reputation for both his exquisitely produced tracks and his party animal exploits, Nico brings more heat for the clued-up dancefloor with the 'My Side EP'.
Kicking off with the epically deep 'My Side', Nico drops some blissful, twisted, narcotic business - destined for big systems, preferably in the open air. The funky bass line twitches like it’s been awake way too long, while the whispered vocals ask “how far will you go?” – Nico’s answer is clearly a very long way.
Berlin’s Daniel Dexter provides a slightly tougher rework of the same track, dubbing out some section before smashing home the kick drum once more with devastating effect.
'Symptoms' keeps the vibe going with nicely modulating synths, dub effects and chiming pads. Walking a fine line between tough funk and melancholic deepness is becoming a trademark move for Nico.
'Suddenly Gone' sees Nico go a shade darker with a minimalistic late-night stormer. Pristine sounds, combined with precision and a true ear for the party.

02. Mohn - Ebertplatz 2020 (Jörg Burger Remix) (Ebertplatz Remixe / 2020 EP) [Kompakt | KOM 266]
With their highly acclaimed debut album as Mohn, Wolfgang Voigt and Jörg Burger (of Modernist fame) developed a new breed of tidal funk catering to all your tripping needs. It was definitely an epic album, but not necessarily one people would dance to. Now, the "Ebertplatz 2020 Remixe" collection unlocks the secret floor potential of one of its most accomplished tracks, bringing the bounce back to inner space travel.
In his insanely named "HardTranceAtlanticXSMix", Wolfgang Voigt basically just adds a bassdrum to an already sublime original, but those familiar with his work know very well that it's never "just a bassdrum": like a prodigal son, the beat returns to his home country, picking up the acoustic bread crumbs it left behind and rearranging them into a massive wall of sound that may also be used as a launching pad.
Trance truly is back, but it wouldn't be without Wolfgang Voigt giving it musical amnesty. "Ebertplatz Remixe 2020" is to be released as 12" vinyl and digital download on September 10th and also includes finely tuned versions by Jörg Burger and Terranova.
[RA Review]
Techno veterans Jörg Burger and Wolfgang Voigt have a long and significant history in dance music. But their collaboration as Mohn earlier this year—which gave us a charming debut album of thoughtful downtempo techno—will go down as one of their career highlights. It was an album for the sofa surfers, however, so here Burger and Voigt drag one of the tracks, "Ebertplatz 2020," to the dance floor.
Burger's re-rub sees him melt the elegant, frozen majesty of the original, turning it into a steamy, tech/trance shuffle replete with cosmic whooshes, juddering bass pulses and chugging, muted guitars. It's difficult to categorise Voigt's take on the track as anything but trance—albeit of the techy, progressive kind. Think late '90s/early '00s labels like Platipus for reference. Repetitive synth chords cascade down as emotive melodies swirl on top with a squelching bassline driving it along. Kompakt's own Terranova eschews the trancey approach, pointing it towards housey territory instead. It keeps the melancholic undertones of the original but fuses it with deep piano phrases and crunching percussion with steam-driven hi-hats. An intriguing package then, but one that requires a leap of faith in places.

The wealth of artists involved for Bedrock 14 is truly amazing. This 2012 label compilation captures the essence of why electronic dance music is such an exciting prospect right now by showcasing amazing underground talent, both established and new.
What a dream start to what should be a highly successful career for Eagles & Butterflies. The album opens with the beautifully mellow “Kollekt”, the first of two debut tracks (the other being the equally adventurous “Stimmer”) from this new artist. Likewise, Kurtz & Bomber, an exciting collaboration between Troy Kurtz & Panic Bomber (Richard Haig) from Miami, USA debut here with the incredibly infectious vocalized “Never Sleeping”.
John Digweed’s ability to draw together an exciting array of international talent into one cohesive whole is pretty much unparalleled. “Resistance”” by Stuttgart’s Solee, shows exactly why he crosses divides and spans genres with his distinctive take on evocative melodic techno. Spain’s Paneoh (who also appeared on “Structures 2” and “Live In Cordoba”) displays all his hyper-energetic twisted brilliance on “Vetabom”, while one of Australia’s most talented and sought after music producers, Infusion’s Jamie Stevens, makes a welcome return to Bedrock (after his exceptional remix of John Digweed’s “Warung Beach”) with “Indigo”.
Rising UK star, Liverpool’s Jemmy, is given the lush remix treatment on his hypnotic “Quarry Bank” track by Greece’s Stelios Vassiloudis, whose critically acclaimed debut album, “It Is What It Is”, showed the world that variety is indeed the spice of life. So, it’s no wonder that Stelios makes three appearances on Bedrock 14, adding his wild acidic grooved “What’s That?” to the proceedings and teaming up with Florian Kruse and Nils Nurnberg as Wiretappeur for “Iridescent”, another example of this trio’s highly original and deep understanding of the power of melody.
Bedrock’s new talent is in exceptional form throughout. Canada’s Maher Daniel teams up NYC’s Nikko Gibler for the low-slung, spiralling beauty of “I’ll Wait For You”. Maxime Dangles has grown to be a key new artist in the French avant-garde electronic music community and is creating waves around the globe with his unabashed approach to proper club techno music, so its not surprise that “Unsteady Curve” is yet another example of his amazing music. Fellow rising French star, Antoine Husson (aka Electric Rescue), brings his distinctive brand of ultra-dynamic techno and sensuality to the party with an exceptional remix of John Digweed & Nick Muir’s “Raise” and his own monster creation, “Stucked Ship”.
Israeli producer Guy J has become one of the most sophisticated and emotive producers in electronic music over the last decade, with a body of work and a sphere of influence that belies relatively short time in the spotlight. With the melody-rich and emotionally charged “Mish Mash”, he shows exactly why he is one of the most inspirational artists in the world. As are Spain’s Marc Marzenit and Henry Saiz, whose “Sirens Land” explains why their complex and emotive form of electronic club music is exciting so many people right now.
So much exceptional talent is on display on Bedrock 14 and we haven’t even mentioned Germany’s Robert Babicz, whose music career already spans two decades. The mark of a true musical innovator, he continues to reveal his talent and skill as one of Europe's most essential techno producers here with another stunning creation, “Eastside”. Then there’s another Bedrock favourite, the techno tastemaker Christian Smith with “The Judgement”, showing exactly why he has operated at the top of his game for over a decade now. The chiming keys of Marco Bailey’s “Whispering Leaves” effortlessly lift the proceedings to anthem level and Quivver (aka world-renowned DJ/producer/songwriter John Graham) never fails to impress, “Fakes and Bullshit” sending out a clear message.
If you’re talking about exciting underground producers, two of the first names out of anyone’s hat should always be Igor Tchkotoua and Dan Duncan (aka Pig & Dan) and their intense “Crazy” is surely a highlight here too. Finally, it’s fitting that John Digweed and Nick Muir, producers of the finest electronic dance music, bring the show to a close with their “Trezz Intro” interlude, since between them they have been involved in many pivotal moments in the world of club music over the years and have in many ways helped to define genres & push the boundaries further. With Bedrock 14, the label also shows that it is not resting on past laurels but always moving forward, developing in an exciting direction.
So, once again, it’s hats off to Bedrock for raising the bar even higher with this exceptional compilation featuring 21 exclusive tracks from some of the world’s finest artists. In this day and age to not only survive as an independent label, but also to flourish and constantly evolve, bringing forward new and exciting talent, is something that should be applauded. Anyone with even just a passing interest in quality electronic music needs to think very seriously before leaving this collection on the shelf.
04. Jon Rundell - Reminisce [Intec Digital | ID029]
Jon has never been a follower. Very much his own man and entirely his own artist never being swayed by trends or fashions. Preferring instead to challenge and ask questions of what’s going on around him, Jon’s output has remained unique and interesting right from the start. Experimental at times, but always matured and versatile.
After last summers Knick Knack EP reaching No1 on Beatport it was always going to be tough to follow up with another EP for Jon on Intec.
Playing around with his sound and styles of late (check the recent Screaming Sunrise EP on Etch), The Revival EP has slightly more melodic influences than previous groove based outings.
All 3 tracks still have those elements to them that Rundell has become known for in his signature way, and the emphasis is on lost mornings and lifting you back up as the sun rises for one more moment.

06. Just Be - More And More (House Mix) [Crosstown Rebels | CRM101]
Next up on Crosstown Rebels comes the second outing for British institution Matthew ‘Bushwacka’ B under new guise Just Be. The ‘Annabelle’ release is a rumbling jungle of percussion; from moody and deep to down right stormy, these are high-octane cuts that deserve a cave rave sound system.
Title track ‘Annabelle’ is a dubby, atmospheric late night jam with grubby sub-bass snarl and morphing bleeps and effects weaved around molten vocal cuts. As the muffled voice creeps up from the abyss, all elements work in hypnotic symbiosis for the dance-floor.
On the B-side, ‘More and More’ gets two incarnations. The ‘house mix’ works an irresistible tribal roll, a loop of twinkling keys raining on Bushwacka’s signature drums. Deftly layering touches of the strange with disembodied vocals, Bushwacka! certainly has an intrinsic gift for unearthly moods. In the ‘deep mix’ the percussive storm takes hold again as dark stabs puncture abstract, eerie melodies.
An integral figure in UK rave culture, Matthew B aka Bushwacka! and the man behind The End Soundsystem and esteemed duo Layo & Bushwacka! is still on a tireless mission to make people dance, settling for now on doing so as Just Be.
Having emerged in the late 80s, making his indelible mark as a DJ with four residencies in London every weekend most notably at the legendary End nightclub that became his spiritual home for 14 years, Matthew was catapulted into the International circuit. Making music was always in Matthew’s blood however and the artist has a phenomenal six artist albums under his belt (a seventh on the way this year) as well as over 120 remixes, and 160 tracks. Moniker Just Be is making its mark on 2012 with releases signed, sealed and delivered on Get Physical, Maison D'etre, Plus 8, and Intec Digital and with gigs at some of the best clubs and festivals on the circuit.
07. Antix - Like Ships In The Night (Jamie Stevens Remix) [Perspectives Digital | PSDI 016]
Barton and Hayden Strom, otherwise known as Antix, hail from New Zealand with a musical background rich with influences from Ritchie Hawtin to Rhythm and Sound.
Brothers, studio partners, and seasoned producers whose achievements to date encompass four albums, a fruitful international touring career, and an array of heavyweight productions spread across their three monikers Antix, Fiord, and Triangle. It is indisputable that the quality of their music simply demands your attention. They continue on their musical quest to push new boundaries, mesmerizing audiences worldwide.
For the remix, we could only think of one person to bring it to the next level. Jamie Stevens has achieved amazing critical and commercial success over the course of his career. As one of Australia's most talented and sought-after music producers, he has proven his skill in professional sound design, film scores, and contemporary dance music.
As the founding member of Infusion, the much-loved Australian electronic live act, he's left his mark around the globe, headlining the biggest and most respected clubs and festivals including Fabric London, Pacha Buenos Aires, Womb Tokyo, Glastonbury, Coachella, and Creamfields.

08. Julian Jeweil - The Gang (Bastard EP) [Plus 8 Records Ltd. | PLUS8128]
Returning to Plus 8 for the third time, Julian Jeweil’sprofile as a contemporary techno titan has continued to grow. The Frenchman is now a firm part of the family and, when not in the studio, can be found owning dancefloors across Europe and beyond, putting to good use the experience he has built up over the last ten years since first emerging.
The EP opens with the titular track, ‘Bastard’ – a rolling, cyclical techno groove with slapping drums and dark, heavily filtered vocal loop. Tension comes from layered, skewed synths that grow louder and louder til breaking down into white noise waves that flood the rest of the mix.
‘Hey You’ has just as firm and rubbery a bottom end, but here the iron-like synths bring a little funk as tiny FX percolate right at the heart of the track. Wholly abstract as ever, all sorts of other aqueous sounds drip in and out, conjuring thoughts of long dark tunnels disappearing deep underground.
On ‘The Gang’ Jeweil lays down a restless, paranoid arrangement that sounds infected by alien space ships as an ominous vocal beams down from above. One synthhere triggers another one there, making sure the whole thing is dynamic and filmic in its make-up.
Closing out the EP is ‘ZouLou’, another steely techno stomper over run by alien sounds and non-human noises. Though his techno surely makes you dance, Julian Jeweilalso knows how to get the most of his studio equipment and colours his tracks with more than enough detail to keep your mind as active as your feet.
09. Mark Henning - Sunday Slide [Soma | SOMA348D]

London’s Mark-Henning has risen up as one of the international underground's true players - recording for a volley of acclaimed European labels by night and slaving as a corporate whore by day. But now Mark has freed himself from the 9 to 5 shackles and slog of the city to concentrate on his passion for music full time - ROCK N'ROLL!
Born in 1977 to English and German parents, he has spent most of his life in England, though has never forgotten his German techno roots. Inspired by a whole range of music (from Dan Bell to Dinosaur Jr. to Ed Rush & Optical), Mark-Henning's sound sits somewhere between house and techno, with a healthy dose of futuristic bleeps, funk, darkness, groove and deepness.
Mark has established himself as a player in the scene over the last couple of years, not just through his productions (on labels such as Cynosure, Trapez, Freude am Tanzen, Foundsound, Einmaleins, Frankie, Morris Audio, Safari Electronique, Mo’s Ferry, Milnor Modern), but also through his European-wide performances - mixing up his own clever style of deep, yet jackin' house and techno to get the dancefloor kicking up a sweat. His releases have found their way into the record boxes of the likes of Craig Richards, Brett Johnson, Akufen, Fumiya Tanaka, Ricardo Villalobos and Richie Hawtin to name just a few. Additionally his tracks have been included in compilations such as MANDY's latest Fabric mix cd and Magda's Minus mix - as well as acheiving airplay on BBC Radio 1's late night underground shows.
Balancing his heavy day job in London with his music wasn't easy, but the hard work over the past few years is beginning to pay off. Mark is now a sought-after producer and remixer in the underground scene and his DJing has taken him all over Europe - all whilst holding down a corporate job in London. Watch out for more top quality dancefloor grooves from this guy - he's only just got into 2nd gear.
10. Thomalla - Alftavatn [Krakatau Records | KKT 05]

Alftavatn is Thomalla‘s second EP release on Berlin-based Techno-label Krakatau Records. The tracks captivate instantly and still surprise with imaginative variety, sudden shifts and dazzling timbre. 23 year-old Thomalla was featured as a co-musician on Bodi Bill's European ›What‹-Tour in 2011/12 and recently started playing live-shows on his own. His tracks unite artistic and dancefloor-compatible appeal, which he was also able to show during last year's visit of the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid.
The title track Alftavatn was inspired by the icelandic volcanic lake of the same name. The result is musical force of nature! The single elements of the track sweep you away like an undercurrent, submerge you and still suggest a conciliatory calmness.
Propell resonates with the first track with its penetrating synthesizer lines and expansive pads. Yelling "Acid Acid Acid", it emphasizes melody while staying abstract and clearly pushing forward. Kikoshka features guitars and analogue drums and is still pure electronic dance music. Euphoric and narrative.
The second version of Alftavatn is derived from Thomalla's live-set. It's barely reminiscent of the original track, but as soon as the kick-drum sets in, there's only here and now, anyway. Thomalla's Alftavatn EP articulates his forward-looking interpretation of electronic music, embedded in references of his own eclectic education. Techno without thought control.

The album opens with the beautifully mellow “Kollekt”, the first of two debut tracks (the other being the equally adventurous “Stimmer”) from this new artist. Likewise, Kurtz & Bomber, an exciting collaboration between Troy Kurtz & Panic Bomber (Richard Haig) from Miami, USA debut here with the incredibly infectious vocalized “Never Sleeping”.
John Digweed’s ability to draw together an exciting array of international talent into one cohesive whole is pretty much unparalleled. “Resistance”” by Stuttgart’s Solee, shows exactly why he crosses divides and spans genres with his distinctive take on evocative melodic techno. Spain’s Paneoh (who also appeared on “Structures 2” and “Live In Cordoba”) displays all his hyper-energetic twisted brilliance on “Vetabom”, while one of Australia’s most talented and sought after music producers, Infusion’s Jamie Stevens, makes a welcome return to Bedrock (after his exceptional remix of John Digweed’s “Warung Beach”) with “Indigo”.
Rising UK star, Liverpool’s Jemmy, is given the lush remix treatment on his hypnotic “Quarry Bank” track by Greece’s Stelios Vassiloudis, whose critically acclaimed debut album, “It Is What It Is”, showed the world that variety is indeed the spice of life. So, it’s no wonder that Stelios makes three appearances on Bedrock 14, adding his wild acidic grooved “What’s That?” to the proceedings and teaming up with Florian Kruse and Nils Nurnberg as Wiretappeur for “Iridescent”, another example of this trio’s highly original and deep understanding of the power of melody.
Bedrock’s new talent is in exceptional form throughout. Canada’s Maher Daniel teams up NYC’s Nikko Gibler for the low-slung, spiralling beauty of “I’ll Wait For You”. Maxime Dangles has grown to be a key new artist in the French avant-garde electronic music community and is creating waves around the globe with his unabashed approach to proper club techno music, so its not surprise that “Unsteady Curve” is yet another example of his amazing music. Fellow rising French star, Antoine Husson (aka Electric Rescue), brings his distinctive brand of ultra-dynamic techno and sensuality to the party with an exceptional remix of John Digweed & Nick Muir’s “Raise” and his own monster creation, “Stucked Ship”.
Israeli producer Guy J has become one of the most sophisticated and emotive producers in electronic music over the last decade, with a body of work and a sphere of influence that belies relatively short time in the spotlight. With the melody-rich and emotionally charged “Mish Mash”, he shows exactly why he is one of the most inspirational artists in the world. As are Spain’s Marc Marzenit and Henry Saiz, whose “Sirens Land” explains why their complex and emotive form of electronic club music is exciting so many people right now.
So much exceptional talent is on display on Bedrock 14 and we haven’t even mentioned Germany’s Robert Babicz, whose music career already spans two decades. The mark of a true musical innovator, he continues to reveal his talent and skill as one of Europe's most essential techno producers here with another stunning creation, “Eastside”. Then there’s another Bedrock favourite, the techno tastemaker Christian Smith with “The Judgement”, showing exactly why he has operated at the top of his game for over a decade now. The chiming keys of Marco Bailey’s “Whispering Leaves” effortlessly lift the proceedings to anthem level and Quivver (aka world-renowned DJ/producer/songwriter John Graham) never fails to impress, “Fakes and Bullshit” sending out a clear message.
If you’re talking about exciting underground producers, two of the first names out of anyone’s hat should always be Igor Tchkotoua and Dan Duncan (aka Pig & Dan) and their intense “Crazy” is surely a highlight here too. Finally, it’s fitting that John Digweed and Nick Muir, producers of the finest electronic dance music, bring the show to a close with their “Trezz Intro” interlude, since between them they have been involved in many pivotal moments in the world of club music over the years and have in many ways helped to define genres & push the boundaries further. With Bedrock 14, the label also shows that it is not resting on past laurels but always moving forward, developing in an exciting direction.
So, once again, it’s hats off to Bedrock for raising the bar even higher with this exceptional compilation featuring 21 exclusive tracks from some of the world’s finest artists. In this day and age to not only survive as an independent label, but also to flourish and constantly evolve, bringing forward new and exciting talent, is something that should be applauded. Anyone with even just a passing interest in quality electronic music needs to think very seriously before leaving this collection on the shelf.
04. Jon Rundell - Reminisce [Intec Digital | ID029]
Jon has never been a follower. Very much his own man and entirely his own artist never being swayed by trends or fashions. Preferring instead to challenge and ask questions of what’s going on around him, Jon’s output has remained unique and interesting right from the start. Experimental at times, but always matured and versatile.
After last summers Knick Knack EP reaching No1 on Beatport it was always going to be tough to follow up with another EP for Jon on Intec.
Playing around with his sound and styles of late (check the recent Screaming Sunrise EP on Etch), The Revival EP has slightly more melodic influences than previous groove based outings.
All 3 tracks still have those elements to them that Rundell has become known for in his signature way, and the emphasis is on lost mornings and lifting you back up as the sun rises for one more moment.

06. Just Be - More And More (House Mix) [Crosstown Rebels | CRM101]
Next up on Crosstown Rebels comes the second outing for British institution Matthew ‘Bushwacka’ B under new guise Just Be. The ‘Annabelle’ release is a rumbling jungle of percussion; from moody and deep to down right stormy, these are high-octane cuts that deserve a cave rave sound system.
Title track ‘Annabelle’ is a dubby, atmospheric late night jam with grubby sub-bass snarl and morphing bleeps and effects weaved around molten vocal cuts. As the muffled voice creeps up from the abyss, all elements work in hypnotic symbiosis for the dance-floor.
On the B-side, ‘More and More’ gets two incarnations. The ‘house mix’ works an irresistible tribal roll, a loop of twinkling keys raining on Bushwacka’s signature drums. Deftly layering touches of the strange with disembodied vocals, Bushwacka! certainly has an intrinsic gift for unearthly moods. In the ‘deep mix’ the percussive storm takes hold again as dark stabs puncture abstract, eerie melodies.
An integral figure in UK rave culture, Matthew B aka Bushwacka! and the man behind The End Soundsystem and esteemed duo Layo & Bushwacka! is still on a tireless mission to make people dance, settling for now on doing so as Just Be.
Having emerged in the late 80s, making his indelible mark as a DJ with four residencies in London every weekend most notably at the legendary End nightclub that became his spiritual home for 14 years, Matthew was catapulted into the International circuit. Making music was always in Matthew’s blood however and the artist has a phenomenal six artist albums under his belt (a seventh on the way this year) as well as over 120 remixes, and 160 tracks. Moniker Just Be is making its mark on 2012 with releases signed, sealed and delivered on Get Physical, Maison D'etre, Plus 8, and Intec Digital and with gigs at some of the best clubs and festivals on the circuit.

Barton and Hayden Strom, otherwise known as Antix, hail from New Zealand with a musical background rich with influences from Ritchie Hawtin to Rhythm and Sound.
Brothers, studio partners, and seasoned producers whose achievements to date encompass four albums, a fruitful international touring career, and an array of heavyweight productions spread across their three monikers Antix, Fiord, and Triangle. It is indisputable that the quality of their music simply demands your attention. They continue on their musical quest to push new boundaries, mesmerizing audiences worldwide.

08. Julian Jeweil - The Gang (Bastard EP) [Plus 8 Records Ltd. | PLUS8128]
Returning to Plus 8 for the third time, Julian Jeweil’sprofile as a contemporary techno titan has continued to grow. The Frenchman is now a firm part of the family and, when not in the studio, can be found owning dancefloors across Europe and beyond, putting to good use the experience he has built up over the last ten years since first emerging.
The EP opens with the titular track, ‘Bastard’ – a rolling, cyclical techno groove with slapping drums and dark, heavily filtered vocal loop. Tension comes from layered, skewed synths that grow louder and louder til breaking down into white noise waves that flood the rest of the mix.
‘Hey You’ has just as firm and rubbery a bottom end, but here the iron-like synths bring a little funk as tiny FX percolate right at the heart of the track. Wholly abstract as ever, all sorts of other aqueous sounds drip in and out, conjuring thoughts of long dark tunnels disappearing deep underground.
On ‘The Gang’ Jeweil lays down a restless, paranoid arrangement that sounds infected by alien space ships as an ominous vocal beams down from above. One synthhere triggers another one there, making sure the whole thing is dynamic and filmic in its make-up.
Closing out the EP is ‘ZouLou’, another steely techno stomper over run by alien sounds and non-human noises. Though his techno surely makes you dance, Julian Jeweilalso knows how to get the most of his studio equipment and colours his tracks with more than enough detail to keep your mind as active as your feet.

London’s Mark-Henning has risen up as one of the international underground's true players - recording for a volley of acclaimed European labels by night and slaving as a corporate whore by day. But now Mark has freed himself from the 9 to 5 shackles and slog of the city to concentrate on his passion for music full time - ROCK N'ROLL!
Born in 1977 to English and German parents, he has spent most of his life in England, though has never forgotten his German techno roots. Inspired by a whole range of music (from Dan Bell to Dinosaur Jr. to Ed Rush & Optical), Mark-Henning's sound sits somewhere between house and techno, with a healthy dose of futuristic bleeps, funk, darkness, groove and deepness.
Mark has established himself as a player in the scene over the last couple of years, not just through his productions (on labels such as Cynosure, Trapez, Freude am Tanzen, Foundsound, Einmaleins, Frankie, Morris Audio, Safari Electronique, Mo’s Ferry, Milnor Modern), but also through his European-wide performances - mixing up his own clever style of deep, yet jackin' house and techno to get the dancefloor kicking up a sweat. His releases have found their way into the record boxes of the likes of Craig Richards, Brett Johnson, Akufen, Fumiya Tanaka, Ricardo Villalobos and Richie Hawtin to name just a few. Additionally his tracks have been included in compilations such as MANDY's latest Fabric mix cd and Magda's Minus mix - as well as acheiving airplay on BBC Radio 1's late night underground shows.
Balancing his heavy day job in London with his music wasn't easy, but the hard work over the past few years is beginning to pay off. Mark is now a sought-after producer and remixer in the underground scene and his DJing has taken him all over Europe - all whilst holding down a corporate job in London. Watch out for more top quality dancefloor grooves from this guy - he's only just got into 2nd gear.
10. Thomalla - Alftavatn [Krakatau Records | KKT 05]

Alftavatn is Thomalla‘s second EP release on Berlin-based Techno-label Krakatau Records. The tracks captivate instantly and still surprise with imaginative variety, sudden shifts and dazzling timbre. 23 year-old Thomalla was featured as a co-musician on Bodi Bill's European ›What‹-Tour in 2011/12 and recently started playing live-shows on his own. His tracks unite artistic and dancefloor-compatible appeal, which he was also able to show during last year's visit of the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid.
The title track Alftavatn was inspired by the icelandic volcanic lake of the same name. The result is musical force of nature! The single elements of the track sweep you away like an undercurrent, submerge you and still suggest a conciliatory calmness.
Propell resonates with the first track with its penetrating synthesizer lines and expansive pads. Yelling "Acid Acid Acid", it emphasizes melody while staying abstract and clearly pushing forward. Kikoshka features guitars and analogue drums and is still pure electronic dance music. Euphoric and narrative.
The second version of Alftavatn is derived from Thomalla's live-set. It's barely reminiscent of the original track, but as soon as the kick-drum sets in, there's only here and now, anyway. Thomalla's Alftavatn EP articulates his forward-looking interpretation of electronic music, embedded in references of his own eclectic education. Techno without thought control.
