Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
i don't think u can compare the 2, doesn't matter how well set up things are, if the crowd has no energy for the music then sadly the event doesn't go off... back in the day everyone was going crazy, sadly you just don't get that at todays events -
Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
I like the old raves, because it was about people who loved the music. It was pure.
I like the new raves, because the music reaches so many people. Offcourse the main stream gigs are not what I wan't but you can still find those smaller venues if you search for them. And I think that's nothing new, because those warehouse gigs back in the days were not easy to find too ^^.
btw: You quoted a Tomorrowland video, but the best thing about that festival is that there are 2 big stages and 10 little stages with underground music (La Rocca, Cafe D'Anvers, KozzMozz etc.) ."Computer games don’t affect kids: I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music."Comment

Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
The early day events were new, exciting and full of people that loved the music while taking good drugs.
These days its just full of people, some who love the music and some who are just there for a night out. The production of the new events has kind of replaced the original buzz to keep people interested.
Concept still the same but the energy has changed i think!Comment

Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
The early days was something special, and really special as ecstacy was been consumed not only in large amounts but on its own, and everyone was just so friendly, while it lasted it was superb, but then the gansters got in on it and everyone went back to coke and rocks and it lost that magic.
Don't get me wrong, the music was excellent and also fresh and new, but let's not kid ourselves, it was all about that drug.My Soundcloud page...

Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
Ahhhh I miss the days of Brassy's, AAHZ, MARZ, The Edge, The Abyss, Smileys Rave, Zen Festival, Infonet etc...Those were the days when the music was special and everyone was family (Peace, Love and Unity was the motto). I can't say that I actually get the same energy level now as I did back then. But I am 20 years older now (but I can still kick it)!

Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
My first thought was "I don't think kids today would have lasted that long at the raves of yore".
Some of those old parties would go for days. I think now they go from like noon to maybe 10 or 11pm. And then everyone gets a good night rest and shows up tomorrow.
I think the allure of the old-style raves was that you'd experience something completely fresh, stuff that you couldn't find anywhere else (like clubs or the radio, etc...). Everything was new, everything was special, nothing was commercial and everyone was free. Everything was organic and connected somehow.
Today, the volume of kids showing up to these parties is great but it lacks that je ne se quois component. As cool as some can be (particularly in Europe, and, well, pretty much only in Europe), the ones I've been to feel like one giant commercial for Tide. Everything bright, everything beautiful - but the brightness and the beauty is built in rather than there on its own as it is.
Last thought: imagine for a moment if the movie Groove was all about setting up a massive festival and Digweed finally showing up to play. Woulda been kinda boring.
Pretty sure I know where a majority of MSers would rather be if given the choice. lolyou could put an Emfire release on for 2 minutes and you would be a sleep before it finishes - Chunky
it's RA. they'd blow their load all over some stupid 20 minute loop of a snare if it had a quirky flange setting. - Tiddles

Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
Loved the underground vibes of Durban in the 90s - Would do pubs on the Friday night then go big on the Saturday - 330 was the club in Durban - spun some amazing music all night till about 10 in the morning then we would all move to a Sunday house party around a pool and carry on till 6 at night then sleep, work the week and start psyching yourself up for the next weekend.
I think I am a bit too old to travel around the world just to party but if I could - would love to go to Tomorrowland for the experience

Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
Everyhing in the past seems to be better than nowadays (I loved listening to HC at Pacha BsAs back in 2000-2001). I think it has to do with nostalgia and attachments to what we built as memories, leaving aside what we don´t like and filling them with goos feelings.
But... that video of tomorrowland is epic! I´ve never been to something that big. I´d go there as a tourist, but never in my hometown. I´m out of crowded places. It´s a spiritual thing!

Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
I think that video of Tomorrowland looks shite!
The thing that was cool about the rave scene back in the day was you were doing something different, while the other kids at school, college, Uni, the office were going out and dancing with their Martinis and Mexican Beers with a poncy lime shoved in the top at some Disco that had been designed to look like a some gypsies idea of cool we were breaking into warehouses and fighting the police to get in, and then dropping copious amounts of pills over the next 24 hours while listening to music that simply had never been heard before.
You would sit in the office on a Monday morning listening to how 'Craig' got off his head on 10 pints and just laugh at the cunt.
It was an exclusive club that needed people to meet up from all over the country to make it happen and make it big enough, we were just a handful from each city who got it, and thefact you were into something that know one else knew about is what made it extra special. My Soundcloud page...

Re: Raves then vs. Raves now
I wouldn't even call these raves at all - these are festivals and concerts and nothing more than that...it's all about watching the stage to see the dj and mass amt of crowds with high ticket prices, etc. Raves had more of a family aspect to them...we knew each other from attending events in the area or a span of a couple states and it was not about watching the dj on a stage but going to dance and enjoy what they are playing, making new friends into the music, sharing mixtapes, etc...more of a community aspect...i still don't get everyone facing the dj and not really dancing...raves we really had a great time dancing.
These are just simply mass events with large attendance...when people go home, that's it...they don't really connect with the other people there necessarily as we did at raves.Comment

Ok, then I could change the title to:
Electronic Dance Music Events then VS. Electronic Dance Events now.
I understand the distinction you are trying to make about raves, but don't you think if people would have paid $75/person at a rave back in the old days, the promoters would have gladly accepted their money?
Florida didn't have warehouse raves, as much as we had clubs that were open until 5am, and raves like ZEN, which were outdoors.
It was fun while it lasted...Comment
