The Music
This is hour 1 as Diggers takes to the 2000s following on from a stellar warmup from Danny Howells.
01. Maher Daniel & Casa (aka Mike Casa) - Malgra (Emerson Todd Remix) [Circus Recordings | CIRCUS 014T]
Recent years have been busy for Montreal's Maher Daniel. As resident of Stereo, the city's legendary nightspot, he has warmed, shared and rocked the decks with the very best in the business. His natural progression into production first began back in 2009, with instant success. Early releases for Get Physical and Souvenir found immediate support and over the last four years Maher has backed up those releases and added singles and mixes for the likes of Rekids, Rejected, Monique, Bedrock and Leftroom.
For his debut on Circus Recordings Maher teams up with fellow Montreal man Michael Gracioppo aka. Casa. With a successful 8Bit EP under his belt, plus a remix of Homework's "I'm Into This," the Canadian is a talent to keep an eye on. "Malgra" sees the pair plunging deep under the jungle canopy. Xylophone melody, drum rolls and dramatic breaks help create a unique atmosphere.
A bumper remix package is lead by Kaiserdisco who bring their trademark funk with a weighty, warped baseline and euphoric break. New Zealand's Emerson Todd follows us recent smash on Saved with a smooth house workout. From the sleekness of that mix to the downright trip-tastic rework from new boys, Acid Mondays. These cats have been playing with those tree frogs again.

02. Dirty Channels & Bugsy - Alone feat. Amina (Pezzner Remix - Josh Wink Re-Think Vox) [Ovum Recordings | OVM-223]
Summer is here people and Ovum Recordings are about to kick start the season with yet another label debut from Dirty Channels & Bugsy… And this time it already comes recommended. Techno takes a back seat as the label continue their stunning run of house releases with "Alone." Label chief Josh Wink had asked house Don, Dave Pezzner if he had anything in the locker for Ovum. Having just completed his own rework of "Alone", he sent it across and within minutes the Ovum crew had fallen for its charms. Josh actually tweaked the original Pezzner remix for his own sets and before long has snapped up the whole release for Ovum.
Dirty Channels team up with longtime friend Bugsy on the deliciously smooth "Alone." With their warm bassline, velvety synth and the sultry vocals of Amina, the trio have delivered the perfect summer soundtrack. With a brace of mixes from Wink backed with a reworked and refreshed double from Pezzner, Ovum are ready to turn up the heat…

03. Gui Boratto - This Is Not The End (Âme mix) [Kompakt | KOM 239]
From Gui Boratto's latest album "III" comes "This Is Not The End", an indie minded track that convincingly demonstrates Gui's impressive skill set when it comes to emotional narratives embedded in a distinctively monumental context. Like his timeless "Beautiful Life" and last year's album highlight "Destination: Education" (already remixed to perfection by Terranova and Tale Of Us), "This Is Not The End" features the beautiful vocals of Luciana Villanova, who seems to know exactly what makes Gui tick - which doesn't come as a surprise, as they are married – and possesses this rarest of all gifts, an unique voice that seems to address each listener personally.
In his own "2012 Mix" featured here, Gui doesn't so much concentrate on the original's tearjerking qualities (which were already fully formed), but streamlines the arrangement for ease of use on the floor of your choice, making the track even more refined and addictive. Those of you looking for a slightly more adventurous approach will find their satisfaction with Michael Mayer's rework on the flip-side, where the source material's hypnotic qualities are brought to the fore, resulting in a masterful slice of catchy prime time psychedelica. With both mixes turning out to be instant classics, we can definitely confirm that this is not the end.
There is a digital bonus mix from Âme too.

[Juno Review]
Call it Latin spirit or put it down to his special talent, but there is no doubt that Gui Boratto has a knack for crafting irresistible, melodic dance music. The Brazilian producer's own 2012 version of "End" is a seductive affair, with the effortlessly sexy, drawling female vocal unfolding over an alluring live bassline. It sounds like what would have happened if My Bloody Valentine had ditched their guitars after Glider and gorged themselves on pure MDMA. Kompakt boss Michael Mayer's version is a pure club affair, with the melodies unfolding over a typical Cologne shuffle. Âme push the boat out with their 10-minute version ambling through a stop-start rhythm.
04. Tensnake - Around The House (DJ T. 2011 Edit) [Get Physical Music | GPMDA047]
In the digital age, the compilation has lost much of it’s former glory. Not too long ago it was an indespensible format for the music-lover. Was it brilliantly compiled and telling a special story, the compilation was a significant gain as a particularly successful artist album.
In recent times, the compilation has been cheapened with generic ’Ibiza’ and ’Miami’ labelling as the genre compilation all but disappeared from the scene.
This brought DJ T. to an idea, to create an homage to this nearly extinct format. As vol. 1 of the project is supposed to be a highly visible counterpoint to the ubiquitous, mostly House and Techno-stocked season sets and theme compilations, his choice fell on Disco; one of the oldest species in club music. Disco is currently experiencing a sort of renaissance, with many young, and until recently, completely unknown artists and labels carrying the heritage on by working with new and contemporary definitions.
Naturally limited by the selection of works available digitally, DJ T. chose a very personal array of 43 tracks to give the connoisseur an overview of the newest branches in the Disco-tree and to cover as many diverse genres the last three decades have seen.
As the ’cherry on top’, the compilation contains a handful of exclusive and unreleased tracks, including two new edits of the old DJ T. classics ’Philly’ & ’Funk On You’. Catz ’N Dogz appear with a remix of ’Dis’, the big hit of his second album. DJ T. also put his hands on one of his favourite classics ’Around The House’, one of the early works of the Hamburg-Disco-King Tensnake. In addition there are two unreleased tracks from the two mexican artists Robbie Akabal & Muan and Damian Uzabiaga. Enjoy!
05. Alex Niggemann - Don't Wait (Extended Mix) [Poker Flat Recordings | PFR 128]
Düsseldorf born Niggemann has enjoyed a constant climbing success in recent years thanks to his precise tech house productions on 8bit, Tsuba and Supernature. Now based in Berlin, he arrives on Poker Flat with this, the first single to be lifted from his imminently arriving album debut. We don‘t want to tell you too much about the LP right now, but if these two tracks are anything to go by, be sure you‘re in for a treat!
´Don‘t Wait‘ (Extended Mix) layers Niggemann's trademark tight, percussive beats as it builds towards a surprising vocal arrival and a killer, positively hung bassline. Equally perfect for late night sessions as it will be for the coming spring summer season, basking in the sun, it´s a versatile and uplifting cut in the true Poker Flat tradition.
A ´Moodapella Dub‘ is included in the digital release that spaces things out towards more Italo disco territory, while maintaining all the key elements for the floor.
On the B side a dubbed out synth voyage unfolds with ´Curious‘. Working snappy drums and airy, wistful FX, Niggemann skillfully tells his moody story with passionate charm. Swirling synth pads lift before a mid-point break gradually introduces a second theme, cementing the young producer‘s able hand at writing melodies and creating strong, rushing feelings.

06. Mario Basanov - We Are Child Of Love (The Mekanism Remix) [Needwant | NEEDW021]
Mario Basanov is one of the most musical and passionate producers we know so the title is apt for his new single 'We Are Child Of Love'. As the follow up to Lonely Days this release is equally matched in it's vocal quality. This time Mario passes the mic to Minalga who delivers a smooth sultry vocal, backed by Mario's ever-consistent production.
We need little proof of Mario's eclectic work and on this release he provides two alternative versions to back the slow mo original. First up the dub has a bumping old school feel with an energetic bassline that drives the track with snippets of the vocal intact. The redub delivers even more hefty bass that will grab any dancefloor by the scruff of the neck. The full vocal and skippy percussion has ensured the Rerub is already getting plenty of plays from the likes of Manik, Solomon, Soul Clap and more.
Finally new Needwant artist's The Mekanism deliver an excellent remix that brings a progressive touch and cements them as one of the most talented producers to arrive in 2012. Their mix is firmly for 4am floors, bringing both uplifting and heads down feel in equal measures.
We think this is a song that will be heard throughout 2012 and well into the summer months.

07. The Mekanism - Can't Believe [Needwant | NEEDW021]
We would like to welcome you to the world of Parisian super duo, The Mekanism, with a debut EP that will make you fall in love with their spin on disco infused house music. Effortlessly smooth and divinely deep, they capture an advanced and modern sound that will blow you away. The EP features three original tracks plus a remix and dub version from Needwant favourite, Mario Basanov.
Needwant get set to welcome you to the world of Parisian super duo, The Mekanism aka Damien Roussel and Raphael Cesario, with a debut EP that will make you fall in love with their spin on disco infused house music. Effortlessly smooth and divinely deep, they capture an advanced and modern sound that will blow you away.
The EP features three original tracks plus a remix and dub version from Needwant favourite, Mario Basanov. Title track 'Can't Believe' oozes with a funky yet deep groove and rhythm. The empowering melody and warm keys captivate the mind, as the murky vocal takes us deep.
Lithuanian hit maker Mario Basanov steps in for remix duty, with a housier, dance floor spin on the original 'Can't Believe'. Grumbling stabs and rounded melodic keys drive this remix with impressive results. Basanov also provides a digital only dub version to round off this solid package, which sees soaring strings float over the deep and dubby textures.
Next up 'Missing Love' is highly infectious with its forceful bass, fluid warm keys, steady claps and captivating, deep vocal, which will engulf the dance floor. Emotively deep and groovy, the enlightening strings and blissful synths roll over the electric bass groove and are destined to capture any crowd.
'Your Shade' is the third of the original tracks on offer from the talented duo. Using their own vocal for a French twist, they prove their artistic worth. This driving, deep cut is laced with a disco influence yet portrays a modern edge that evokes a classic touch with smooth, shining synth patterns.
08. Chris Wood & Meat - JR Juniors (Tiefschwarz Remix) [Souvenir Music | SOUVENIR044]
Souvenir is proud to present its 44th EP from a duo of Frankfurt’s favourite sons, Chris Wood and Carsten ‘Meat’ Schuchmann. Both Chris and Carsten have come up through Frankfurt’s music scene, Chris with his long time residency at the infamous Monza club and Carsten having started the city’s premier record shop Freebase, still going strong 18 years later. Trained as a studio engineer, Chris cut his chops under the wise wings of Pascal FEOS and joined forces with Meat, who held residencies at Cocoon and Robert Johnson.
Last year they dropped the mighty ‘Triple S’ on Souvenir, which destroyed dance floors as far afield as Sao Paolo to Ibiza. For this release they offer up another wild percussive workout in the form of the title track, something a little more syncopated on the humorously titled ‘Dub Your Step’ and a bonus track with an infectiously familiar little melody, not to forget a reimagining of the delirious A-side from the head honchos themselves, Tiefschwarz.
"JR Juniors" itself brings a distinct jungle-era drum palette, rough snares and claps hammering away while a chopped vocal raves it up, the slower house tempo doing little to lessen the frantic stabbing synthline’s effect. The brothers Schwarz smooth things over, bring funkier, tribal drums, reducing the vocal to a reverberating echo that ducks and weaves around your headspace. The third track, is like a little woodpecker has just landed straight in your eardrum, pecking out an insistent, wriggling bassline with an off-kilter half-step beat to accompany the track’s name. The digital only, is a pile of children’s building blocks whose constituent parts slowly come together, with an extremely familiar little melody underpinning the solid drum work.

09. Cormac - Narcosa (Jennifer Cardini's Vision Of Us Remix) [WetYourSelf Records | WYS011]
Upon its release in 2011 Narcosa quickly garnered support and love from Tobi Neumann, Ellen Allien, Steve Bug, John Selway and Anthony Collins, to name a few. The WetYourSelf! crew now release a killer remix package as they enlist the talent of Jennifer Cardini, Faster and Luke Solomun to reinterpret Cormac's cerebral techno ballad of 2011 "Narcosa", as well as showcasing an all-new original from Cormac.
The Original track on this release, "Haus", sees Cormac's continue his exploration of the Machina-Melancholia he has been refining over his past few records. Drum vocabulary is provided courtesy of the Roland-TR legacy, whilst subtle textures and sound design form a decisive nod to modern and established techno methodologies. Deep, fresh and seductively satisfying, this tune was designed for the discerning dance-floor.
Jennifer Cardini delivers an delirious wayward journey into Cormac's Narcosa. Deep synth notes, murky textures and drum machine hits are soaked in reverb. This mix recalls the work of Goblin and the glacial sounds of the 80s underground. Cardini has created an incredible hypnotising lullaby soundtrack for the now.
Offering up a streamlined dish in minimalism, Romanian talent Faster constructs an elegant labyrinth of percussive dub textures and sinusoidal tones whilst a firm kick drum and fast shuffling hats propel the track toward serious dance-floor language.
Luke Solomon takes us on a journey of a post-dystopian disco where human beings have been replaced by machines and robots who have learnt to dance. A dangerously funky bass-line threatens to consume all with the help of flying hi-hat saucers and an armada of synths, pads and textures. An authoritarian voice creeps out from the wilderness. If DBX had been commissioned to soundtrack 1984 in a futuristic alternative universe, it would probably sound something like this.
10. Electric Rescue - Lili [Bedrock Digital | Beddigi-19]
Few French electronic music artists combine experience, avant-gardism and guaranteed success on dance floors as Electric Rescue (aka Antoine Husson) does. Having previously released tracks on Sven Vath’s Cocoon Recordings, Boys Noize Records, Sci + Tech, AFU limited, Communiqué, Subject and Sign Industry, he first unleashed his distinctive brand of ultra dynamic techno and sensuality on John Digweed’s Bedrock label at the tail end of 2011.
“Dope” (BEDDIGI13) was a huge tune for Laurent Garnier, Sasha, Secret Cinema, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren and Dave Seaman, amongst a plethora of diverse DJs worldwide. Now Electric Rescue returns to Bedrock with the super-strong “Lili EP”, featuring three killer tunes.
“Lili” has all the ingredients to be a massive tune all summer long. Combining melodic techno attitude with a big room mentality, it has all the right ingredients. Already a huge tune in John Digweed’s sets, this is going to explode to anthem status worldwide over the coming months. With the equally exciting “Opened Hands” and “Science” revealing an experimental and diverse side to the Electric Rescue musical palette, this is a very exciting EP package indeed.
Electric Rescue’s reputation is already flying high in France through his residency at the Rex Club (Skryptöm parties) and organising the “Play” rave parties in Paris, Antoine Husson is most definitely a man to watch in 2012.
