RYAN-CROSSON.jpg
Looking out from our Farringdon office we can see a storm is brewing overhead. With just five sleeps left, our turbulent fabric birthday blizzard is well on its way and it's just a matter of time before our hefty doors swing open for 30 hours of non-stop rave. Out of the 27 artists playing, one is causing a big commotion for us and it's Detroit native and techno specialist, Ryan Crosson who’ll be touching down with his founding Visionquest members: Shaun Reeves and Seth Troxler skilfully shifting between inspiring individual and collective sets totally unrestrained between night, day and then night again, just how we like it.
Under their fledgeling Visionquest label banner, it’s not long before Ryan Crosson releases his first long player, ‘DRM’ alongside Cesar Merveille, following on from their 'DRM (Pt.1) EP' which dropped last year. Its release next month falls just short of our 13th birthday wish list, so instead, Ryan has gift wrapped this exclusive hour long mix for us, exploring his wide-ranging reservoir of intensely felt beats. As ever, we're sharing this one with you to download below and packing it with some extra emotional punch, Ryan tells us in great detail why fabric is so special to him.
"I went to fabric for the first time when I was 19 turning 20 so that was the Summer of 2001. I had no clue what I was getting in to. I was studying abroad in London, Brussels, Strasbourg, The Hague for 6 weeks and met a guy named Dave. He scored a girl I was keen after on the plane ride over from Michigan but I quickly got over it once I saw he had a copy of Mixmag with him. We instantly hit it off and started going to Limelight (Metalheadz night was OTC), Bar Rumba and Plastic People. When we made it to fabric it was something else. I was fortunate enough to see Funk D'void, Slam and Derrick May all within the time span of my trip and it was pure heaven.
"I had been to raves and warehouse parties in Detroit but was still a novice by all accounts. fabric was like a super club to me and the music just amplified every positive emotion I had about the whole situation. I often feel those first nights I had at fabric over 11 years ago, solidified my path toward working in electronic music and I cannot be more thankful. Since I have been fortunate enough to play one second of music at that club it has changed my life for the better and I always try to bring my best every time I step foot through those doors, whether playing, dancing or being a general maniac partier.
"Thank you to the staff at fabric especially Judy, Andy and Scott (post employment) and Lars/Funk D'void, Derrick May and Slam, whose 'Past Lesson Future Theories Double Disc' is still probably the most influential DJ mix of my life and more importantly a BIG HUGE MASSIVE thank you to my friend Dave Shannaman who exposed me to more electronic music, more Detroit, more information and more open minded attitude at a time when I desperately needed it and did not know it. Happy Birthday fabric. I hope to witness many more!"
Pretty good mix. imo)
