    Living in Geneva, Switzerland???

I know this is an international board, so I'm hoping there are some people here from or in Geneva. I have the opportunity to apply for a job in Geneva, but I would like some background on living there? Can anyone help with some general info? Basic info on me is I'm 24, from New York, and I have lived in London and traveled to Europe. Need a real perspective from someone and not a tourism website. Thanks.

I know they had a pretty important convention there some time ago. Good luck though if you decide to move there, I definitely envy your position to be able to even consider such a drastic move. Would it be too personal to ask what kind of work it would involve?

Switzerland is expensive... hope they're paying you a lot. Just under two months ago I was there, and I remember my buddy spent $14 at McDonalds on a value meal

My cousin happens to work for the UN and has told me about an available position. The position is for a Technical/Systems Analyst. The benefit of working for the UN, tax free money.

Thats one thing I've heard about Switzerland that its expensive. I'm more concerned on living there. In terms of nightlife, lifestyle, culture, etc. Being that I'm from NYC, would it be a hard transition?

If a value meal costs $14 in NYC, you should have no problem transitioning

The Exchange rate between the US and Switzerland is like $1.00 USD = $1.06 Swiss Francs. Slightly better for the US, but then you have to pay the exchange fee. Once your money is converted you think everything's good, until you see that all the prices are double what you'd find in the US... especially food/restaurants, from what I noticed. Seems like just about every other country the expensive part is taking care of the money exchange and the prices are about the same; not Switzerland.

Also hope you like eating, because they do 5-course meals for lunch and dinner both. Pre-salad(?), Salad, soup, meal, dessert, and coffee to finish it off. eating lunch for 2 hours is normal over there

                    Re: Living in Geneva, Switzerland???

I think this is my topic I moved here two years ago from Montreal Canada , the city is a very calm city with alot or rich people living here , people are a bit on the defensive so don't expect it to be like New York people wise, people dont tend to come and chat to you , ask you where ur from or what you do in life , nigthlife is almost dead since they have coule of meat market clubs here and some very expensive ass clubs where the richest of the world come to spend money, they have two or three underground clubs where they play electronic music , actually i am goign to see Jeff Mills tomorrow night , which is really a big event i am looking for .People goto Lausanne which is 60 km from Geneva where alot of parties happen since there is alot of Uni students.

Now Money wise, in Geneva generally salaries are among the best in the world (You can make a very good amount of money which is my first motive for moving here), yes the city si very expensive but for a salary more than 5000 CHF 3800/month, people do their grocery shopping in France since Geneva is on the border with France.

The City is beautiful but small but there so much to see around this area, also Geneva is really in the center of europe,Paris and southern France is one hour by plane , Frankfurt , London Rome are not more the 1 1/2 hours of flying , Easyjet is a Low cost Carrier and have a big base in geneva and they fly to the biggest cities in europe Amsterdam , Paris Rome Madrid, London, Budapest ..... and you can visit this places for very cheap if you book early with them i paid 50$ togo Paris round trip , so basically what i wanted to say is that you will get the chance by being here in Geneva to visit almost all of western Europe, a city every weekend and it wouldnt cost you alot.

I guess i ll stop for now , feel free to PM with any further questions if you have any , I will be more than happy to answer any of your questions.

Thanks for your help Bululu. That definitely puts things in better perspective. The selling point has to be being in the center of Europe and taking weekend trips for cheap. If I have any other questions, I will PM. Well, I'm gonna apply for the job and see what happens. And thanks to everyone else who responded.
