    Release Notes:

    01. Charlie Dont Surf - Surface (Broken Hearts Beats EP) [My Best Friend Ltd | MBF LTD 12043]

Charlie Don’t Surf is the new signing at MBF LTD and sees a new upcoming artist with a lot of talent. Although pretty much of a new face he has already released on labels like Nick Warren’s Hope Recordings and Spinnin records sub label Pony Play.

Charlie’s interpretation of advanced melodic deep house music is tearing defying genres in a big way... he is totally on his own we think.

"Surface" starts with a bit of an soundscape creating an atmosphere for the the track out of which it peels off slowly piece by piece. You’d be surprised which direction the track takes and the brilliant break will lead you by no means to an direction you expect the track will turn to. We will not say much about it here take a listen yourself. When the track ends and you try to grasp it it eventually will lead you to comparisons to post Latin music as referred to maybe by Luciano or Isolée but even with this we could be totally wrong.

"Genko" starts like a drum machine on havoc, and sequences sneaking into it by command, then all dissolves in areas of sounds, melody keeps coming, accumulating... then disappearing, getting clubby again. This track is a musically intense voyage and has many things in common with the opening track in terms of advanced arrangements, genre bending and not being afraid of taking risks. We love it for that!

"Fris" kicks off like an old jazz record from the 30's all gritty and dirty. Slowly step by step chords conquer the track… creating layers of memories and moods. "Fris" has the intensity of slow-motion. Everything happens super slow but everything is super intense at the same time, which is done by sharp contrasts in the arrangements, introducing new parts that take the track drastically in new directions, never loosing the path! This track is as good as the two before.

Ok we leave this track and turn towards "Analogie Ivy" because the track name is so nice. "Analogue Ivy" is a catchy track maybe easier to access for some but it is still advanced very much indeed… it’s programming is fantastic and offers a lot of human feeling & liveliness. Respect!

The last track and title track of the release is "Broken Heart Beats". It highlights a stronger dub feel as well as putting forward a pop appeal by longer vocal passages.

    Release date: 30th November 2012

    02. Fischer & Kleber - Air [Souvenir Plus | SOUVENIRPLUS18]

Fischer and Kleber have most definitely been thinking outside the box for their latest EP on SOUVENIRPLUS.

Over four tracks the German duo demonstrate their range and skill in creating taut and effective melodies. They kick things off with a gentle, tinkling beat that reminiscent of early midi accompaniments, over which euphoric piano keys lift the tone to new heights. The bassline hisses along until hurtling headfirst into a powerful, pleading baritone that positively urges ones hands further into the air. Next up things get tribal, the banging of the drums accompany some synth stabs which ratchets up the tension, as some guttural voices chant along. A Twilight Zone-like eerie synth announces the massive drop, as the bassline hits like a speeding locomotive.

‘Wonderful Life’ is quite the change of pace, baroque chamber strings clash with a slow insistent beat and a distended male cabaret voice as the cherry on top of this weirding cake. A most effective mood piece and most definitely the first time we’ve had a viola di gamba on a Souvenir release! Will cause some consternation to the confused at many an after hours. The closer is something more approaching the traditional driving F&K dancefloor sound, a lethal tool of pure grinding rhythm, textures provided by small synth details and a repeating vocal quack. Somehow the combination of the plucked string sounds, and some chopped early music snippets lift the mood, turning a seemingly dark beat into an unexpectedly soaring track.

    RELEASE DATE : 10 dec 2012

    03. Amine Edge - Yeah [Alola | ALD005]

Alola is proud to welcome Amine edge to the family.

With two upcoming singles on the label before his ‘Sounds like Alola compilation’ in 2013, alongside Mr C and Omid 16B who are up next , it’s fair to say the Alola camp are quite taken with Amine’s sound. First getting in touch with the label in 2009, label boss Omid 16B describes his direct and enthusiastic approach as “all about the music” adding “he kept sending me stuff which kept getting better and better . His music was very much on my tip, bridging the gap between the older methods and the new whilst getting his message out there.

‘Yeah’ is a funked-up deep track with a distinct smokey edge to it, perfect for both setting the vibe early in the night or one that will slot into any rolling journey. Making use of spliced up vocals and combining them with a sonic fusion of string instruments and jazz infused melodies, Amine brings it all together with his skilled production.

Omid's edit provides a driven DJ tool, ready to be dropped at just the right moment ...in and out ! ‘Yeah’ is out early December 2012.

    Released by: Alola
    Release/catalogue number: ALD005
    Release date: Dec 3, 2012

    04. Nick Olivetti - Olympia (Will Monotone's "Beat Driven" Remix) [Trapez Ltd. | TRAPEZLTD119]

Nick Olivetti released his "Hectic Guitar EP" with us in December 2011 which got a lot of attention. Since then he has been on Monique and is due for a release on Claude VonStroke Dirtybird label so a lot has happened. His 3 new Trapez ltd tracks are real beat machines with a lot of understatement keeping still a bit of the gospel filled Trapez ltd sound of the last releases. So lets tune into them.

"Olympia" is a powerhouse of a track with a kick drum made out of steel retarded cosmic vocal and snapping percussion that act like a Swiss army knife. This is a special track for specula people deep but also quite edgy on a high production level.

"Dr. Strangelove" starts with the clicking from a slight out of time alarm clock and than transfers into a drum roll and a spoken monologue about a person called "Dimitri". The track has a vibrant stop and go feeling that is quite unique and risky and may as well be referred to as a modern "clonk" track.

USA/ Boston born Will Monotone has remixed "Olympia". Will has been regularly in the top Beatport charts throughout the last years and has his eyes set on the global dance floor. His remix meets the demands of American tech house lovers with bravo, working with continuous signals, rather then with collage -cut ups- never loosing control, steering the track to destination dance floor with sovereignty and creating a nice pack for Trapez ltd.

    05. Juho Kahilainen - Soitimella (Etapp Kyle Remix) [Subself Records | SS21]

Deep hypnotic journey by finnish Juho Kahilainen (Bpitch, Prologue) alongside eclectic remixes from Etapp Kyle (Aconito rec) and Dave Miller (Abstract Division).

    Released by: Subself Records
    Release/catalogue number: SS21
    Release date: Dec 13, 2012

    06. Life & Death - Morgana (Carl Craig Remix) (Step Aside Remixes EP) [Visionquest | VQ021]

Originals // The hottest label to come into inception this year, Visionquest has surprised, beguiled and enthralled us with some of the most celebrated releases from the most inciting artists and producers, in many cases making their debut on the label. Here we welcome back Tale of Us alongside cohorts Greg Oreck & Holmar Philipsson – Thugfucker as Life And death. Here they also rope in the vocal talents of Scott McCloud.

The A side ‘Step Aside (Lightweight)’ is a fantastic slice of laconic lazy house with growling, pulsing bass line gradually turning more and more analogue and acidic as the warm enigmatic omnipresent pads infuse Scott’s snarling dismissive vocals as he makes himself at home, in the USA! On the flipside and ‘Morgana’ is of equal stature. A darker, hallucinogenic journey, a jacking groove underpins the bubbling disengaged playful synth line that becomes more and more twisted and hallucinatory finally giving way to a volley of great disco fills.

Life and Death have recently remixed PillowTalk, No Regular Play and Gus Gus. The Tale of Us half of Life and Death are no strangers to Visionquest releasing the pivotal ‘Dark Song EP’ earlier this year and the anthemic ‘Winds of Change’. Thugfucker, have been producing music for many years on labels such as Brique Rouge, Music For Freaks, and their own Thugfucker Records, but most notably on the impeccable Italian based label Life And Death. This magical pairing has produced a worthy year-closing release for Visionquest. Both tracks are set to be remixed by Carl Craig and Jamie Jones for a release in the New Year.

Remixes // This time last year, Life And Death – the dream team comprised of modern house heroes Tale Of Us and Thugfucker – released a dual weapon of stealth killer club tracks ‘Step Aside’. Now given the royal remix treatment by super producers Carl Craig and Jamie Jones plus Rework flexing their minimal funk, the EP gets a whole new lease of life.

First up, Carl Craig, a true forefather of Detroit and Planet E boss, enters the Visionquest repertoire with a heavy duty ‘Morgana’ remix. Staying faithful to the dark and hallucinogenic journey of the original with its stormy twists and turns, Carl delivers the perfect stomping gear, pitching things up and pairing the growling disengaged synth line with driving hi-hats for a more jacked up groove. An explosive storm is just about contained in the tension, letting off shoots of steam in all the right places.

On the flip, the inimitable Jamie Jones takes the reigns for the first remix of ‘Step Aside’, lifting the track from its deep and dubby expanse into to a backdrop of bleep filled space funk, injecting the bassline with his infectious dancefloor appeal and playing with the melody of the bubbling synth line. Another first appearance on the Visionquest imprint but a long time friend of the group, Jamie Jones is without doubt one of the most in-demand talents in the industry and currently making ripples outside the realms of dance music with Hot Natured.

Closing the package, German-French trio and Playhouse favourites Rework, deliver a remix of ‘Step Aside’ in their own alternative stripped back style, underpinning Scott McCloud’s chopped up vocal with deep old school chords and combining them with fresh female vox courtesy of band member Sacha Hedgehog. Also made up of Daniel Varga and Michael Kübler, Rework are specialists in edgy, minimal funk and ooze new-wave sex appeal. Recent EPs have been dropping on Meant Records and Items & Things.
