Great film, just managed to catch it yesterday.
I really liked how Spielberg managed to represent all the angles involved in getting the 13th Amendment passed, and how the end of the Civil War was endangering getting it passed. It does a great job of showing how a democracy works, and the obstacles it can present in getting the job done. Stellar Casting with Jared Harris, James Spader, David Strathairn, Tommy Lee Jones, Sally Field and (obviously) Daniel Day Lewis, with a host of other actors coming in for short, but very memorable roles (like Jackie Earl Haley as Alexander Stephens, the vice president of the confederates). It's definitely Oscar bait, but it's still an extremely well made movie on it's own mertis, with the ability to explain all the players and the interests that they represent.Comment
