01. Locodice - Lolopopinho (5 Years Desolat EP) [Desolat | DESOLAT 025]
We celebrate our 5th anniversary with a very special edition of our annual sampler: 2x12" and a CD with 15 tracks mixed by Loco Dice. Both formats come bundled with free mp3s download code.
Loco Dice’s "Lolopopinho" picks up where his recent "Toxic" EP left off: a groovy energetic whirlwind production that takes the listener on a head spinning journey into the recesses of the label bosses club-orientated mind. Shlomi Aber’s "Mancha" features a sublime bouncing bassline, whilst Yaya weighs in with a track that nods to a fantastically bright future.
The latest talent to emerge from the highly respected Romanian scene is Horatio. His track "How Much 909 Can You Take?" serves up a warbling aural assault that will easily get feet stomping. Lucero en Vivo’s "La France" first surfaced in 2010 when it caused a stir on Dice’s Amnesia Ibiza Underground 10 mix CD. A welcome addition to the sampler and finally getting the full release it deserves! The young blood of Desolat is rounded of by Alexkid’s ethereal "Enty" which provides some moodiness to proceedings.
And of course the mainstays of the label have also turned in impressive productions. Hector’s "Amorphous Mass" displays the dark depths of the Desolat vaults, whilst the first lady of Desolat tINI turns in a warm intricate release in "Room 305".
02. Laura Jones - Let Me In [Visionquest | VQ023]
Laura Jones has had a breakthrough 2012. Fulfilling touring dreams and winning the hearts of the global scene with her sensual melodic house and seductive, driving DJ sets, it may come as a surprise that 'Let Me In' is Laura's first, albeit highly anticipated, solo EP. Dropping on Visionquest, 'Let Me In' develops Laura's signature sound, painting a fuller picture of the artist through deeper techno shades, live vocals and trademark hypnotic style.
Title track 'Let Me In' could be Laura's most beautiful and textured yet. A first foray into vocals (a feature bound to build and develop over time) the whispery undulating layers of 'Let Me In' weave in and out of shimmering synth waves and ghostly melodic chimes while the 'Dub Rework' delves deeper and darker with a tight and punchy groove.
On the flip, 'Lose Myself' is another emotive builder, the spacious, raw groove filled with dubby textures and tingly FX giving way to lush pads that float through the echoing vox as drama builds with a melodic bounce to work the floor. Final track 'Every Thought' kicks off with reverberating rubbery bass and shakers, while a gothic-esque framework develops with evolving synth lines and filtered bleeps.
A protégé under the Visionquest banner and nurtured under the wings of Leftroom, Laura Jones exploded into the public consciousness in 2011 with her deep and intrinsically melodic vision of house. Her 'Live A Little' track was included on the 'Visionquest Spring Club Collection' sampler, and her breakthrough single 'Love In Me' stormed the Beatport chart and held the no.1 spot for several consecutive weeks - the second time courtesy of stellar remixes from Maceo Plex, Kate Simko and Eats Everything. Later came a joint EP on Crosstown Rebels and an immaculate mix for the Leftroom presents...series. Now with this timeless 4- tracker on the mighty Visionquest, the diminutive producer is destined for an even bigger 2013.
03. NR& (Nomi, Rampa, &ME) - Enemy [Keinemusik | KM017]
There it is, keinemusik number seventeen. We know what you’re thinking. You think you know how it works. You think, those keinemusik fellas will again be doing their little rotation thing, one producer getting a record out after the other, then a Workparty-joint venture at some point and then it starts all over again. Au contraire! This seventeenth edition is breaking the known beautiful, perfectly curled cycle. Just like that, so that no one gets bored. This record here is an appetizer for the collaboration-effort NR&, or rather Rampa, &ME and Nomi, the New York based singer that provided the recent movement of flamboyant Disco-queerness with its sexiest and catchiest hooks, teaming up with Hercules & Love Affair and doing her own project Jessica 6.
On side A they go full heat and directly for the ultimate, heartwarming club-anthem. “Broken Toy” is sneaking in with discreet percussions and some random field recordings on top, until the intro gives way to an instantly touching piano-accord. As soon as Nomi’s notably affecting vocal parts are hitting the mark, it should be evident, that this cut is applicable in various situations. It will inflame floors into rapture of love, it will be perfect iPod-material for lonely midnight-strolls and it makes a perfect new choon for the weeks and months to come.
On the flip NR& rather take care of everyone who is expecting a safe playing house-rehash of the above mentioned acts and tenderly let a lashing snare slap every preconception out of sceptic faces. “Enemy” makes no mistake about being manufactured in Berlin. Its stoic, technoid intent to pave the way to the floor with utmost straightness might seem like a contrast in comparison with Nomi’s warm timbre, but after some bars, you’ll find both in unrestrained, loving embrace.

04. Cozzy D - Listen [Lower East | LOW028]
It’s been a great year for Lower East with releases from some of 2012’s most promising up and comers suchas Viadrina, Alexis Raphael, Rebel and Michael Jansons. An indication of the attentive A&R approach and eclectic tastes the label owners opt for to keep things exciting.
The original version of ‘Listen’ opens the release here and Cozzy D delivers what’s becoming a signature sound for the London based producer, raw, emotive deep house with a contemporary forward thinking aesthetic embodied. Heady, shuffling drum rhythms lead the way alongside elongated, warbling sub-bass and a tight blend of vocal lines all intricately delayed and modulated to create an intense evolving dynamic. Cozzy nails it again with a peak-time, energetic cut.
Next up is Droog’s (aka Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin & Justin Sloe) remix, the trio are most notably known for their events at the Standard Hotel in L.A and have built a highly praised reputation through doing so. The mix takes on the form of dark, melody driven house as expected from these Crosstown Rebels, My Favorite Robot and Supernature artists. Their Culprit label played a leading part in driving this moody low-slung house sound and here they turn in just that.
To close the release Cozzy D drops ‘Stalker’, embracing a brighter, deep-house feel with swung 909 drums and a bumping tom-driven bass-line. He again displays his more than proficient production abilities cleverly manipulating an amalgamation of vocal one-shots to create their own melody entirely, further fuelling the weighty groove.
Lower East deliver yet another refreshing EP here with ‘Listen’ and it shows that 2013 is set to be another stellar year for the label.

05. Pete Gooding feat. Asle & Inez Gavilanes - Same Old Street (Robot 84 Vocal) [Secret Life Records]
With an 11 years residency at Ibiza's Café Mambo under his belt and a radio show syndicated to over 100 stations worldwide, dance music veteran Pete Gooding is set to release the debut single for Secret Life, a significant new label project in collaboration with the Cream / Renaissance events guru Murray McKee and Phil Docherty (aka Futureshock). The label and blog will define Pete and the boys' vision of dance music for now and the future, with a string of releases already in the pipeline.
'Same Old Street' features the talents of Scandinavian house DJ / producer Asle alongside Danish singer Inez Gavilanes. In the vein of Pete's previous work, 'Same Old Street' is a slick deep house affair, balancing the bounce in the bass with melancholic synth details and a decidedly haunting vocal from Inez.
The mix on the flip comes from Robot 84 in 'Vocal' & 'Dub' forms. Both edits conjure up feelings of a dancefloor at twilight, of getting lost in the vibe of an early hour set. Yep, they're a little darker, but the underpinned beat jack's enough to create an undeniably danceable groove.
Keep 'em peeled for more from Secret Life in the very near future.
06. Tiefschwarz feat. Argenis Brito - No Message (David K's Allegro Remix) [Souvenir Music | SOUVENIR052]
Hot on the heels of release 048 from Tiefschwarz with Argenis Brito on vocal duty, comes a neat remix package with contributions from David K, Strangers in Heaven and Re-UP.
French producer David K has released on all the major Parisian labels, Freak n’ Chic, Rue De Plaisance, Jetaime amongst others. Here he serves up a double dose, his ‘Allegro’ rework anything but, the vocals twisted out of recognition into a muttering chorus of demonic gremlins, while the mutant drums steadily beat out an ominous tone. A distant marimba and the odd piano chord that’s left hanging, a quizzical non sequitur, lift the melody. On the flip, David’s ‘Grand Piano’ pairs a shuffling, almost jazzy beat with a shower of tinkling pianos, the vocals washed with melancholy from the keystrokes that slowly morph into plucked strings.
Souvenir’s very own mysterious twosome, Strangers in Heaven, beef up the kick and make the bass-line snake and swirl, turning up the groove factor. The vocals provide respite from the tension, while skittering synth sounds come up close against the hypnotic beat. Upon You stalwarts Re-UP take it deep, a throbbing bass-line playing off the tightest of snare hits, a squelching synth hitting suddenly and a distended voice appearing too out of nowhere. It’s a total transformation, none of the original parts distinguishable, as if seen through a prism of the unsettling.
07. Sidney Charles - Malindi [Kling Klong | KLING076]
Since his debut 'Home Territory' became Kling Klong's biggest seller for 2012, Berlin's shootingstar Sidney Charles returns with his second EP for Martin Eyerer & Rainer Weichhold's label. Besides 3 very different original tracks it's dutchman Onno and Danito & Agent! (Moon Harbour, Cocoon) who are responsible for the remixes.
08. Daniel Parker & Phil2 - The Drums [Kinetic Groove | KGRV004]
Welcome to 2013 and a NEW release from Kinetic Groove! This time we bring you a brand new signing in the form of Daniel Parker and Phil2. Regulars on the club circuit in their home town of Siegen (Germany), Daniel and Phil turn their hand to production for their first ever release together.
“A Sense of Pleasure” kicks things off with a complex and infectious house beat, interweaved with simple chord stabs, strings and an old school vocal lick for good measure. “The Drums” leads with yet another intricate house beat and “party” atmospheric to produce a rolling floor filler.
Kinetic Groove’s Stefan Cordery has also completed a remix of the title track, “A Sense of Pleasure”. Stefan takes things BIG from the off with a deep uplifting bass line, driving house beats and old school strings. Watch out for the keyboard solo on the drop!

09. Javi Bora & Le Vinyl - Omatsuri [Hudd Traxx | HUDD 040]
Yorkshire's Hudd Traxx Imprint Kicks Off 2013 With A Bang Bringing You The Omatsuri EP This January, A Collaborative Effort From Spaniards Javi Bora And Le Vinyl.
[RA Review]
DJ Sneak, Mihai Popoviciu, Brett Johnson, Agnès, Rolando, Iron Curtis, Moodymanc… it's quite a list of producers who've appeared on Hudd Traxx over the years. Spaniards Javi Bora & Le Vinyl may not boast quite the same profile yet, but the pairing's debut for the Yorkshire-born, Manchester-based label shows undeniable quality.
That said, the title track doesn't quite have the impact of the other two here, although much of that's down to the expansiveness of both mixes of "Boreal." "Omatsuri" rides in on a ping-pong keyboard line that permeates the entire ten minutes of the track, eventually unfurling as a tripped-out, low-slung gallop, punctured by bass synth drops.
Then the fun really begins. The original mix of "Boreal" goes for the jugular from the outset, its chattering, dubby percussion hitting an early peak, before the entrance of a searing female vocal, the track settling down to a rattling groove that sounds like a porch door flapping in a gale. As if to underline its grandstand quality, every so often Bora & Vinyl drop everything, before rejoining the melee with increasing intensity. The sharper, more concentrated dub mix dispenses with most, but not all, of the vocal, adding some extra beats and cymbal flourishes, that rhythmic rattle sounding ever more intense.
