New Jersey is a state steeped in a rich musical history, especially when it comes to electronic music. From Kerri Chandler to Brothers Vibe to Tony Humphries, a multitude of renowned DJs and producers from the area have made their mark on the global scene. Another producer looking set to do exactly that is Brazilian/Portuguese/ Italian/American Mario Calegari - a man with a background every bit as colourful as his output.
Born and raised in the Ironbound section of New Jersey, Calegari spent his formative musical years in the nightclubs of downtown New York, where DJs such as Danny Tenaglia, DJ Vibe and Rui da Silva made a distinct impression on his tastes. And on his latest release for the fledgling Bikini Tracks imprint, it shows.
The 'You Ain’t Fresh' EP then, is indicative of both New Jersey and neighbouring New York strands. The title track for instance, saunters along at a restless, groove-loaded pace, while the sweaty backdrop of chimes and echoes eventually drag matters toward more skewed territories. The vocal is decidedly unconventional too, ensuring “You Ain’t Fresh” is the exact sort of dancefloor bomb that’ll make an impression regardless of where it’s dropped.
“Project D” is cut from a similar cloth, with even more high-octane sounds making their presence felt alongside a sliced and ominous vocal contribution. It might have diversified in recent times, but New Jersey House Music 2.0 is evidently every bit as exciting as to what’s come before.
