It's a nasty habit for sure. Personally I've been on and off for while now, I've never got to the point to be considered a heavy smoker.. I think i've been smoking 2 -3 cigs a day for the past 4 years but still i want to quit for good.
Just about a week ago I bought those e cigarettes which so far are really doing the job for me.

I tried them today coincedentally, it felt oddly like a cigarette. Burned my throat and I'm still feeling short of breath. Lol. My friend chain smokes them... It's sad. BUT! They are better than real cigarettes, I think. I've been told they are just as bad though.

there is no tar of carbon monoxide in them as its steam thus they are better than cigs, they just didn't cut it for me though, i used mine for around 4 moinths then ended going back to the real thing, i have one sitting here doing nothing.... its still nicotine though
the e cigs help me not smoke in my car... that's primarily what i use them for. they do help me curb not smoking before i go to bed too. so in some sense, they do help me not smoke as many regular cigarettes. if you do decide to use them, just gotta be careful how much you smoke them because it's easy to get way more nicotine than a regular cigarette and before you know it, you're craving more and more nicotine.

Dude did I live through that, smoked 2 packs of Marlboro Reds (best cig eva) for 2 years between 1995 - 1997 (yea I know I started real young). The Tar in those cigs is off the charts and I just couldn't slow down. Got to the point where if I didn't fall asleep in 15 min - 20 min from my last cig, had to get up and smoke another. Got so bad, I started smoking at home (when I was still living with my parents). Quitting was downright impossible because drinking chucks your willpower out the window and being in the company of smokers makes it a nightmare on your self-control.
Eventually, I just quit cold Turkey, stopped drinking so I didn't have to make it harder on my willpower and stopped hanging out with my friends for nearly 4 months. First 2 weeks were a nightmare, a month later it became easier and the weight came pouring in. It was all downhill (in terms of ease) after that but still, when I went out for my first night-out for drinks, while I didn't necessarily feel like I would cave in and pick up a cigarette in the beginning, a few drinks later, the smell of dem Reds was just too much and I had to leave the party.
Been clean since end of 97 but now I love having a nice cigar once in a while.
Quitting drinking tho, that's a nightmare on an entirely new scale for me
