Paul Kalkbrenner is one of the techno scene’s most glamorous figures. Even before everyone watched “Berlin Calling”, this film about Berlin’s nightlife, in which Paul Kalkbrenner plays a drugged up techno DJ, which made him famous over night, he made quite an impact.Yet, these days, the crowd’s ecstatic even before the first beat is played. Overwhelming enthusiasm is all around and almost tangible. And Kalkbrenner’s reaction? He’s bending over his controls, dreamy in a way, moving back and forth, smiling, and sometimes, as if he was in a trance, slowly raising his fist in the air. From time to time, he’s adjusting the monitors. Every move is answered with frenetic cheers as if he could no longer make any mistakes. By pitching the higher frequencies only, he gets his followers in a craze only to pay them off with the sound of their beloved bass drum eventually. His interaction with the crowd couldn’t be more smoothly.
