The Simplistic Equation.
Simple in his genuine appreciation and respect for music and brilliant in the mastered and well-balanced equation of his creations, Mario Calegari embodies the Simplistic Equation.
Born and raised in the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ, Mario learned at an early age that music would define him and that he would be glad to return the favor. His earliest influences included the flavorful beats of South America and the sultry, elegant melodies of Portugal and after receiving his first turn-table at 16, it was only a matter of time before those influences worked their way into his artistry.
Mario gained knowledge about the music scene in any way he could. Some nights you might have seen him standing at the door of a jumpin’ night club, others you might find him digging through his cousins’ disco collections. If there was music involved, Mario Calegari had to know about it.
In time his curiosity came second only to his talent and Mario knew it was time conquer larger prospects. Naturally, he headed to New York City. He found himself in the likes of Danny Tenaglia, the legendary Tunnel DJ, as well as DJ Vibe, Rui DaSilva, Victor Calderone and Deep Dish whose sounds continue to inspire him to this day.
As his addiction for House music intensified, Mario knew that in order to see his vision realized he would need to create outlets in which it could be shared. It was this realization that sparked the opening of his record store Planet Groove as well as his after hours House spot Fuel, both in his hometown Newark. It wasn’t long before Fuel’s buzz had him spinning for 15 hours straight for the insatiable crowd.
After noting that he now had a place to play music, and a place to sell music, he concluded that he needed a place to make music. And so, with everything else taking form before his eyes, Mario stepped into the world of producing. He partnered with Ray Briones, a fellow Brazilian from Queens and together the created “Dark Samba” which was released in Europe by Fatal Music based in Holland. An enormous success, “Dark Samba” was favored by renowned DJs across the globe accompanied by comments that production veterans would be proud of.
From that first turn table, to internationally recognizable beats, Mario Calegari remains the Simplistic Equation because for him it is exactly that. Simple.
