    When Hobbies Become Compulsive...

    They stop being fun. Discuss:

I learned to surf while living in California, it was great until I started becoming too competitive. I have tried not to get that way with photography and working out now that I'm a little older. So far so good. I find that as soon as I feel like I have to participate in a hobby it is no longer fun. I suppose message board participation can be that way too .

It was fun while it lasted...

I can see what you mean but I've never really been in a situation where my hobbies have stopped being fun... as I can't seem to find the time for my hobbies these days...lol

football and futsal...played in a semi pro league (most playerd in league were amatuer...my contract was a joke) and have played some low level representative futsal .. ..now at social futsal and ultra low league football I want my defenders to foul opposing players to break down the momentum of the attack.

also excessive gamesmanship in park football makes me look like a real knob.

virtually the rest of my life lacks any sort of desire to be the best or even good at x.

                  Re: When Hobbies Become Compulsive...

I'm an animal lover particularly dogs. I used to volunteer at a local dog rescue in my spare time and loved every minute of it. I would have taken all of them home if I could, it used to effect me emotionally quite a bit and sometimes i'd lie in bed worrying about them being stuck there in the rescue, without the companionship I knew they loved. My favourite day has always been sunday as i'd get up early, go to the rescue and walk as many of them as i could, for as long as I could. In the last six months my main job has been working for an animal blood bank, most of my working day i'm handling, transporting and caring for dogs. So, my hobby hasn't become a compulsion as such, but my hobby has kind of turned into my job. Sunday is my one day off and for a while now I haven't been to the rescue or seen any of my old doggy friends. I feel a little guilty about it but when sunday comes around, I need a break from the bloody things.

Writing this has brought on something of a guilt trip and I think i'll set my alarm early and go to the rescue tomorrow? That said i'm just about to go out to a rum promotion at a bar near where I live so i'll probably get hammere4d lol
