Re: Sasha live @ Viva Warriors pool party Miami
Make no mistake about it, the UK's DJ Sasha (real name: Alexander Coe) is the biggest star in a land where club DJs are often pop stars in their own right. Known not only for his distinct trance sounds in his DJ sets, but also his productions and remixes which have essentially pioneered the scene known today as Epic House, led by such artists as B.T. (whose talent he 'discovered'), Blue Amazon, Paul Van Dyke as well as his own records, such as "Be As One" a tune which crashed the top 10 upon release last year and has even won kudos from several major radio staions over here as well. It’s been four-and-a-half years since Sasha’s Involv2r, and the excitement surrounding the release of the third instalment of the series, unsurprisingly titled Involv3r, has been immense. So was it worth the wait? Y3s, it was.
With Involv3r, Sasha continues the series’ trend of taking tracks from his current favourite producers and reworking their various elements into a continuous mix that reflects his DJing style, with the result being a kind of hybrid DJ mix/artist album. However, where it differs from previous instalments is that it feels more polished and seemless. While Involver and Involv2r were both full of great tracks, sometimes they were programmed in odd, jarring combinations, whereas with Involv3r, every track fluidly follows on from the last and at times you don’t even realise you’re three tracks further ahead than you were the last time you checked the tracklisting. Vocal snippets from one track slowly dissipate throughout the course of the next, and small percussive loops or flutters of melody are teased into the mix well in advance of the track they actually belong to appearing. It feels almost more like a continuous live set built from the ground up than anything.
Musically, the mix is a snapshot of the current dance music landscape through Sasha’s unique lens: contemporary electronica, house and techno are the main sounds, but Sasha’s love of complex arrangements, engulfing melodies, tasteful vocals and full, well-rounded basslines put a distinct slant on the tracks here that make them both gritty and warm.
The opening third of Involv3r focuses on subtle, restrained vibes, whether that be in the form of uplifting chords and wobbly arps thanks to Growing Forehead from Taragana Pyjarama Feat. Kicki Halmos or a dark, brooding bassline and forlorn vocal like in The xx’s Chained. Fans of Sasha’s more traditional progressive house sound will be enamoured by the middle portion of Involv3r, which at times feels like its harking back to the “golden days” of prog with tracks like his densely layered remix of James Zabiela’s The Healing and the esoteric Battleships by Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka Feat. Abigail Wyles. Listeners who are hoping for a driving finish to the mix may feel let down by the final few tracks, as Involv3r really peaks at the one hour mark when Keep Shelly In Athens’ DIY forces it way into the mix but then pulls back the intensity for its final moments, deviating back into subtle electronica. Personally, this reviewer feels it is smart programming in that it takes the mix full circle, but some may yearn for a few bangers at the end.
For those of you who splurge on a physical copy, the release comes with a second disc which is essentially an ambient version of the journey described above, stripping away all the beats and focusing on bringing the subtle melodies and atmospherics to the forefront. A excellent recovery session choice and a great bonus to an already amazing effort.

'' It comes with deep regret that VIVa Management have to announce today that due to problems and delays with the forthcoming birth of Steve's first child he was unable to leave his wife's side and board his flight to Miami for the VIVa Warriors Showcase Poolside at Shelborne. This will of course also effect his appearance on Saturday at Ultra Festival.
Steve would like to personally apologise and his message was - "wish everyone the best time, let loose, hang low and let it all go.. VIVa Warriors..
See you all real soon. x"
