Underground Sound Of Miami Series 2 // The second instalment of the mighty “Bedrock_Underground Sound Of Miami” series continues where last year’s debut left off and features 11 totally exclusive tracks selected by John Digweed from some exciting new names to the Bedrock roster, alongside some of the labels favourite producers in the form of Robert Babicz, Pig&Dan, Marco Bailey and Guy J. The album comes in a welcome DJ-friendly unmixed format, with a superb bonus mixed version by Greece’s Stelios Vassiloudis. Once again, Bedrock has captured the essence of why electronic dance music is such an exciting prospect right now, showcasing the best underground talent, both established and new.

“The first USOM last year was so well received that a second instalment was a very logical decision. We’ve been able to introduce some new artists to the label, whose tracks I’ve been playing out for the past few months and I love how we can include everything from the deeper house sounds of Robert Babicz and Phonogenic to the more full-on techno vibe of Japanese Popstars, all on one release. I’ve also been playing out with Stelios Vassiloudis at a few parties recently, so it was great that he was up for mixing together the bonus disc for this release as well as including a couple of his superb tracks” [John Digweed]

    02. Jimmy Van M Feat Luxor T - Unknown [unreleased]

No info on this bad boy yet. Luxor Traum is DJ / producer from Buenos Aires with releases on Outside The Box, Plusquam Records, AlterImage, Galore, Maktub, EchoPlast Digital, City Lights Music, Carica and Mistique Music

    03. Thomas Schumacher feat. Caitlin Devlin - Every Little Piece (Hot Since 82 Remix) [Electric Ballroom | EBM003]

Every Little Piece feat. Caitlin Devlin is the first single lifted from Thomas Schumacher's forthcoming long player Stand Up. The two artists already worked together in the past ("Elektrochemie" with Stephan Bodzin) releasing classic singles like Pleasure Seeker or Mucky Star on Berlin's Get Physical Music. They still share their passion for melancholic electronic dance music.

Thomas was more than happy to be able to get some of his most respected fellow producers & artists to do the remixes: Simian Mobile Disco; Hot Since 82 and Joris Delacroix. The man himself added the club mix to the remix package. The single will be released on Thomas' own imprint Electric Ballroom.

    Released by: Electric Ballroom
    Release/catalogue number: EBM003
    Release date: Feb 25, 2013

    05. Coyu - Long Time Awaited (No Man Knows My History EP) [Cocoon Recordings | CORDIG021]

For several years now, the Spaniard Coyu has been one of the most active boosters for Techno and House music on the Iberian Peninsula. His own label, his remixes and, above all, his productions can be found at the top of Spanish club music regularly – and his Cocoon debut is no exception here.

The opening track "Long Time Awaited" may probably express what Coyu felt about this release, as he has indeed awaited this record and worked hard for it in the past. He immediately makes totally clear that he has done his homework. That's why "Long Time Awaited" sounds like the perfect blend of Guy Gerber and Reboot – at least two important cornerstones in the Cocoon Recordings universe.

"This is Gonna Change" takes out the energy a little, but still sounds mighty and quite peaktime-compatible, thanks to its driving bass line. "Ballade Du Avril" is what generally would be called "shining bright". Twisted and equipped with a breakbeat, this track forms a nice and skillful contrast to the loop-and-vocal-scrap formula that most contemporary producers use.

In the good old high times of vinyl, "No Man Knows My History" would have been labelled a classic B2 track: exactly those kind of tracks that make the true connoisseurs of electronic music appreciate their records until today, because with them and on them you can always discover many hidden treasures apart from the Main Mix or the deeper Dub Mix. And Coyu continues this tradition in a masterful way! Trippy, spheric, just a perfect piece of megacity soundtrack, somewhere in between 9 1/2 Weeks and Blade Runner... and still in the high times of vinyl.

    Released by: Cocoon Recordings
    Release/catalogue number: CORDIG021
    Release date: Mar 25, 2013

    09. God Within - Raincry (Submerged) [Hardkiss | HK 004]

Released in 2003 on the ground breaking San Francisco 'Hardkiss' label from Scott, Gavin and Robbie Hardkiss, Raincry is simply a true classic, that will forever be remembered as one of the musical highlights of the first instalment of John and Sasha's Northern Exposure series as part of a classic sequence of music, leading from Young American Primitive's 'These Waves' into the 'Submerged' mix of Raincry, before perfectly setting up Rabbit In The Moon's 'Out Of Body Experience'.

The Hardkiss label was largely responsible for helping shape the early San Fran house sound and scene, with releases from Scott Hardkiss (God Within), Gavin Hardkiss (Hawke), Robbie Hardkiss (Little Wing), Symbiosis and Rabbit In The Moon.

This seminal piece of work features on Transitions under sad circumstances following the loss of Scott Hardkiss to the music world.

The following excerpt from In a piece entitled 'Scott Hardkiss - Some short memories' from Dom Phillips (writer of the Global Underground release notes amongst other music journalism) says things quite succinctly:

"The Hardkiss trio made an album for London Records called ‘Delusions of Grandeur’. The title fit perfectly: confident and laconic. We loved it at Mixmag. It’s still on my Ipod today, and it still sounds as fresh and funky, as weird and wired, as ethereal and emotional as it did then.

Time does funny things to music. Time endows music with value, which is a strange thing to say about pop music. Or even electronic dance music. But if a song sounds as good, or even better, 20 years down the line, it’s because it was more than just the sum of its parts, the combination of sound and rhythm with which it was made, or written, or produced. It’s because it was bigger and better than its time or its scene or its context.

A song like ‘Raincry’ – and it is a song, even though the vocal is just a disembodied, musical wail – is like that. It’s one of the many quiet, unfussy classics of electronic dance music, one of those songs that were made because somebody wanted to make it. Not to make money or noise or a fuss. Just to create.

You can talk about the production or the melody, and you’d be right. But really, it’s about the feeling. ‘Raincry’ is soul music. Electronic acid soul from California." [Dom Philips]

As God Within, Scott Hardkiss released two versions of Raincry, with a 'Spiritual Thirst' mix also appearing on DJ Dan's 'San Francisco Project 3 - Take A Fix To The Funk' mix in 1994.

Raincry also saw remixes in 2003 from Innate (Toxic Dub), Koma & Bones and Jondi & Spesh on UK-based progressive house, tech-house and trance label Dorigen Music [DOR 015], who released tracks from Inkfish, Killahurtz ... as well as God Within's 1994 'The Pheonix under licence from Hardkiss Music.

Most fittingly Diggers dropped Raincry at the end of his Bedrock Easter Party - such a poignant and beautiful moment, Scott Hardkiss's music still lives on ... as does his vintage Essential Mix.

    [Spin Magazine]

Scott Hardkiss, Legendary Bay Area DJ, has Died aged 43. One-third of the Hardkiss Brothers, he was instrumental in helping to pioneer the U.S. rave scene

Scott Hardkiss (Scott Friedel), a San Francisco DJ who played a key role in the development of America's rave scene in the 1990s, has died, Big Shot magazine reported yesterday. The cause of death was not specified. Friedel was 43.

In 2011, Hardkiss underwent eye transplant surgery to restore vision in his left eye, which had gone blind from a degenerative disease called Keratoconus. Last spring, he wrote that the vision in his new eye was worsening.

    Alongside
Gavin Hardkiss and Robbie Hardkiss, Friedel was a member of the trio that shared their (invented) surname. They also went by the Hardkiss Brothers, although they were only related by their shared affinity for adventurous electronic dance music, preferably played renegade-style, in forests or on beaches under the night sky. Scott Hardkiss' "Raincry," released in 1993 under his God Within alias, was an early classic that typified the emerging Bay Area sound, fusing breakbeats, clean-lined synthesizers, and a healthy dose of spiritual uplift. The following year's "The Phoenix" was darker and trippier, with a white-knuckled breakdown, dueling breaks, and drum machines (not to mention squealing monkeys and Spanish guitars).

Friedel moved to New York in the late 1990s, where he continued to release music under the name
Scott Hardkiss; in 2009, he finally released his debut solo album, Technicolor Dreamer. Taking in a diverse array of electronic styles, the album featured contributions from a wide range of musicians, including Naked Music's Lisa Shaw, Dean & Britta's Britta Phillips, and session players recruited from David Bowie, Justin Timberlake, and George Clinton's backup bands, among others. Earlier this month, Friedel quipped on Facebook: "Justin Timberlake stole half my band! JT snatched up 2 of my featured vocalists from the 'Technicolor Dreamer' live show to back him on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight. Can't blame him, their talent & radiance is undeniable. Congrats to Stephanie Stevvi Alexander & Bobby Harden, you do your thing. One day the phone will ring to come back home & show em what we got. XX Scott Hardkiss."

This release was mastered direct from vinyl at the request of the DJ and as such features natural sound characteristics of this medium such as record surface noise.

JD's set is awesome! Not sure if its the high from all the festivals that he's just played at... but this set is massive.
