    Release Notes:

    01. Josh Wink - Balls [Ovum Recordings | OVM-229]

Four years since his last EP release and Josh Wink is back with Balls on Ovum.

Since his acclaimed album release in 2009 with 'When A Banana Was Just A Banana', Josh Wink has been heavily touring and working on building a new studio. Last year he produced his greatest creation to date, a beautiful baby son. After taking some time out to enjoy his newly found fatherhood, he finally got into his brand new studio towards the end of 2012. The outcome was 'Balls' - a ten-minute drive of pulsing intensity bating towards a huge breakdown, unlike any of Wink's work to date...

'I am always surprised with what happens when I go into the studio after not being in there for a while. I feel heavily inspired to make music by all the great things I hear and from personal experiences that have occurred over the past year. I didn't expect to make a techno track. However, the grooves came quickly and naturally along with the hypnotic analog pulses. Originally I came up with the foundation of my grooves using a beta version of Ableton's Live 9. And after I constructed the fundamentals of the track- I hit record, tweaked and grooved the components live for 20 minutes, and then tightened up and edited the best parts into a sequence. Then I played out, got some new ideas from crowd interaction, and re-tweaked and made improvement.

When describing the track to Matt (Ovum label manager) I was saying that I think that you really have to have balls to play this track, as it's a little different from most of the music out there right now. The track's time couldn't be edited down any further as the story and journey wouldn't be conveyed. So, the ten minutes is DJ friendly and I'm happy that I can express my tale. The track, usual of my work, is based on aural textures and tension. The breakdowns have changed through several attempts, and are now adjusted to drive the crowds, whether in clubs or festivals.' - Josh Wink

When you're as iconic a figure as Josh Wink, it's not so easy to sum up a career in a few words—but there are a couple of terms that might serve to get a handle on the seminal electronic-music producer's lifework. One of the most apt, certainly, would be longevity. A brief scan of Wink's mammoth résumé reveals the following: Early-'80 days as an underage mobile DJ; a major role in fostering his native Philadelphia's burgeoning warehouse scene during the house-music explosion later that decade; name-making '90s club hits like 'Don't Laugh,' 'Higher State of Consciousness' and 'I'm Ready'; a label, Ovum Recordings, that's undisputedly one of the most essential dance-music imprints; and his current position, after all these years, as one of the scene's most vibrant and creative DJs and producers (witness the critical success of his 2009 long-player When A Banana Was Just A Banana).

    [Partsan Interview]

After taking a break from the electronic world to enjoy fatherhood and explore family life, Josh Wink is back on the techno map. His new EP “Balls” is a courageous journey of Wink’s own musical background incorporated with trippy base lines, differentiating himself from all music that’s out there.

The EP is a sign of Wink’s excitement and enthusiasm for his return to a fully improved studio, and a summary of his life experiences in the past years. This groovy combination of techy sound with a slight break in the middle is already a dancefloor masterpiece and getting support from the likes of Sven Väth, Richie Hawtin, Tiga and many more.

Josh Wink himself says: “I think that you really have to have balls to play this track, as it’s a little different from most of the music out there right now.”
It’s always a surprise what can happen when an artist goes into the studio after not being in there for a while. Josh Wink explains that he felt heavily inspired to make music by all the great things he heard and from personal experiences that had occurred over the past year. He didn't expect to make a techno track. However, the grooves came quickly and naturally to him along with the hypnotic analogue pulses.

“After I constructed the fundamentals of the track I hit record, tweaked and grooved the components live for 20 minutes, and then tightened up and edited the best parts into a sequence. Then I played out, got some new ideas from crowd interaction, and re-tweaked and made improvement.”

So, here we go, let’s get the ball rolling! Josh Wink’s “Balls” EP is out on Ovum Records on April 15th!

    02. Mark Reeve - Move It [Truesoul | TRUE1243]

Forthcoming on Adem Beyer's Drumcode sister label Truesould. Mark also has releases coming up on Waveform (mid April), Soma (June), Intec Digital (August) and Cocoon (Sept/Nov) !

    03. Anton Pieete - Culture [Rejected | REJ028]

Arriving firmly on time for the approaching summer, Rejected welcomes back Dutch techno music maestro Anton Pieete for another killer double track EP fresh out of Amsterdam.

Known for his straight forward contemporary take on techno Pieete once again fuses together experimental synths, high-octane rhythms and rigorous patterns to bring us the next instalment 'Culture' & 'Cotton'

Culture & Cotton both focus on solid groove-layered four to the floor percussion. Culture showcases a futuristic twist with a digital pattern lead, electric synth & a warping bassline, whilst Cotton throws up classical elements of house with its airy synth lead & warm bass both bouncing off a solid tech pulse.

Extensive Tastemaker DJ Promotion through Exclusive Promo. All tracks have been serviced directly to global tastemaker DJ's including Eric Prydz, John Digweed, Danny Howells, James Zabiela, Sasha, Laurent Garnier, Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Sander Kleinenberg to name but a few, over 200 DJ's in all.

    04. Max Cooper & Nicolas Bougaïeff - Fracture (Nyma's "Amethyst" Remix) [Traum Schallpletten | TraumV162]

Max Cooper is now on his 12th release with Traum and if that wasn't already a magic number, he has teamed up with Nicolas Bougaïeff, co-founder and Creative Director of Liine in Berlin. Bougaïeff, in collaboration with Richie Hawtin and other Liine partners, built the controllers for the Plastikman Live 2010 show. The company provides the Lemur App, Remiix Apps and Griid, amongst others. Nicolas Bougaïeff has recently completed his PhD on minimal techno.

The collaboration evolved in Berlin where both of them met and as Max says in his own words: "Nick contributed a load of ideas to this EP, one being this great patch he made using Operator, with lots of nice squelch, and some cool melodic frameworks as a starting point." The EP comes in vinyl and digital format.

The vinyl version holds all original tracks whereas the digital version also includes several remixes including one by Microtrauma, Nyma and Logiztik Sounds.

Starting with "Fracture", this track is built on a massive bassline that could be described in sound as similar to a Roland 303, but we won't swear to that. Within the track a lot of eruptive sounds surface with force that show an almost "crystal and fractured shape", still being very much on the side of the dance floor.

In fact Max Cooper has played these tracks in his recent live sets and regards them as very attractive to the dancing crowd. It is for the collaboration that the arrangement here of a typical Max Cooper track has undergone a strong change with advanced tools at work… the manipulation of sounds has been pushed to another though different level. The release with Nicolas Bougaïeff can therefore be described as an exciting stream of consciousness rather then an arrangement that has been fully formulated beforehand.

"Meadows" is the most electronic-ambientish of all trax on the EP, somehow painted in golden colours with shades of Joy Division melancholy at the beginning, then diving into a much sweeter sea of sounds, bathing, relaxing, breathing, collecting energy… making use then of a of repetition in sound that reminds us of Steve Reich's methods.

"Ellipse" is another dance floor track again, working on two levels, one being the arpeggiator sequenced sound-melody that could as well be described as funky and early Luciano flavoured and on the other side featuring sound shaping that includes aspect of randomness. The central point of the track is the subtle evolving dynamic or rather a journey-like spirit. At the end of the track you realise you have come full-circle and this gives the track an organic feel not unlike "Fracture". Says Bougaïeff: "The core of the melody was improvised in 20 minutes with a hardware Lemur a couple years ago. It was a great little sequence just waiting to be developed into a full track."

"Walls" could very well end up being a fantastic after-hour tune, since it is super reduced and almost haunting. It starts with a drum pattern meeting a controlled sequence of a single tone in repetition, which brutally gets interfered with by a strong fuzzy synth sound and creating something like a Radiohead kind of feeling! What a great closing track!

Track 5 features a remix of "Meadows" by Microtrauma. The duo has transformed the ambientish broken beat aesthetic of the original and transformed it into am epic "hymn like" techno track , showing great details by using sound snippets from the original, bringing ends together here in a very skilfully way, surprising with their arrangement... all resulting in an hypnotic and at times almost romantic piece of high quality music.

The second remix features Berlin based artist Nyma who has been busy as a DJ and since 2005 also as a producer. He did the technical support for Ableton and studio support for artists from the likes of Richie Hawtin, Carl Craig and Loco Dice in the past. Nyma has remixed the track "Fracture" and has kept a minimalistic "stripped-down staccato structure" approach" with an low key edge... hence a lot of understatement emerging from it… making it in many ways retrospective of American and Canadian techno music and through that very universal and DJ friendly.

The last track highlights South American producer Nicolas Silvano aka Logiztik Sounds from Montevideo, Uruguay. In 2005 he wrote his first track, which was quickly picked and played by Hernán Cattaneo. He has released music on Global Underground, Little Mountain, Vapour, Sprout and emFire, Sasha’s label and has gained support from Dave Seaman, Nick Warren, James Zabiela, Jimmy Van M, Anthony Pappa, Pete Tong, Sander Kleinenberg and more. Nicolas is more in tune with the progressive and playful side of progressive techno music than Nyma hence his remix of "Ellipse" has turned out to be more melodic and colourful.

    05. Oniris - Leaving Earth [Bedrock Records | Beddigi-33]
    08. Oniris feat Pat Brooks - Rebirth [Bedrock Records | Beddigi-33]

Proving that amazing electronic dance music can come from absolutely anywhere in the world, if you travel 1,210 kilometres east from Australia into the heart of the southwest Pacific Ocean to a place called Nouméa on a group of islands collectively known as New Caledonia, you will find a certain Oniris, creator of some of the most sublime melodic techno that you will hear this year.

Up until now, this mysterious and exceptional young producer has been picking up praise and support from some of the world’s most savvy and innovative forward-thinking artists & DJs. When Laurent Garnier is waxing lyrical about your talents on his radio show, and your tracks are highlights in the sets of such illustrious people as John Digweed, Agoria, Psycatron, Marc Romboy and Ian O'Donovan, there is most definitely something very special going on!

As Ian O’Donovan says: “I’ve been playing these tracks for a while now and they are amazing! They are dynamite on the floor and beautifully melodic! A fantastic introduction to an artist I'm sure you'll be hearing plenty more of!”

Remember the name and remember where YOU heard him first.

    [Special House Association Review]

Being a habitual go-to for the likes of Laurent Garnier, Digweed and Marc Romboy – I was open eyed and tantilised by a press release that states – ‘Travel 1,210 kilometres east from Australia into the heart of the south west Pacific Ocean to a place called Nouméa on a group of islands collectively known as New Caledonia, you will find a certain Oniris’. Now – I remember crate digging to find a new label or artist, but this is seriously dug out stuff in producer terms from Bedrock. So, with baited breath, I put on the EP to see what all the damn fussing is about – and I have a swathe of emotions to convey.

Ascend is nice, with clean and decent tech production, and certainly a decent ‘B’ side for warming an undemanding dance-floor.

Leaving Earth ramps up the creativity somewhat with some Jarre and Moroder-esque synth work over a much more direct and cool production. There’s melody aplenty here too which will satisfy both progressive fans and even trance fans with some neat touches and immaculate sound work.

The cherry on the cake, however, is The Rebirth, featuring the mysterious Pat Brooks. I can quite happily say, you can happily tip Knights of the Jaguar and Strings of Life to the side as you have a modern classic on your hands.

From the first moments where the piano filters upwards and arps the chord progressions out your hoping for something special. The beats are tidy, punchy and bounce off the melodies perfectly, enticing you into a state of hopeful expectation. The piano then stabs over the production before unrolling before the bass-line. From here there are several brilliant passages as the percussion and piano interweave before the break. Add some sublime pizzicato before being enveloped in a full and sweeping string ensemble.

There is more, much more to this – but you really need to explore, envelop and wrap yourself in amongst the beauty here which words cannot convey, but the dance-floor can. I have absolutely no doubt that this will be played, loved and enjoyed for many years to come, with people recalling which dj played it and where – a complete and utterly joy from start to finish.

    06. KDGH - Mi Fella (Ramon Tapia Remix) [Gem Records | Promo]

Forthcoming release from Utrecht's Kaap de Goede Hoop .. limited info.

Kaap de Goede Hoop (roughly translated as “Keep the Good Hope”) consists of two producers, Bobby van Putten and Robbert van der Bildt, situated downtown Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Barely influenced by the music of the present, Bobby and Robbert make music they like to experience. Barriers and rules are often avoided while they make and play music.

"…Music is simply said a language everybody understands. Though our challenge is to invent new words to expand our and the audience's musical vocabulary…".

Secret Cinema was the first one who was attracted to the sounds and vision of these two gentlemen. He offered them two spots on the Gem Samplers on his imprint Gem Records to introduce themselves to the outside world. Their next releases on GEM and Chameleon Records are due in the beginning of 2013.

“…We waited to come out with "our" sound. A track needs to tell it's own story and that may take some time. Besides that, we also need to understand what we're doing musically.”.

Performance-wise; KDGH will not always give you the casual DJ performance. They also try to expand the visual and sonic experience by jamming along with tracks with drum-computers and external effects.

"…You can really interact with the audience. A little snare roll here and a white noise groove there. Whatever supports the track that's played and brings the dance floor to life…".

    07. MHM One & Atoi - Once Upon A Time (Martin Dawson Remix) [WetYourSelf! Recordings | WYS017]

Denmark born MHM One teams up with local band Atoi to deliver the seventeenth release for prolific house and techno label and party WetYourSelf!, in the form of the ‘Once Upon A Time’ two track EP. His ultra creative deep house and techno cuts are already well known after releases on the likes of Tartelet, Fantastic Friends and Fake Diamond, as well as longstanding residencies at Copenhagen’s Culture Box and Zur Wilden Renate, Berlin.

Original track ‘Once Upon A Time’ sees MHM One explore his playful side, without losing sight of his inherent musicality and artistic instinct. Bongos, a dub-tinged bassline and breathy gasps set the scene for the slow burning house track where melody takes a humble back seat. A striking spoken word vocal steals the limelight until a mystical woodwind ensemble springs up to welcome a greater focus on minor organ chords and lively flutters and trills.

The late Martin Dawson has twisted MHM One’s unusual track parts into an instantly more driving remix, where the subtle bass notes take on a more relentless quality, melodic riffs are brought straight to the fore and the percussion takes on a more traditional dance floor focus. Interestingly, the remix only makes use of the sounds of the original, albeit heavily manipulated. Staying true to Dawson’s great legacy, he at no point loses the playful essence of MHM One’s original work.
