01. Vaal - Mask (Sei A Remix) [Baastard | BSTRD003]
MASK | Released in 2012 as the first track to come from the mysterious ‘Vaal’, ‘Mask’ has been remixed by two purveyors of forward-thinking electronic music. Sei A and John Tejada twist & cajole the original into new and darker territories, whilst Vaal’s own ‘Hut Remix’ adds another dimension to the EP.
VAAL | Heralding from a rock n’roll and jazz background Vaal is not aware of the strict rules that define & guard electronic music. Therefore Vaal is not afraid to break them. Sourcing tracks and samples became an obsession: from this was born a compulsion to write, experiment & develop original music that could be equally human, equally electronic.
Vaal exists in the dark of the city: the secretive curtained room that you can never quite peer into, the dark pulsating dance-floors of the underground. Vaal has nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears & sweat. Vaal is electronic, & Vaal is a Baastard.

06. Pedro Aguiar - I Don't Want It (Ray Unico Remix) [Flow Vinyl | FV048]
King Unique returns - with a new identity and a new sound .. meet ray
Flow Vinyl stay close to home for their second release of 2013. Lisbon-based DJ and producer Pedro Aguiar is at the controls with ‘I Don’t Want It’, a sweetly melancholic track severed up with an extra helping of deep funk. He’s already made a strong name for himself with releases on labels like Baroque, Plastic City and Wolf Music (part of the Flow family.) Now it’s the turn of Flow Vinyl and something a little different showing the forward-thinking attitude of the label.
Pedro Aguiar is known for his wide range of musical styles, and ‘I Don’t Want It’ reflects the more song-based side of his sound. An irresistible rhythm, rolling bass-line and catchy guitar sample provide the perfect backdrop for the emotional vocals. Always with one eye on the dance-floor, the track uses extra layers of percussion to build the pressure to superb effect.
The remix package is rather special too as King Unique assumes his new Ray Unico alias and pushes the funk even further. Dreamier than the original and with a nod towards disco, it’s an enchanting contribution from one of the best producers on the progressive house scene.
In contrast, Beaumont Stanford from Los Angeles gets the adrenalin pumping with an electro-style reworking fuelled by some killer acid lines. This one is surely destined for some big room action this summer. A very cool and varied collection of music perfectly executed.

08. Bachar Mar-Khalifé - Machins Choses (feat. Kid A) (Ewan Pearson Remix) [InFiné Music | Promo]
First single taken from Lebanon born, Paris based Bachar Mar-Khalifé's new album "Who's Gonna Get The Ball..." to be released on InFiné on the 4th of March. Original song by Serge Gainsbourg.
Kiddiminster born, Berlin based Ewan Pearson has been making records since 1995. He has recorded as Maas for Soma, releasing six singles and an album, ʻLatitudeʼ, and under a number of other guises including World of Apples and, currently, Partial Arts for Cologne’s legendary Kompakt label. His remixes for the likes of Depeche Mode, Chemical Brothers, Seelenluft, Cortney Tidwell, Foals and Junior Boys are considered classics of the form and have been compiled on ‘Small Change’ (Soma, 2001) and 2007’s !K7 2CD retrospective ‘Piece Work’. His production credits include Delphic’s ‘Acolyte’, Tracey Thorn’s solo albums ‘Out Of The Woods’ and ‘Love And Its Opposite’, The Rapture’s ‘Pieces of the People We Love’ and M83’s ‘Saturdays=Youth’.
A published academic and lecturer at the tender age of 27 (‘Discographies: dance music, culture and the politics of sound’ (Routledge, 1999) with Jeremy Gilbert), Ewan is a frequent speaker at festivals and conferences around Europe, he writes a column for Germany’s ‘Groove’ magazine and his ‘Enthusiasm’ blogs send readers hot-footed to record stores in their droves. As a DJ Ewan’s no slouch either. He has been responsible for three acclaimed mix CDs – SciFiHiFi Vol.1 for Soma, fabric 35 and last year’s ‘We Are Proud Of Our Choices’ for Kompakt. A regular at clubs from We Love Space to Panoramabar and a resident at Robert Johnson and The Loft, his sets – like the rest of his career – defy easy categorisation, marrying the independent and the underground with a pop sensibility that’s all his own.
In the last twelve months Ewan has returned to remixing with a vengeance, completing work for Chapel Club, Crosstown Rebels, Visionquest, Eskimo, Erol Alkan & Boyz Noize and Metronomy. The first track from a new project ‘Bhutan Tiger Rescue’ (with Julian ‘October’ Smith) was featured on the new Kompakt Pop Ambient 2011 compilation. He has produced and mixed most of Flowers and Sea Creatures’ debut album for Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly, a single for Oxford’s Trophy Wife and is currently working on Footprintz’ debut album for Visionquest.
09. Mathew Jonson - In The Stars (Automaton EP) [Crosstown Rebels | CRM110]
Honorary Rebel Mathew Jonson will soon be unleashing his long awaited third artist album on Crosstown Rebels but first a slice of the Canadian minimal house pioneer's inimitable style with two tracks of distinct tonal contrast both with the unique stamp of a Jonson production.
Killer A-side 'Automaton' is a powerful trip with a solid yet nuanced drive, intricate tribal beats with an almost syncopated African influence combined with gnarled bass sequences in a never-ending groove.
B-side 'In The Stars' enters a more abstract realm, with celestial synth melodies melting into a sound bed of futuristic bleeps and a soporific groove of percussion and a heavy bass beat. In the breaks, vague jazzy chords fuse with an echoing voice descending from space.
The Mathew Jonson sound is instantly recognizable. Rhythmically complex and with a truly timeless fluid style, Jonson has a propensity for epic, dark and dynamic sound scapes that leave a dancefloor helplessly enthralled. Canadian born but residing in Berlin for the past decade, Jonson is widely considered a figurehead in the minimal house and techno surge of the early 2000s. Also part of the ground-breaking live techno project Cobblestone Jazz, Jonson is part-founder of the illustrious Wagon Repair imprint as well as his own Itiswhatisis Recordings and has appeared on heavyweight labels such as M_nus and Perlon. 'Automaton', Jonson's second release on Crosstown Rebels after the runaway success of 'Dayz' in 2012, is a precursor to the hotly anticipated forthcoming album 'Her Blurry Pictures' -- due on the label in June 2013.
